Song Of The Week #3

,

Hej Hej, pop pickers bigsmile - welcome back....
SJD : Down a hole (SJD remix)

Well - this is from another fine NZ band...well, artist really - SJD (aka Sean James Donnelly) - from the album 'Southern Lights (Pic 'n Mix edition)'. The thing about this album is that while it's full of beautiful songs and fantastic music, SJD's sound is, in my opinion, an acquired taste. Don't get me wrong - this is a cool album - but if you're gonna get it, I advise the Pic 'n Mix edition, because it has the advantage of 7 remixes and 4 official band promotional video MPGs on disc 2, which add enormously to one's understanding of what SJD are about. The featured song is kinda the rock exception in this album, really - but I think is an excellent example of the way that SJD's music is full of space, and dense yet spare background sounds...in fact 'space' (as in room to move, breathe, think) is the essence of Sean's music, really. I don't expect that the band are well known (if known at all) outside NZ and probably Australia, which is a shame because, like the excellent Danish bands that I'll soon start featuring here, they have *huge* potential, and are kinda like sonic beacons, lighthouses occasionally flashing signals of hope from the otherwise dull, boring, unimaginative shores of music's entropy island, which is home to so many bands, current and past. smile So - much, much more SJD to listen to here, at Amplifier.co.nz - and I highly recommend you watch the 'Beautiful Haze' video there - a delicious little song which deserves lots of international success, and I'm afraid (but not surprised) to say that as I write, SJD don't feature on Amazon.com. So if you're interested, you can certainly buy most of the band's material as either CD or downloadable MP3 from Amlifier.co.nz, as linked above - alternatively if it's just hard CDs (new and especially 2nd hand) you want, go to NZ's very own Real Groovy on-line music store (they ship internationally too up). I use both these places all the time, and I can confirm they're secure and reliable smile Oh yeah - this album gets 5/10 on the musicometer bigsmile

OK - I'll leave you with a rather cool little youtube, the title-track from this album, which is perhaps more representative of what of you'll get if you buy it...this really *is* cool :

The original video of this is included on the pic 'n mix edition of this album, b t w. Enjoy bigsmile

smile Thanks. This is the first time that I've been at a computer when reading your posts; I'll have to revisit the earlier ones now.

Jurjenjekav Saturday, November 27, 2010 12:20:26 PM

Nice song! I liked it. I liked the video as well, too bad the quality wasn't that high, but nevertheless pretty awesome!! yes

Spaggyj Saturday, November 27, 2010 5:22:04 PM

Catchy. Not my kind of taste at all, usually but, yeah... Certainly very catchy.

FlaRin Saturday, November 27, 2010 6:36:12 PM

@JJ - the video is, I believe, an old piece of film from the 60s, directed (and\or choreographed) by Bob Fosse. It's cool that the song seems to fit it so well, I must say smile

Incidentally, BF wrote & directed a cool movie called All That Jazz, which isn't about Jazz music, but dance - worth watching if you can hire it out, i m o up

@Kimmie - not quite as catchy as 'Ma nah Ma nah', but getting there lol

Damn. Now I know what I'll be humming for the rest of the day rolleyes

FlaRin Sunday, November 28, 2010 2:53:02 AM

And! The featured song has been reminding me of *something, someone*, but I couldn't remember who & it's been bugging me.

Now I remember : Cheryl Crow smile

They have an album coming up, as far as I know, but I haven't heard how far they are with it. I'll post here when I hear more about it. smile

**If you had a problem playing the link at the top ('Down a hole') - I've fixed it**

Hi again Claudie - always nice to see you back smile

SJD is short for Sean James Donnelly - a New Zealand musician who makes some fantastic music. Check these out:
...I *LOVE* that video!! bigsmile
and...

...as you may be noticing, NZ has some fabulous music that doesn't seem to get that far around the world.....my mission is to expose as much of it as I can smile

KittyliciousZaphira Sunday, February 3, 2013 7:58:07 PM

It's nice when someone fixes things that are broken flirt

FlaRin Sunday, February 3, 2013 8:05:01 PM

Yeah lol if a link here gets broken, I won't know about it unless someone complains - like, I have all the original CDs, so I don't actually play these songs from here once I've posted & checked them on the day of posting (if you see what I mean) smile

Incidentally, isn't that Dapper Dan Pomade in PC Tech Kitty's little tin, there? He sure does look like a Dapper Dan man bigsmile

KittyliciousZaphira Sunday, February 3, 2013 8:19:49 PM

I see what you mean, for sure! wink

Dapper Dan kitteh, that's what he is! lol

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Monday, February 4, 2013 5:01:39 AM

FlaRin Monday, February 4, 2013 5:28:54 AM

This'd do, given the subject of my blogs...

claudieclaudiedkb Tuesday, February 5, 2013 5:51:24 PM

Hi FlaRin !!

Thank you for your superb links smile wink I really like their music bigsmile
As you I think SJD deserves to be much more known !!
But if I can ask you, what do you mean by "my job is to expose as much of it as I can"?? You work to the promotion of artists???

claudieclaudiedkb Tuesday, February 5, 2013 5:56:15 PM

I laughed Zaphira ! This is a very old song ! bigsmile bigsmile

hebergeur d'image

FlaRin Tuesday, February 5, 2013 5:58:38 PM

No - it's a self-imposed mission. I lived in NZ until the end of 2011, and have had music blogs featuring New Zealand (and other) music since 2007 (not always under my current screen-name). The thing is that there's some *brilliant* music produced in NZ and most of it gets very little exposure further afield than Australia. I love it, and am, in my own small way, promoting it by showing it off and providing links to the places you can buy it bigsmile

And Hi! Claudie lol

claudieclaudiedkb Tuesday, February 5, 2013 6:05:01 PM

Ah OK! This is a great initiative !! I'll also share links on my side wink

FlaRin Tuesday, February 5, 2013 6:19:23 PM

Hey - thanks Claudie up I'll point you to some cool stuff bigsmile

claudieclaudiedkb Tuesday, February 5, 2013 6:22:16 PM

With pleasure FlaRin !!!yes yes yes

KittyliciousZaphira Tuesday, February 5, 2013 7:26:58 PM

What a funny dancing cat, Claudie!! yes

claudieclaudiedkb Tuesday, February 5, 2013 7:50:02 PM

It is the dance of the cat! You have to do the same choreography on this song of Crystal Waters and then put the video for us! bigsmile bigsmile bigsmile sing party

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, February 6, 2013 6:12:34 PM

I can actually do that! idea

claudieclaudiedkb Friday, February 8, 2013 7:15:37 AM

I have first sought among the spectators and football players and finally I saw you! Hummm! You were great in your choreography: D

What do you think of mine???
