This man, Michael Kocáb [here in an Andy Warhol wig and wearing weird glasses, together with white gloves his typical performance gimmicks] (1954), rocker (Pražský výběr) and (then) President of the Parliamentary Commision for withdrawal of Soviet troops, made it happen. Soviet troops occupied Czechoslovakia since the Warsaw Pact armies intervention on 21 August 1968. There were 67 Soviet army bases with 73,500 soldiers and 40,000 members of their families here. There were 1,220 tanks, 2,505 combat and armoured vehicles, 1,218 howitzers, 76 fighter aircraft, 146 combat helicopters, and 95,000 metric tons of ammunition.
Soldiers and their arms were withdrawn to Soviet Union in 925 transports, the trains of which would form a line 470 kilometers long.
Damages caused by the troops amounted to 14,8 billion Kč. While 290 Czechoslovak citizens died and 577 were badly wounded in connection with the troops since 1968.
The last Soviet soldier, General Eduard Vorobyov, left Prague (flying to Kiev) on 27 June 1991.
The withdrawal was celebrated at Sports Hall in Prague on 24 June 1991. The 'Adieu CA' concert with Pražský výběr and the Guest of Honour Frank Zappa was broadcast live also on Czechoslovak TV and recorded on Pražský výběr CDs.
