I unfortunately missed the entire Autumn blogging season due to a move to a new house. But feel free to visit my
Autumn (APN) and
Late Autumn photo albums.

white-tailed deer, fawn
Yesterday evening I was driving to the old house to plant flowers. When almost there, two female white-tailed deer stood quietly close to the road. They didn’t run away which I thought was a bit odd. I then saw movement in the grass, a tiny newborn fawn!! I slowed to a stop. The fawn was so young that it had trouble standing without wobbling. It then started walking towards the car!! As it approached it made the sweetest nasal grunting noises. I quickly grabbed my camera and took these photos.
Approaching the car.
It's legs were very wobbly.
A little nervous.
Turning away from the road and back into the field.
In the rear view mirror I watched the mother cross the road and stop to tend to the fawn. It was a beautiful encounter on a warm June evening

chipmunk, ferns, wildflowers, hummingbirds
Nature is exploding with new life and I can’t keep up! The second half of May brought hummingbirds, baby chipmunks and squirrels, and a lush green forest melodic with countless bird songs.

Wildflowers dot the forest floor. Early white trilliums fade to pink.
Violets curl in the wind.
Columbines flower in time for arriving hummingbirds.
Wild phlox.

And delicate arrangements.

Purple lilacs grow wild at the entrance to our woods path.
Last post's tiny ferns uncurled into 1-2 foot high plants! I was covered in mosquitoes while taking these photos in a swampy area.

A carpet of dandelions.
Dandelion closeup.
And silhouette.
Hummingbirds arrived on May 13th, the same day that I put up the feeder.
Chipmunks scurry about. I watched 5 babies emerge from their den on May 30.
Mylo and I continue on our daily walks.
With each walk finishing up with a big slurp and dip in the creek

vinca, trilliums, hail, ferns
...
Spring has exploded over the past week! I'm scrambling to keep up with the rapid growth as each day brings so many changes. The trees are filling out with fresh green leaves ..

The forest floor is carpeted with lush greenery like these bloodroot leaves.
And dotted with our provincial flower, the trillium. The first to bloom was this rare red trillium.
Vinca (periwinkle) ground cover …

This little clump of bloodroot flowers provided some pretty pictures.
I posted 4 of these cheery skyward views
here
Ferns are uncurling …
And caterpillar tents abound
And finally, even though I promised no more ice photos, a severe hail storm pelted us with inch thick hailstones on May 8th
I managed to take 22 photos this week, all of which can be viewed
here.

chipmunk, Spring, wildflowers, wild garlic
At long last Spring has arrived!

After 4 months of winter the woods have exploded with new growth. At first I struggled with the season change as winter photos are usually best taken in bright sunshine whereas vegetation seems best captured on rainy days, but I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.
In between renovation projects I have been snapping photos and have finally had time to create my
Spring 2009 album.
In mid-April wild garlic quickly carpeted the forest floor.
A strong aroma of garlic is present, especially up close.
Dutchman's Breeches foliage nestled against a warm stone.
Large lilac buds.
The first wildflowers, Round-lobed Hepatica poking up through the leaves.

A bashful looking Bloodroot flower

Spring Beauty nestled close to a tree.
Funky reflections of new grass.
Chipmunks up from their winter hibernation.

And finally, Mylo, after 4 months of eating snow is back to eating grass
