Once you've got it, you'll never lose it! It loves to spread under fences, and even under walls. We once had a great stand inside our garage! The only defense is to dig up the shoots and eat them!
When we move to our new place I'd like to have bamboo, and had thought I would just grow it in planters to stop it spreading...but I might try the fiberglass sheeting suggested at this link. Or grow it on an island in the middle of a frog-pond!
WOW, thanks for the link. That is very interesting. We found a large piece of bamboo down the street that had been cut and just left there, so we picked it up and planted it in the yard. Small pieces grew up, then we got a large piece that grew very fast.
