The Dark Furie

Dark Shadows

Furtopian scientists have recently uncovered a prophecy that they believe tells the tale of some dark force returning to threaten the good people of Furtopia. Obviously such superstitious nonsense can't be taken as scientific fact so I've set up a research station to decipher the meaning of these strange omens. I wonder what they could mean?

One Game To Rule Them All

Video games are big business in Japan and Dragon Quest is no different. Well, it's a little different. You see, when a Dragon Quest game is released in Japan it's something close to a national holiday. The games are epic and their reception has always been huge.

Just have a look at these numbers. The second best selling game in Japan last week was Wii Sports Resort with an impressive 103,000 copies sold. The best selling game was the recently released Dragon Quest IX which sold a mammoth 2,319,000 copies. A little under 23 times the amount of copies as the second best seller making it the best selling game debut since, well Dragon Quest VIII actually. And the kicker? Dragon Quest IX was released on Saturday meaning it sold that many in just two days.

Dragon Age

Bioware, famous RPG makers have finally leaked a little more information about their upcoming game, Dragon Age: Origins.

The roleplaying game is a dark heroic fantasy game featuring six playable characters, each with their own origin story that will deeply affect how the story plays out as well as how NPCs and party members react to the character, and has a confirmed 80-100 hours of gameplay per character played with a gameplay style something similar to the Baldur's Gate games, also from Bioware. The developers say that, as the game world is based around the sustained online worlds presented in MMORPGs, it's possible to play it for 800 hours in one playthrough without running out of things to do. So yeah, single player, offline, World of Warcraft coming this year somewhere around my birthday. Expect me to disappear for quite a while.

The newly leaked information is about the Limited Edition release. Just about every game gets a limited edition these days, usually with only different box art to distinguish them from the regular edition, but Dragon Age promises to be something quite special. The limited edition will be released in a tin case with a bonus DVD containing trailers for the game, a "making of" documentary, a collection of concept art, a video of strategy tips and the soundtrack to the game. As well as this bonus DVD, people who buy the limited edition will also get their hands on the following.

  • A cloth world map, which is always an awesomely cool thing to get with an RPG.
  • Three pieces of exclusive in game content - Bergen's Honour, Grimoire of the Frozen Wastes and Final Reason. These three sound like quest or weapon names to me.
  • A new bonus quest called The Stone Prisoner and a new character called Shale. It's unclear if the new character can be played or is an NPC, but listing the bonus quest seperately from the other three pieces of content confirms they're not quests.
  • An unlockable in-game item for Mass Effect 2. Now this is a game seller. There are a load of established Mass Effect fans out there already and this single exclusive item will guarantee that quite a few of them at least try Dragon Age.

Dragon Age: Origins will be released on Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC in October.

Free Gift

Today, The Dark Furie is teaming up with SMBC to give our readers a free gift.

Depressed

,

I've been feeling a bit depressed lately. Want to know the reason? Go on, it'll give you a laugh. I've been feeling depressed because I've been awarded a 600 quid phone. Told you it was funny. How ungrateful must I sound right now eh?

The thing is, as soon as I applied to be an ambassador for the Samsung i8910 HD I posted about it here and when I first found out I'd been accepted as an ambassador I posted about that too. Since then the phone has been released on contract and yet it still hasn't arrived at my door. A little later the phone was released SIM free and yet my phone still hasn't come. Then I got a message telling me the phones should be here soon and and posted about that. Time passed and members here started to buy the phone, yet I'm still phoneless at the moment and I sit here each day, wondering what people are thinking of me because of this. I know that if someone else wrote posts like that and failed to produce any evidence after this long I'd be starting to get suspicious about whether they were just looking for attention. I'm starting to feel that Samsung is making a fool out of me with the constant delays and no further information forthcoming.

Firmware versions for phones are ordered by what country you're in and what network you're on, with certain features taken away or added depending on those factors. However, there are phones that have no country or network code assigned to them, enabling them to have firmware updates as soon as they're available and be used on any network. I believe that ambassadors will be getting those global version phones and that the release version of the firmware for those isn't ready yet, which explains the delay, but I've had no confirmation about it yet so can't be sure.

It's not just me though. All of the ambassadors are being forced to wait for some undisclosed reason. I haven't managed to find many of them, just a few, mostly based in the United Kingdom. Ambassador 1 and Ambassador 2 are both also having to wait. Most of you probably don't believe I'd make things like this up anyway but the links will help set my mind at rest about what people are thinking of me. Sometimes you just have to do these things so you can have peace of mind.

The thing that really annoys me is that Steve Litchfield seems to be one of the other people chosen to be an ambassador too. For those of you who've never heard of Steve, he's one of the main bloggers over at All About Symbian (the big Symbian phone site) and regular contributer to Smartphone & PDA Essentials magazine, well known for not playing favourites and giving fair reviews. Basically he's one of the big names in the mobile industry, one of the few who I'd say knows phones better than I do, and to be classed in the same league as him (even if just by the one person who decided on the winners) is an honour for someone like me, a confirmation that what I'm doing in this blog makes a difference to people. But in this case, it's an accolade that's been cheapened by this whole experience.

As for the way Samsung is playing this, I'll let Steve have the last word about this ridiculous affair.

Across the multiverse, even the Marvel and DC superheroes were feeling burned out.

Beanbags

On the 25th of July 2006, Thomas Rowley waited in the dark with a knife in his hand. As his former girlfriend stepped out the back door of her mother's house he struck. He stabbed 26 year old Shanon Perry six times in the face and chest, nearly killing her.

Perry deteriorated rapidly until she was near death in the emergency room. She was rushed into surgery to remove a blood clot that was pushing against her brain. Dr Margarent Wacker, a neurosurgeon, said that one of the stab wounds penetrated the right side of her skull and entering her brain, slicing into an artery on the way.

Rowley was arrested the following day and has been charged with her attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, stalking, burglary and false imprisonment.

What could drive a man to attack his former lover in that manner? Rowley had felt rejected when Perry dumped him. Having paid for her to have breast implants he started to think she had used him to get them, then tossed him aside. He started to obsess on this matter until one night he decided to get them back (possibly thinking he could sell them as novelty beanbags), saying to his roommate "I'm gonna cut 'em out and get 'em back". Perry claims that she paid half the price for the implants herself.

Anyone here going through a break-up at the moment?
