The Dark Furie

Acronyms

,

I mentioned a while ago that I've been trying out some new stuff for my page and I need someone to tell me if the latest thing works.

PC users should be able to pull up an explanation box simply by hovering their mouse over the the words "does this work?" in the middle of the post. Can someone let me know please.

So does this work?

EDIT - Thanks to those who let me know that it works. It's pretty simple code really, designed to let people explain an acronym in an article without interrupting the flow of the article. To do this in your own pages simply use the following code.

<acronym title="Explanation of term">Term to be explained.</acronym>

For example, in this post, this is what I typed.
<acronym title="Yes, but only because Furie's a bloody genius!">does this work?</acronym>

Hope you guys can find some use for it.
bigsmile

Yes, but only because Furie summoned demons and put them in a pen with some animals and some people and filmed it all when things got a little uninhibited and put it up on the Internet ...

... uh ...

... I mean ...

... yes. Yes, it works fine ...

(It also shows the same message in the information bar on the bottom left of the screen on Opera Desktop as well (as opposed to the URL)).

Mizz MartínezMizzMartinez Wednesday, October 1, 2008 9:12:33 PM

YES, IT WORKS! I'm impressed Lord Furie! bigeyes

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, October 1, 2008 9:18:00 PM

If one of you can throw me a screenshot please, I'll edit this to show the code for anyone to use. It's unbelievably simple yet I always forget to check it when I've got PC access. doh

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, October 1, 2008 10:22:52 PM

I got over 3,000 people spending good money to read my page via RSS on their phones who say otherwise. p Remember, just cause a post isn't about a cat doesn't mean it's not a proper post. left

H82typ Wednesday, October 1, 2008 10:35:54 PM

worried I'm sorry Your Highness! What was I thinking!

Mad Scientistqlue Wednesday, October 1, 2008 10:39:02 PM

Blogging about cats is a My Opera tradition. If you don't own a cat you should pretend. Or at least have a woman who thinks she's a cat visit your blog from time to time. whistle

Dark FurieFurie Wednesday, October 1, 2008 11:13:10 PM

That's okay young Dennis. One can't blame the servants for not knowing basic science. king

Christopher DaSilvadannii Thursday, October 2, 2008 2:24:44 AM

scared It works!

Attila attilasoul Thursday, October 2, 2008 4:18:47 AM

Yes, it does work, but it would be smarter if people could actually see that something's happening when you roll the mouse over the word. I mean, I don't roll the mouse over every word or sentence in a post to see if something is hidden. --- Or is it just me?

Or at least have a woman who thinks she's a cat visit your blog from time to time.

Say thank you because apparently it's me who is to blame for your large amount of visitors! p

Darkogdare Thursday, October 2, 2008 4:48:17 AM

It says: Yes it works. But Furie has nothing to do with this p

Do not change my comments mad bomb

pssst Even though I'm so horny for you. flirt

Moesring Thursday, October 2, 2008 6:10:05 AM

Whilst it works, I personally prefer to use the abbr tag. Same usage, but shorter word to spell. p

pssst You can legitimately put a title on (almost) any tag. For example, this link should also display text - and it has the added bonus of being a link. yes

pssst If it would make you happy Tilla, you could use CSS like this to make the browser put a dotted underline (for example) beneath anything that has additional information if you hover over it. yes
*[title] {
border-bottom:1px dotted;
}

Attila attilasoul Thursday, October 2, 2008 6:42:59 AM

You sure know how to make things smarter, Moe! yes

Mad Scientistqlue Thursday, October 2, 2008 7:24:23 AM

Or just make everything you want to highlight bold or italic.

Dark FurieFurie Thursday, October 2, 2008 10:08:30 AM

The standard for acronyms is a light green. I haven't implemented that yet as I wasn't even sure if Opera supported this. I've seen one site that swaps the little box for a speech bubble coming off the highlighted part and I'm considering pilfering that.

As for the size of the code, it doesn't matter. I've got all my commonly used codes in a folder on my phone, waiting to be pasted into posts.

Dark FurieFurie Thursday, October 2, 2008 10:17:51 AM

I've made it bold and dark red to stand out from the post and the links. up
