Tips for those new to the My.Opera community

So, you're new to the site and you haven't got a clue what to do. Read on for some tips on how to make your page easier and more fun for you to use. I'll be updating this post regularly so keep checking back.

1) The advanced options allow you to add a Post Intro. When you type anything here, it'll be the only thing people see until they click Read More. Try to make this enticing and informative so that people will want to click Read More.
Personally, I only add a Post Intro to posts that aren't on my first page anymore. It keeps my page nice and neat, and immediately shows off the new additions.

2) You've seen all these photographs and cool effects on other people's pages, but don't know how to do them yourself. First learn some basic BB code. Now set up a sticky post at the top of your blog, containing an example of each type of code line. Make the post private so only you can see it. Voila, you have an easy to use reference bank of codes to check up on.

3) Don't give up if no-one visits you at the beginning. It's a slow start when you're new. Try visiting other people's blogs and leaving comments. The more active you are on the site, the more likely you are to have people reciprocate.

4) A blog is different things to different people. There's no way to do it wrong so don't worry. Personally I use mine as a kind of scrapbook. Others use theirs for social or technological commentary. More people use theirs as a diary or journal. Experiment with your style.

5) If you want to jazz your page up a little, have a look round the web. There's loads of free things you can place on your page. The most popular seem to be fun little personality tests.

6) If you want to display your countdowns, polls, recent visitors, links or friends you'll need to make sure you activate them in the Sidebars and Menus section of My Account.

7) While entering your profile on the About page, you'll see options to enter your messenger and e-mail addresses. If you enter your instant messenger addresses here they'll be available for the whole site to see, so think carefully before you do this. It's just as easy and a lot safer to send your address to someone once you've learned to trust them.

8) Learn how to make friends online properly. It takes a lot more than just adding someone to your Friend's List to become their friend. There are some things you can do to make it more likely that they'll add you back.

9) I'm adding this because I've seen lots of new members asking how they can make use of the smileys on this site. There are also a few secret smileys that aren't on the list yet.

10) I've been asked to write something explaining tags and their use so read this post if you need some help with that.

I just had a hard time getting back into this internetty business. It's only now I can confidently say I know my way round this site, and I've been at it a month. Figured a little help for new members would be a nice thing to do.

Nope. BB code is how you add links to your posts, or photos.

The number is the name of the post. As I haven't got a post that matches that id number it just took it to my frontpage.

And I followed it and it went back to your main page but back to same time 14th and 15th. How do you change to different links and times? Hey!!! with the exception of the one Opera lets you install I just put in my first link. :up: :hat:

It's not about the times, it's about the id of the post. There's some more info on Red's page plus some homework. :lol:

Right that part of the address is best explained in none web terms. Think of it as a letter being sent to someone.

SHOW=send the letter

DML=oi, if you're sending the letter, I'm gonna tell you which one to send.

The numbers are the web address of the letter.

Try replacing the numbers with the word "sticky" without the quotes and see where it takes you.

What you put there is a very brief description of the link.
For example, the link next to your comment says avl_wamp but the link is actually to my.opera.com/avl_wamp/info .

Musta done something wrong. It took me back to page 1 with all the comment boxes showing,made my mouse pointer flip out flickering and seemed to cheese off the server monkeys, wtf?

Yep, that's the link to my sticky post. While making the post I used the advanced options to change the post url to the word sticky. Doing that enables easy linking to the post because I can always remember that word while the numbers may be forgotten.

You starting to see how it works now?

Mik, when i followed that link it took me to some weird blog view showing all your posts with a comment box underneath. Is that what you expected? It looked like some secret option.

Aha!!!

When you're typing a link with a word instead of numbers as the address, you don't need the show.dml part in there.

Just
