George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London revisited

BBC correspondent Emma Jane Kirby revisits locations of George Orwell's famous book after 80 or so years after its publication... With rather disturbing impresions. More facts are here. "Because by and large people are good, aren't they?"

So do I. Maybe he would have chosen different places, 'Amexica', tsunami stricken Japan, or Somalia. Yes, The Times They Are A-changin', and lyrics of this 1963 song, hand-written by Bob Dylan, were sold last December for $422,500. You're right, some things just don't change at all.

. . well recently was in prague briefly and it occurred to me that city wud not be too bad to be down and out in ! . dont know much about the place but the down n outs i saw looked well enough and things like booze, tobacco and food are cheap and good quality and in a city easy to navigate . but of course it gets very cold in winter . .

Summer in a city is ok. But there are several frozen homeless (mostly) men each winter. Some were even attacked and killed. They are easy target for psychos.

In today's news - a Prague taxi-driver kicked down a homeless man (67) urinating at his taxi; then stomped on his head and kicked him in the face. Senseless brutality. More incredible acts in Liberec where a homeless man was burned to death just for the fun of it.

. . thats so sick . does justice protect homeless properly? . are there more 'psycho's there than anywhere else? wud not think so . . in uk lots homeless have 'dogs'for company and protection . . not sure if this attitude is modern or if its always been . . i have been homeless and also in hostels and stuff, even now am officially homeless, tho have place . think Orwell was priveleged and really just researching for writing, which is ok but of couse the typical homeless may be completely alone . . . so it goes ? !

It's just beyond my understanding. You can become homeless overnight. Reasons why people are homeless may be different but they remain human beings and deserve, at least, a little respect.

Disorder, unrest, riots and looting reported in London and many other cities in the UK.
