Bolano
Prague-based Argo Publishing brings The Savage Detectives (Los detectivos salvajes) by Chilean writer Roberto Bolano (1953 - 2003) to Czech readers. This large tome translated by Anežka Charvátová as Divocí detektivové is one of the most important novels of contemporary literature written in Spanish.

synth ringtone
Last year I made many phone ringtones using the phone synthesizer. Let's see (and hear) it now.
aHiss.midThis should be a (bit scary) downloadable midi file, a ringtone playable by any phone. Enjoy!
Well, I tried to download it now. The DL went ok, but then the midi file (.mid) was in the process somehow corrupted, so it wouldn't play. If there's anyone who could help me with an advice in this case, I'd truly appreciate it. (Strange, the first couple of midi synth ringtones I made and posted here could be downloaded, and played. Then, something happened... So it goes...)

steampunk, science fiction
I would like to upload a cover of Boneshaker by Cherie Priest. Let's see if I can make it using OM & my Nokia phone.

OK, this should be it. One of the best of the recent steampunk novels. Yippee!
Find more about Cherie Priest and her books at her site, blog, and a site about Boneshaker

Michal Ajvaz, fantasy, science fiction
My favourite Czech writer made it to Amazon Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Top Ten. His novel The Other Town (Druhé město) is number six in this Top 10. The labyrinthine story of the magical other side of Prague is Ajvaz's (pronounced EYE-vuz) first book translated into English. Highly recommended, especially for the fans of J. L. Borges.
Michal Ajvaz - The Other City (Eastern European Literature), paperback, 148 pages. Translated by Gerald Turner. Dalkey Archive Press (June/July) 2009. ISBN 978-1564784916. Amazon.com US$ 11.86, Amazon.co.uk £ 10.99, Amazon.ca CDN$ 11.02.

Bookworm, online fiction, ReadPrint
I found two great sites recently. Bookworm -
http://bookworm.oreilly.com or
http://m.bookworm.oreilly.com is an online epub ebooks viewer. You can upload your selection of ebooks and then read them any time you like.
The other site is ReadPrint -
http://www.readprint.com which has many novels, short stories and quotations by 355 authors, you can read them online even utilizing your mobile phone with Opera mini.
Both sites are recommended for any book addict.
Another source of online literature is Literature Network -
http://www.online-literature.com. The best sources of well-formatted epub ebooks are
http://gutenberg.org and
http://www.feedbooks.com.

poll, happy
If you are happy please take part in my poll. If you are not happy now please take part in my poll too. And if you don't know that's the reason for taking part in my poll. "Let's do it, let's fall in love." (Cole Porter)

Bradley Denton, science fiction
Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede, this long time out-of-print, award-winning, amazing and very funny SF novel by Bradley Denton (see the Links for the free download plus a link to Bradley Denton's site) is currently being made into an independent moving picture and its release is scheduled for 2010.

The painting by Kent Bash shows Oliver Vale, the main character of the novel, on his faithful and beloved 1957 Ariel Cyclone motorcycle "Peggy Sue".

Shaw, Lethe, Singer
Once upon a time I read a short story collection The Bet on the Dead Jockey by Irwin Shaw. One of the stories is about an aging man who goes to work every day. One day he realizes that he can't find his way back home. There's a similar story by Isaac Bashevis Singer - it appeared in The New Yorker years ago, but, as you may have guessed, I've forgotten its title. Oh boy, I keep forgetting the most elementary words, names... The sunny shores of the River of Forgetting are getting closer and closer.

music
Yesterday I found that Save Me written and performed by Aimee Mann is not on the Vanilla Sky soundtrack I'd always thought but on Magnolia OST (1999). Both the film and music are exceptional.
