April streams and "shrink wrapped" ice

Since my last post I have been busy with the house renovations. The old fiberglass attic insulation was replaced with blown cellulose and new ceilings installed. Tomorrow an energy audit will be done to assess how leaky the house is before the outside walls are reinsulated. This will hopefully result in a rebate of more than $1000. You are welcome to follow the progress in the renovations album.

Spring is slowly getting underway. Early April highlights include gushing streams and vernal ponds. Nighttime temperatures continue to dip below zero covering morning ponds with a thin layer of ice.

These leaves look like they're covered in shrink wrap ...

which quickly melts in the morning sun.

The Spring Melt: Water & Ice

, ,

Late March - the nights are still cold -5C to -10C and the days from 0C to +10C. The snow melts during the day and the water freezes overnight. There is a small ravine beside the house that collects the melted snow creating a shallow stream. It looked interesting so I pulled on my rubber boots and took a series of close-ups of the surface. I was amazed at the interesting and exotic results of the mixture of water and ice. There were too many for one post so I created an album for the full set here.

Leaves and water below a thin layer of curvy ice.

Blades of grass fluttering in the water flowing below the ice.

A red autumn leaf.

Water bubbles hitting the surface of the ice.

A hole.

Interesting cracks.

And finally, this looked more like a prehistoric fossil than an ice formation!

A glassy frozen marsh

,

Spring is here! The temperature is above zero, the raccoons and chipmunks are up, robins are back and the snow has started to melt creating mud and puddles. But before moving on to more springlike photos, I have a few that I took of a frozen marsh on Feb. 16th. You can view the full set of 10 in the Glassy Frozen Marsh album but here is a sampling ...

The grasses are clearly visible below the ice.

Icy visions after the thaw

Last week’s thaw and refreeze resulted in some beautiful glassy ice! This low lying drainage ditch had filled with water during the thaw. The surface then froze and the water below subsided leaving a thin layer of ice on top, and lucky for me a beautiful backdrop for the images in this post

A delicate 2’ x 1’ slab of ice is supported by a small tree stump

The branches of the red brush (top right corner of the first image) surrounded by ice.

After much crawling around on the ground I accidentally touched the delicate surface causing a chunk of ice to drop. So I snapped this and called it a day

Before the February thaw

Mid-February = Mid-winter = Big Messy Thaw! 24 hours of steady rain has transformed January's clean snowy landscape into a slushy brown mess p: Thankfully I have a few remaining cleaner images to share from over the past 2 weeks

A stop at the maple sugar shack in the woods captures the snowy reflection in its window.

And finally, Mylo relaxing in the middle of the road after removing more ice balls from his toes!!
