EHEC

So this is the killer. EHEC or Enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli. It kills two thousand people in the USA each year. It killed my favourite British SFF writer Robert Holdstock last year (check my post on this). And now it kills eaters of Spanish bio-cucumbers in Germany, and elsewhere.
I'm afraid that the reason of such an outbreak is a lack of basic hygiene habits. Washing your hands and thorough washing what you intend to eat.
Still, if you spot this perpetrator, don't hesitate to shoot to kill, and don't forget to aim exactly at its eye. And then wash your hands.
Or just ask Captain Marvel and he will zap it right between the eyes!

I hear that washing veg does not always get rid of ecoli, as it is very good at sticking to stuff.yikes

That's bad news. I was convinced that thorough washing AND peeling the cucumbers etc would be enough to be on the safe side.

Peeling is probably good.
They now reckon that the source of this new strain of ecoli is watercress from northern Germany.
So your cucumbers may be safe after all!

I'm not a great fan of salad cucumbers, but I love pickled small ones. On Friday, I bought red peppers ('paprikas'), but after peeling (or skinning) them almost nothing would remain. Maybe blanching (?) (after pouring boiling water on them, the skin goes off) might do the trick. Taste of crunchy fresh pepper would be gone, I'm afraid.

Correction: for watercress read beansprouts.
