A beautiful encounter with a newborn fawn

,

Yesterday evening I was driving to the old house to plant flowers. When almost there, two female white-tailed deer stood quietly close to the road. They didn’t run away which I thought was a bit odd. I then saw movement in the grass, a tiny newborn fawn!! I slowed to a stop. The fawn was so young that it had trouble standing without wobbling. It then started walking towards the car!! As it approached it made the sweetest nasal grunting noises. I quickly grabbed my camera and took these photos.

Approaching the car.

It's legs were very wobbly.

A little nervous.

Turning away from the road and back into the field.

In the rear view mirror I watched the mother cross the road and stop to tend to the fawn. It was a beautiful encounter on a warm June evening

What a lovely piece of luck, if luck it was! You must be on very good terms with your genii loci, for them to have given you such a treat.

And yes, I believe in that sort of thing.

Hello there derWandersmann! Long time no see. It was an incredible experience!! My first close-up encounter with a fawn. It sure was luck with timing. Any later and the fawn would have been more mobile and away from that spot. I'd love to know how old it was. It was VERY wobbly!

What a beautiful encounter indeed! A day or two old it may have been. Just guessing here. I was at the state fair once and watched a baby calf being born. Within minutes it was helped up by two workers to begin nursing. Not sure why the workers did that but maybe it takes a couple of hours for it to get up on its own, when it gets hungry.

Well, it was an hour or two old, max ... the fawn's coat looks groomed and dry, but if he was still wobbly, it couldn't have been much older than that.

Wonderful sight to behold

Oh lovely. And great photos of a chance encounter

How fortunate for you. That is what you call serendipity. Doesn't happen very often, but leaves lasting impression.

studio41 10. June 2009, 08:42

very sweet indeed!

ForestFloor 10. June 2009, 14:05

Pam, how wonderful to watch the calf being born  Did it make any noises? This fawn made the funniest nasally grunts as it approaced the car

ForestFloor 10. June 2009, 14:07

derWandersmann, I think you're right that it was only hours old. It would get up, wobble a bit, walk a bit, then fall down again. You'd think that after a few days it would be more mobile.

Andy, it was a wonderful sight, my first close-up experience with a fawn. It was only about 6 feet away from the car here

Neil, these chance encounters don't happen very often. And that night I had been delayed by a rare evening phone call and then grabbed my camera at the last minute!

ForestFloor 10. June 2009, 14:15

Linda, the image of this little fawn approaching through the long grass will definitely leave a lasting impression. It's so rare to stumble upon a wild animal as young as this. The setting was so peaceful too, with the mother and another doe closeby. I'm so glad I grabbed my camera before leaving! :D

Jill,

I'm still not sure it was chance.

But I'm a card-carrying member of the Lunatic Fringe.

What an amazing treat! Such a beautiful creature!

SittingFox 11. June 2009, 21:23

How wonderful! I've never seen one that young. Such a delicate little thing, just starting to explore its world!

(And after two years I can actually look at fawn photos without thinking of certain events in Tahsis! )

 I've missed a good share of photo ops myself, sorry to say... glad this happened for you. here's one example, my daughter was in a window at a coffeeshop the other day, wearing her zebra/mime shirt-- I put cam down after snapping many photos, then a bus painted as a tiger filled the window (the perfect background) as it rushed by... there, Christine, thank you, now I can let it go lol. my teenager was there for me to lament with.

What a lucky, special encounter! And you had your camera with you. How lucky for us!

Tabmartel 12. November 2009, 02:01

Definately not more than two hours old..

You got to witness the first moments of that animals life, it really doesn't get any cooler than that!

Glad you had a camera on you.
