mobile technology
If you've been reading here for long enough you'll probably have heard my ideas about the perfect smartphone handset - a decently sized touchscreen phone that slots into a bigger PC style base unit. The base unit has a much larger screen, a full keyboard, speakers, a large hard drive for storage and mouse functionality. While all the extra processors for the hardware will be included in the base unit, the phone itself is the brain of the unit, providing an operating system that works well in both forms (although it may take better advantage of the larger screen once connected to the base unit). I think it's such a good idea that I've been talking about it for over a decade now.

Meet Polaris. Filled with wireless sensors, the ability to wirelessly send a signal to a TV and a couple of speakers, this docking station does a bit more than charge your phone or synchronise with a PC. It's that TV signal that's interesting as Polaris beams the entire phones user interface onto your television. Processors within Polaris optimize the phone user interface to the television screen allowing easier access to key features.
And now for the clever bit. This is designed to work on every phone on the network. Unfortunately that network is KDDI in Japan so don't expect to see it over here anytime soon.
