A Mobile 2.0 User Speaks About Smarter Phones That Aren't Smartphones
Sunday, 15. April 2007, 22:02:15
I'm writing this article because so many people seem to underestimate the potential of mobile phones these days. Whenever I tell someone on here that I write my page only using my phone the reaction is usually a mixture of disbelief and pity. People still think of phones as slow and nasty, including some of the people who are in the same situation as me. Maybe by the end of this article I'll change some of your minds. Who knows, miracles may happen.
First, a little scene setting. I'm a 29 year old man who lives in the UK and I'm addicted to mobile technology, specifically mobile phones. Strange really as I rarely make calls to anyone unless I absolutely have to. I use my phone mostly as a data device and a two-way pager (using SMS and MMS).
The other thing to know about me and my phone is that I don't own a "smartphone" yet. But that doesn't mean my phone is dumb, far from it in fact. With a little searching I've managed to find a few java applications that work on most phones and provide me with, amongst other things, full e-mail, instant messaging, web access, RSS feeds, an eBook reader and search engine, and several news widgets. In this post I'm going to tell you about the best free applications and how to get hold of them. So, lets start with the obvious one.
Opera Mini
It had to be didn't it. When you're looking for a way to browse the internet using your mobile phone, there really is no other choice unless you've got a smartphone. It's quick, usually reliable enough, and integrates nicely with the phone's built in software. A must have for all mobile users.

Google Mail
This is the java e-mail client that puts all others to shame. You need to have a gMail account set up in order to use this but it's well worth it. I've seen plenty of web based e-mail clients that don't work half as well as this. At the time of writing each user has 2840 mb of storage available to keep messages so theres no reason to ever delete a message again. Almost every feature of the full web version of gMail is available on this application. Another essential if you already have a gMail account or are willing to open yet another e-mail account.
Get it here and register for gMail here.
Windows Live Messenger
This isn't a bad little instant messaging client at all. It even supports basic smileys and the data usage is quite low, which is useful if you're on a limited data plan. Truthfully this isn't the instant messenger I use the most, but it's compatible with most phones so I'm putting it here. My personal choice is Ultra IM pro but there's currently no way to get a full version of that for free and it doesn't work on some phones.
Get it here or test the free Ultra IM trial edition.
Widsets
This is a neat little desktop application for your phone. Basically it's a blank space to hold widgets in. There's a few of them at the moment. Some news feeds, a few games, weather reports and the like.
Currently I've got mine set up to receive a word of the day, 2 quotes of the day, a joke of the day, a few newsfeeds (science, technology and weird news), and a custom news reader is keeping an eye out for all stories that contain a tag I set up.
My favourite feature of Widsets is the ability to send a bookmark to your own e-mail address so you can read full articles online at your leisure. Used in conjunction with Opera Mini and your choice of e-mail, this makes the service a lot more useful. I grab what I'm looking for using Widsets, send the bookmarks of the things that really interest me, then use Opera Mini to read the full articles later on.

Mobizines
This is a java based magazine reader, with an optional RSS reader. In the UK there are only about twenty magazines available to read. Each updates regularly and you can choose when to download the latest edition rather than have it forced onto you.
While not a serious Mobile 2.0 application, it is a good way to fill some spare time, like a commute to work for instance. The magazines aren't very large but they can be informative, and the application comes with a function to save articles that you like so they wont be erased when you get the next issue.

Wattpad
I've tried a lot of e-book readers since I got this phone and was disappointed to find that most barely work at all. One of the worst was Wattpad. While it had a pretty big collection of books online, it only loaded part of the book at a time and had to go online to retrieve the next few pages. While that in itself was a nuisance, the fact that any loss in connection while this was happening trashes the application completely made me delete it and forget about it.
So now you're wondering why it's listed here as my book reader aren't you. Well, things changed about a week ago. The little boffins at Wattpad added a new feature to the application. Now you can choose to download the entire book as a seperate java application packaged in it's own version of the Wattpad reader. Suddenly the only problems I had with Wattpad don't exist anymore.
Now I keep the main application in my phone as a way of finding books I'm interested in. Once I've found something I go to the menu and download it. While searching there are several methods that can be utilised, including by category, name or a short identification code found on the website.
While reading there are plenty of features to help make the experience smoother. The options can be set up with different background and text colours as well as font sizes. You can choose to automatically keep the backlight on as well as to rotate the text into landscape mode. A quick press of the right soft key starts the text auto scrolling. Finally, when you've finished reading the application automatically keeps a bookmark at the place you finished reading.

I Hope This Helps
I know a lot of people come here using their mobile phones and devices. I hope this has helped at least one person get a little more from their phone than they have been doing up til now.
If anyone has found better applications then leave me a comment to let everyone know.

Got Gmail and it works much better than my previous.. also think they cut me off coz no email was coming through(with my previous email provider)

I've sent a suggestion into Google asking them to add an option to gMail that allows us to keep it auto-updating regularly with an audible alert if anything new arrives. That way I can keep it running in the background all day instead of having to keep checking manually.

I think the provider cut me coz a pal sent them a 'strong' email that all her messages got treated as spam or something.. Also it didn't allow me to view certain HTML

Having said that I'm actually working on an update to this post aimed at s60 users. A couple of these apps will make it on there as will Mobipocket but I've also found the best freeware file manager, spam manager, ZIP manager, task manager, text editor and a few more fun things that are essential softwares to me.
You do know you don't have to use the Mobipocket site to get books that work with it don't you? I've found plenty of free books that work just great. Also installed a new font for my reading pleasure.
