Weak and Powerless

One thing to do to help our planet.

, , , , ,

Most of the detergents we use are made of chemichals. Petrochemicals, to be precise. They were invented when oil produced by animal fats and plants was scarce to produce soaps. Basically, for what I understand, what they do is they soften the water, that is, in more technical terms, decrease its surface tension, so what we get is a wetter water p this way, oily stuff (like dirt and... err... oil) get mixed easier with the water and so, removed.

But the petro-components of detergents and modern soaps normally produce foam, and when it reaches rivers and streams, that creates a block to oxigen exchange and also to light. Moreover, some components work as nutrients to the algae and other underwater plants, raising the population to the point where there is no more oxigen left in the water, and so plants and animals die. Some bleach products and other kool stuff that makes your clothes look just as new after 10 million washes, are completely and utterly slowly-biodegradable. Other contain enzymes, which are a bit better (at least they are organic), but still some people is allergic to them.

What I try to do is:
  • Use less detergents: Bussiness people always put tv ads suggesting to use more than what you need.
  • Look for biodegradable detergents and soaps: But be sure to check it. Some evil people advertise a product as bio, when it is not.
  • Remember the "old granma tips"?. Try them. Some are not efficient, but most of them are, and more importantly, they normally use, mostly, organic products!. I have heard of the cleaning properties of lemmon to clean metallic surfaces...

Bye Bye LoveTwo things to do to help our planet.

On a side note:
In theory you should not throw oil of any kind in the water. Like the one you use to fry potatoes. You should take it to a disposal of some kind. That because a little drop of oil covers a very large surface of water. This is expecially important for dirty oil from cars and other machines.
