The Dark Furie

Opera Not So Mini

,

Not long ago I posted that a capable phone used with a TV-out cable may be able to be used as an 80s home computer, with the right software and a bluetooth keyboard. Last night I tried out another theory along the same lines.

Behold the glory of Opera Mini running on my TV. Oh, it's beautiful. So huge. So clear. So perfectly responsive. So why shouldn't it be like that all the time.

Now all I need is a bluetooth keyboard that can act as the direction and softkeys of a phone as well and I'm sorted. Something like this should do...

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Who needs a PC when you've got a phone?

I definitely second that :headbang:
Opera Mini

Spaggyj 16. July 2008, 11:41

that was weird, watching you play snake 3d on the tv :insane:

Furie 16. July 2008, 12:36

It's so cool. I always thought the TV-out socket would only work for the gallery and video player. In future, with a phone like this and a keyboard I'll be well sorted out.

drlaunch 16. July 2008, 12:46

I've tried Opera Mini as a regular web browser on a PC. Websites appear beautifully, just like they were intended to appear on a PC screen. It's just like a regular web browser.

But this is way cooler. Got any larger pics of the action?

rose-marie 16. July 2008, 13:35

Looking good

attilasoul 16. July 2008, 13:38

I can imagine how weird it must have looked with the Snake-game on the TV-screen. But it's cool that it is possible!

qlue 16. July 2008, 13:53

Behold the future.
 .

Furie 16. July 2008, 15:35

I'll add some links to larger images later, so phone users don't get hit by the data charges every visit. At the moment I've got one bar of network and the most unhelpful support staff in the world on the helpline saying it's happening all over.

The one thing that would make this even better is if Opera Mini took up the entire screen. The pictures seem to indicate that there are black regions on either side.

Is this going to be the start of perpetual squabbling between you two for usage of the TV?

H82typ 16. July 2008, 18:00

Mik, you use the keypad at present to navigate and for text entry, correct? I don't see a downside to that unless you want to blog. Or Kim wants to watch tv. :left:
  :D
The black borders on the side wouldn't bother me as long as text from the OM screen didn't bleed into it.

Cois 16. July 2008, 21:07

If its crisp and clear then I don't see any problems.. Especially viewing peoples photo albums and not having to click on the pics and zoom in..
Step up would even to use a smallscreen tv if you're on the go.. (this would probably be just me) and getting more out your phone screen..
Definitly something I wouldn't mind and the bluetooth keyboard would be excellent..
Mobile office no problem eh..
Cool to be a phoner.. <-working title.. :D

I'm still working on a new nickname for phone users. Cellies was too "Pick up the soap" for my liking. :frown:.

I tried turning the application into landscape mode and it just got turned on it's side on the screen. However, I didn't try turning the phone itself into landscape mode (it auto-rotates the screen depending on how you hold it, same tech as the Wii remote) and running the app as normal. I'll add photos here once I try it. Either way the borders don't really bother me.

Results on screen were a lot more clear than I thought they'd be. Not entirely sure how they managed that in fact.

Kim rarely uses the web compared to me, plus she doesn't have a phone with a TV-out socket. By the time I'd start doing this we'd also have the PC set up so she'd be using that.

Yeah Dennis, at present I use the keypad. And the cable is too short to really get any use from using the television as a larger screen. But once I've got a bluetooth keyboard (the official Nokia one pictured above has the phone keys built in) I'll be able to operate the whole thing from across the room, which will kick ass.

Clint, the cable needs the red, yellow and white AV sockets. If the portable has those or a Scart then it'll work.

CP? cell phone

And Auto Rotation Works Beautifully

The future's bright.

Furie 16. July 2008, 22:40

CP? Where's that then?

Dacotah 16. July 2008, 22:53

"I'm still working on a new nickname for phone users. Cellies was too "Pick up the soap" for my liking." So I asked how about CP for cell phone users. Or CPU :D for cell phone users, not central processing unit. :D

H82typ 16. July 2008, 22:59

What's wrong with phonie, at least in print? Spoken it could lead to some... misinterpretation. :left:

Furie 16. July 2008, 23:06

Ah right. I thought someone had typed PC wrong. Nah, gotta be something quick to keep up with you Puties.

I hate it Dennis. It sounds like we're conning people or just not nice ya know. We need something epic to show how great we are.

Dacotah 16. July 2008, 23:18

Well CP or CPU would be alright. Your phone is your CPU. :D

H82typ 16. July 2008, 23:19

Furie 16. July 2008, 23:21

I think I'm going to settle on Lord.

H82typ 16. July 2008, 23:22

 I guess "cellmate" would be out, too. :D

Dacotah 16. July 2008, 23:24

drlaunch 17. July 2008, 00:11

That looks absolutely sweet, Mik. Phones with TV-out have a powerful processor capable outputting a larger image to TV-s. I did read more about it somewhere but I've forgotten most of it.

About the quest for a cellphone user nickname, I have some suggestions: Pocket-puter, The Mob(ile), Gadgeteer, Cell Rebel or Handie to name a few. I must sound silly with these suggestions. :jester:

Cois 17. July 2008, 00:15

Most new portable devices has the 3 jack AV cables I think..
What about portable dvd players with tft screens? Ok I'm thinking in terms of someone travelling alot..
My mini tv combo (tape and radio) set I've customized to use the double av cables.. Don't use it anymore though..

In end if it works with keyboard and everything it'll certainly kick some ass..
Think of as having the functionality of those cheap 100 buck computers they're offering schools..
With combination of Opera mini.. How can we Wappers go wrong.. :left: no that doesn't work..p: Phoners.. It is.. p:

philry4n 17. July 2008, 00:44

That is so coooooooooool

Who needs a wii to browse in your living room? :D

Furie 17. July 2008, 01:34

Only problem is, only the N82, both N95s and the new N78 have both the TV-out capability and the auto rotation to enable full screen viewing. Combine any of those prices (SIM free or total contract price) with the cost of a bluetooth keyboard that works and you may as well buy a cheap PC and a one meg speed connection.

philry4n 17. July 2008, 02:45

i think i saw some chinese phones with tv outs too p:

Cois 17. July 2008, 09:23

With a bit of saving it'll probably be worth it..
Always wanted a upgrade..
Phil.. Put up some links..

jbpseudo 6. September 2008, 06:28

I had missed this Homer: Doh!. Opera Mini is revolutionizing the term portable .
Btw, here is yet another silly suggestion for mobile phone user nick,
Selfonized or rightly Cellphonized :D
