Mercredi

Need to decipher today's front page, Financial Times. An all-day project.

NYSE Euronext targets US derivatives (bold 24-point type)
African Aid stalls inspite of G8 pledge (one column, right hand top/fold)

Headline, bottom of fold:

DoJ to question Total chief over deals in Iran and Iraq
(by-lines, "Brooke Masters in London and Delphine Strauss in Paris")
My thoughts: Maybe Brooke and Delphine should get together for lunch over this,
perhaps inviting Mia Kirshner and Sarah Shahi to join them.

Giant Front-page photo, "Speaker in Syria - Bush Critizes Pelosi Visit"
By the way, one must question Speaker Pelosi's choice of attire: Pale seafoam pants
suit with Apricot patterned scarf. This would be appropriate for a matinee at the
Coconut Grove Playhouse or anywhere in greater Coral Gables, but not for a meeting
with Syria's Foreign Minister, Walid al-Moualem. The photo caption
notes that "Mrs" Pelosi will meet with Syrian Prime Minister Bashar al-Assad today,
that she is the most senior US official to visit Damascus in two years. (Photo
credit to Reuters.)

Fact check: does that mean that Secretary of State Rice hasn't been to Damascus
or that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is senior to Secretary of State Rice.

Observation: Mrs Pelosi's appearance on the world stage indicates (to me) that the
thought, inkling or possibility of her one day running for President has occurred to
her. So, she probably likes the thought that this year, a 72-year old man,
McCain, is running for President. Mrs. Pelosi was born in 1943, so she is...
no, her DOB is 26 March 1940, so she is already 67 years old. So nevermind the presidential
idea. However, on the other hand, if George and Dick were moved away from the
scene, then perhaps she would be still become the first female US President afterall
(leapfrogging over Hillary Clinton). Well, who knows. I do think that "appropriate
for court" attire (that would be dark blue or black), is more appropriate for
the occasion.

Remember when Muriel Siebert was required to wear hat and gloves to work? Well,
I read about it.

Inside today's Financial Times, there is one story I can readily understand (whenever I get around to reading it: "Washington's Gang of Three helps keep administration on course," by Edward Luce reporting from Washington. The three are Defense Secretary Bob Gates, Secretary of State Condoleeza Wheat and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson. They each get 2" x 1" photos.
