News Agency UN (Universidad Nacional) - Bogota - The scientist Rodolfo Llinás Riascos, now visiting Colombia, invited the academic community to play a more active role in the society.

"Al grupo de académicos hay que decirles que peleen para que cambien. Los únicos que pueden forzar son ustedes. Es el momento de la revolución. No se puede seguir así", dijo.

"To the group of academics we must tell them they have to fight for a change. The only ones that can force, are you. This is the time for revolution. We can't keep like this" - he said.

Llinás, considerado en su momento por el periódico The New York Times como uno de los neurólogos más importantes del mundo, así como uno de los colombianos universales al igual que Gabriel García Márquez y Fernando Botero, envió un mensaje para mejorar el estatus de los profesores en la Universidad.

"A los maestros, primero hay que reconocerlos; segundo, hay que darles el respeto que se merecen; tercero, hay que pagarles mejor y cuarto, hay que darles mejor posibilidad de expresar su propia inteligencia", afirmó.

"The teachers, first have to be recognized; second, give them the respect they need; third, give them better wages and fourth, give them better ways to show their own intelligence", he said.

El científico Llinás se refirió con orgullo a su paso por la Universidad Nacional de Colombia, a finales de los cincuenta y comienzo de los sesenta.

The scientist Llinás talked prowdly of his years at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, in the late 50's and early 60's.

"Fantástico. Yo tuve dos Alma Máter. Yo hice Javeriana y Nacional. En la Nacional aprendí matemáticas con Carlo Federici. También aprendí fisiología. Me ayudaron a ser más profundo en los conocimientos. Entonces, ambas universidades son para mí bastante especiales", aseguró Llinás.

"Fantastic. I had two Alma Mater. [Pontificia Universidad] Javeriana and [Universidad] Nacional. In the Nacional I learnt mathematics with Carlo Federici. I also learnt physiology. They helped me to be more deep with thoughts. Then, both universities are very special to me", claimed Llinás.

El científico colombiano tuvo como director de su tesis de pregrado al matemático italiano Federici, quien fue uno de los fundadores de la Facultad de Matemáticas de la UN. Más adelante, en la Universidad, Federici formó para él (Llinás) un cursillo de lógica y así comenzaron a trabajar en redes neuronales, según las ideas de McCullogh. Así lo reseña la página Web del Grupo Federici.

The colombian scientist had as counselor of his college thesis the italian mathematician Federici, who was one of the founders of the Mathematics Faculty of the UN. After that, in the university, Federici forged for him (Llinás) a logic course, and so, they started to work in neural networks, according to the ideas of McCullogh. yikes Carlo Federici was my math teacher when I was in 1st year of elementary school!!! He scared me like hell!!! but I never knew he was such an important person!!

Back on topic, it is obvious how relevant this is... This country does not need to end with the guerrillas like if they were vermins... well... maybe they are, but so is the goverment, and the militia, so no... adding war to the war is not the way to go. That's the easy, and improper way. We need education, and that's something we do not understand.

The next step in human evolution?

Well... no, it is already quite difficult to determine what a 'step' is, so this is not the next step in the human evolution, but it is actually an idea I gathered from reading different sources... so basically is just focused in this analogy I am building up right now...


If a single-celullar being took millions of years to learn that grouping armoniously with other single-celled organisms was both a huge advantage and a high risk, but that has been worth it; how much time will take us, humans as 'individuals', to realize that competition is counter-productive, and that the next step in our own evolution is to bind ourselves as one being, as our cells did millions of years ago?

Of course, we can work in group, and as a team too, but to be honest, we are behaving more like rats, than like a cohesive group or team: at the first sign of trouble, the rats leave the ship abandoned to ill fortune. A cell cannot do that... to be part of a multi-cellular entity, means that the cell has to have ultimate commitment: If the cell next to me dies, I die as well...............; but we, as humans, just wander around like single-cellular automata, learnt, by force, that competition is the way to go, that the one that has more money/love/friends/success/internal knowledge of itself/whatever adjective or sustantive you want to put here, is the best

Two things to do to help our planet.

Do you like coffee? I bet one or two do. Well, did you know that the white paper you use to filter is bleached with chlorine? That process of bleaching creates a lot of pollution and toxic substances for the environment, mainly rivers because dioxins like plankton. Besides, all those filters are used just once, can you imagine the huge quantity of rubbish that is made in just one week in a neighbourghood?

What to do? Try to find ecological filters, the chlorine-free ones. Some are even available in the internet ( http://www.ecofilter.com/ ). If you want to do a better job, buy the old and reliable cotton filters, all washable and reusable.

Also, try not to use much paper to clean stuff in the kitchen. Better use those paper towels that, although not chlorine-free, can be used and reused several times before being disposed. Or better yet, use a piece of old cloth and wash it when needed.

Now. What does all this recycling stuff matter if we just can't get rid of all the cans, bottles and e-waste? Use the phone and Internet!. Get informed about how your city or country implements recycling programs and consumer centres. Here the Environment Ministry is promoting a campaign with all mobile phones providers to recycle old devices.

Remember that information is power.

I just can't believe my ears. Is this the country that rules the world?

I feel like being at school, running from bullies who are so stupid to think they can do anything with brute force only.

I know not everyone is like the people here, but it seems that only the 10% of north americans are educated enough to face the world with dignity, the rest seem to thought they are educated, but... well... democracy is the open willingness to let others think for us.

Being Busy

Why is it good to be busy? After all, the end of the day it's all about being tired, the body asks for a rest when the night is coming. Is all that effort worthless? Besides, if some cash gets in for that, it will never, NEVER, be as much as its deserved.

The time is becoming shorter every day. There's a lot of stuff to do yet, but there's no time, and then thinking about it it's critical. Planning, budgets, thinking ahead, aiming. And the best: all that consumes time, like draining a battery cell to improve how it drains! All that is being busy.

But the price to play it's high. There's no rest in doing what is needed. The mind gets cloudy, and lonely; but still new questions arise, new answers to find, so, at the end, it's always a hurry, a mess, a blurry stuff. Ideas stay for short time, but they want more and more attention because society push us to know everything about everything and yet teach us less and less.

Now, let's be fair. Being busy is not too bad, at least at some degree. How can someone be depressed, sad or angry when there's so much left to do? No relationship can stand a fight against one or both being busy all the time, and so a mate is better a bit far, so each can have its own space, air, music and play. Such experience can be rewarding, sentimentally speaking.

So what is left for us? An amazing way to stay ahead, but at a high price: loneliness and weirdness are just around the corner, and if the mind and body are not ready to recieve them, it could be a terrible experience.

Es mi deber como ciudadano bogotano ayudar a promocionar los puntos que creo favorecen a mi ciudad y a la realidad política y económica de Colombia. Para esto hago transcripción de una carta escrita por el Alcalde a la Presidencia, en un esfuerzo por informar mejor a aquellas personas que leen estos espacios.






Respetado señor Presidente: Como es de su conocimiento, desde el 2 de septiembre de 2004 Bogotá le propuso al Gobierno Nacional participar en la construcción de la estrategia nacional de negociación del TLC y ser parte del equipo negociador, con el ánimo de contribuir al éxito del proceso y a la defensa de los intereses regionales. Lamentablemente el Gobierno Nacional no aceptó nuestra oferta y hemos asistido sólo como observadores a las distintas rondas. El 23 de noviembre de ese año entregamos a los negociadores nacionales nuestras propuestas de defensa básica del interés regional en cada uno de los temas y nuestras aspiraciones de acceso real al mercado estadounidense. Por desgracia, nunca obtuvimos respuesta del Gobierno Nacional. Cumplidas 13 rondas y luego de que Perú protocolizó un cierre formal de las negociaciones con Estados Unidos, el país ha sido notificado por el Ministro de Comercio, Industria y Turismo, Jorge Humberto Botero, de que se intentará concluir el proceso a partir del próximo 23 de enero en Washington. Sin lugar a dudas, el cierre inmediato de las negociaciones sólo será posible sobre la base de aceptar, en el caso colombiano, un TLC muy similar al suscrito por Perú. Con todo respeto, señor Presidente, me permito manifestarle que de aceptarse un TLC igual al suscrito por Perú se desatenderían los intereses básicos presentados por Bogotá en noviembre de 2004, se pondrían en grave riesgo importantes sectores productivos nacionales y serían muy escasas las oportunidades de creación de nuevos empleos productivos para los colombianos. En particular, señor Presidente, quiero llamar la atención sobre los siguientes aspectos neurálgicos: 1. Si se acepta, como en el caso del Perú, liberar todas las importaciones agrícolas -altamente subsidiadas en Estados Unidos-, desmontar el Sistema Andino de Franjas de Precios y no se sustituye éste para los bienes sensibles por una Salvaguardia Especial Agropecuaria de carácter permanente, en pocos años habrá quebrado buena parte del sector agropecuario. No es posible sustituir la protección arancelaria con subsidios agrícolas porque sería competir con el Tesoro de Estados Unidos. Al contrario, el TLC traerá una reducción importante de los ingresos tributarios de la nación de más de 300 millones de dólares anuales. En esas condiciones se sometería a mayor riesgo la seguridad alimentaria de los bogotanos, se incrementarían las migraciones a Bogotá y se harían aún más difíciles las condiciones para la ocupación pacífica y productiva del campo. 2. En el mismo sentido, permitir que al mercado nacional entren los trozos de pollo que son considerados en Estados Unidos como desechos, sería condenar a la ruina a la industria avícola. 30 por ciento de los 250 mil empleos que genera esa industria están localizados en Bogotá y la región aledaña. 3. Mientras tanto, Estados Unidos no adopta compromisos efectivos para facilitar el acceso a su mercado mediante la aceptación de convalidación de normas sanitarias y fitosanitarias. 4. Aumentar la protección al monopolio de las industrias farmacéuticas innovadoras, más allá de los compromisos adquiridos por Colombia en la OMC, conducirá a una elevación de los precios de los medicamentos. Por ejemplo aceptar, como lo hizo Perú, extender las patentes por demoras injustificadas en el otorgamiento de la licencia le costará a los usuarios bogotanos un sobreprecio de 46 millones de dólares en el año 2030; condicionar el registro sanitario a la existencia o no de la patente, 62 millones de dólares en el mismo año; y un monto igual conceder la protección de los datos de prueba. Esto significaría la negación del acceso a la salud a miles de bogotanos o la reducción de la inversión social en otras áreas prioritarias del Distrito Capital. 5. En el sector de los servicios, que cubre el 69 por ciento del PIB de Bogotá, nuestras expectativas de aprovechar el TLC para exportar servicios empresariales y profesionales se verían restringidas por no pactar visas temporales para empresarios, profesionales y trabajadores, y por carencia de homologación de títulos profesionales, entre otras restricciones no desmontadas por Estados Unidos. Conozco, señor Presidente, la importancia de establecer un tratado comercial sólido y estable con Estados Unidos, nuestro principal socio comercial. No estamos contra los tratados, queremos ser bien tratados. En atención a lo expuesto y a los estudios que Bogotá ha presentado al Gobierno Nacional sobre las negociaciones del TLC, en mi condición de ciudadano y de Alcalde Mayor de Bogotá respetuosamente le solicito, señor Presidente, postergar la firma del Tratado hasta tanto no existan garantías plenas para Colombia y, en especial, para los derechos y el bienestar de los bogotanos y bogotanas. El país requiere un TLC sustancialmente distinto al firmado por Perú. La estructura productiva, así como las condiciones sociales y políticas de Colombia son muy diferentes de las de esa nación hermana. En subsidio de lo anterior, reitero la propuesta presentada en marzo del año pasado por Bogotá de que Colombia solicite a Estados Unidos la renovación de las preferencias arancelarias ATPDEA. Esas preferencias consagran el interés estratégico de Estados Unidos de cooperar con Colombia en la lucha contra el narcotráfico y compensan, en parte, el costo nacional en la infatigable tarea común de combate al narcotráfico. Estoy seguro que el Gobierno y el Congreso de Estados Unidos comprenderán las razones así expresadas por Colombia. La terminación del ATPDEA, en diciembre de este año, no puede convertirse en una espada de Damocles para condicionar la firma del TLC. En cualquier caso, es más factible renovar el ATPDEA que aprobar el TLC, dados los antecedentes de la aprobación del TLC firmado con Centroamérica y República Dominicana. Sólo si es renovado el ATPDEA las negociaciones del TLC podrán transcurrir hasta que las dos naciones encontremos un equilibrio que beneficie mutuamente a nuestros pueblos. Cajeros, cajeros

Es increíble ver lo que pasa... hoy me llegó un correo originado por mi papá, quien se encontró con la siguiente joyita:




Este es un mensaje de alerta sobre irregularidades en cajeros electronicos. Hoy 30 de noviembre de 2005 al intentar una transaccion en un cajero de Colmena de villa del prado encontre esta “cubierta” sobre la ranura normal del cajero, la cual impide que la tarjeta sea devuelta. Debajo de la misma existia un letrero aparentemente con logo de colmena con “Instrucciones” en caso de que la tarjeta no sea devuelta, de marcar tres veces el numero de la clave y de que si aun no es devuelta, la misma seria regresada en 24 horas a su oficina. Me parecio sospechosa la situacion y removi la cubierta, la cual estaba adherida con cinta de doble superfice pegante, la cual salio facilmente, mi tarjeta estaba ahí. Tambien removi el “instructivo” y acudi a una oficina Colmena para reportar el caso. Ello lo enviaron al departamento de saguridad. Adjunto fotos. Ojo a situaciones irregulares , sobre todo en epocas de primas navidenas, no sea que otros sean los que las disfruten. Saludos Guillermo Rodriguez






















Es increíble cómo parecería que a la gente le encanta robar. ¿Estamos acaso viviendo en alguna sociedad cleptómana? =P Me gustaría quejarme del presidente, como es mi habito, pero no quiero parecer repetitivo. Sin embargo, es horrible ver que estas cosas pasen y de una forma tan descarada. Por favor... la ranura es obviamente hecha con algún intrumento a la fuerza... el papel parece impreso con una HP 630 y el logo sacado de internet. No estoy dando ideas para los próximos ladrones de ser más cuidadosos, sino más bien alertandome para estar más pendiente la próxima vez, incluso si los babosos ladrones mejoran su tecnología.
