¡Hazlo por Cuba! [By Request Only]

Aquí todos ustedes van. The release of SNdB 48, the Cuba béisbol season of 2008-09. The regular season completed on May 2, so it doesn't get more timely than this.

Also, we add 1 new BP (Latinoamericano) and 6 more Entry pix.

This is a computer only SAdv set that requires ownership of V 14 for authorization purpose.

Available here as well are the previous 2 Cuban league seasons, SNdB 46 (2006-07) and SNdB 47 (2007-08). For these SAdv, computer only, exclusive sets, V 12 is required for 46, and V 13 for 47.

¡Cuán maravilloso! Más magia pequeña de GarLen.

¡Muy interesante! This is impressive. Obtaining the data was probaly not all too easy (then again, maybe it is?). I think that this league will be very interesting since we generally know very little about most of the Cuban players or teams. We don't have much relative data to compare the Cubans with, except it is obvious that they have some very talented players who are clearly MLB quality from the international teams they put together. Occasionaly during their season I pick up a Cuban braodcast and listen to a few innings, but I have never paid too close attention. I wonder how this league compares with the current Japanese leagues for overall quality. I will try it when I get a chance and will give you some comments.

kenf01 23. July 2007, 04:53

I did try it out quickly to make sure it downloaded and played OK. Had no problems, except not quite sure how to implement the anthem. I assume it replaces the Canadian anthem, but do I need to do anything special? It really looks like a wonderful new toy! Should be lots of fun.

Guys,

What an incredible set. I have used your files for many as played and other projects and can't wait to try this out. I think I may have to crank out some Salsa and Mambo music in the background.

Thanks

"give you some comments."

Please do. That's what will be most interesting for Gary + I to read. We're very curious to read what your experiences will be with this set. If there are problems, support, or advice we can share. Down the road, how you've been using the cards (straight replay, all stars, traveling road show). I think everyone who gives this set a go will become interested in reading about all the different experiences their cohorts have. And certainly if there are gamers who are knowledgeable about the Cuban league they can be really helpful to everyone by corresponding.

"how to implement the anthem."

Add this tag to your file in Data (right click, rename, add _old). That way you can leave the Canada file (a wav file) where it is. [Then when you're done playing Cuba, or Japan, you can remove the Cuba/Japan substitute to a different folder, and go back and edit out the _old from the original Canada.] Now right click, rename, the La Bayamesa file to Canada and move it into Data. Unfortunately there is no more seamless way of manipulating the files than by hand editing as the game only recognizes the anthems if they're named for the Norte Americanos.

"I may have to crank out some Salsa and Mambo music"

Or Son Cubano, especially when you're playing the farm boys.

kenf01 24. July 2007, 03:13

OK, just tried to play a few games, managing the Gallos (hey, the only player I remember by name is on this team - do you blame me?). I'll have to go back to the WBC and find the players they used. Got everything to work, except that the ballpark (especially the night version) is a bit fuzzy. During the day games, the catcher sits in the middle of the stadium stats. I've got a 17" monitor, but the SOM stadiums don't give me any problem; might be intersting to put this on my downstairs PC with a 19" monitor. Just curious if you all had the same issue? I've got a lot to learn about this league. I'm going to have to see if i can find season stats for these guys, to make sure they get used sort of correctly. I think I know where to go get them.

GarLen 24. July 2007, 03:58

The Pan Am Gold Medal game box is linked to under "these players had" above.

The WBC stats for Cuba are
http://ww2.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/stats/stats.jsp?t=t_ibp&cid=798
The WBC final box is here
http://sports.espn.go.com/extra/worldbaseballclassic/boxscore?key=20060320WBBCCUBAJAPAN0

I make the parks in V 11 since I've done so many (unfinished) mods to my V 12 platform, but I know what you mean about the BP detail overlap. Unfortunately that's the way it is, as you can't move the BP detail (tho you can turn it off). Latinoamerica is the best that we could find.

Since you can read Spanish you should be able to understand the stats selection here, which gives you access to a lot of detail, and if not complete, is probably more than enough for your needs,
http://www.baseballdecuba.com/

Or for player stats, just open all the Team Reports for them. You can save, import these into Excel.

kenf01 24. July 2007, 04:41

I found Bjarkman's web site, and from there went to the baseballdecuba site. Not the best I've seen, but I got around it pretty well (as you say, it helps to understand Spanish - I was born in Venezuela and have lots family there on my mom's side, so considering the current politics in that country I am not too thrilled with Cuba at this time, but baseball, well, that is a little different - maybe). Not all links in the site work very well. I found the basic stats, batting and pitching, but was hoping to find the fielding which would give me some idea of how many games played at each position. Still looking, but that may be more difficult to track down without having the Cuban league handbooks. The Bjarkman book on the Cuban baseball history looks interesting. I have an older book (pub. 2003 also by MacFarland) written by Jorge Figueredo that covers Cuban Baseball from 1878-1961 which is fascinating.

One other question: at least for the first few days of the season, I have been unable to get the 40/25 minor leaguers to work. When I look at the promote/demote minor leaguers I get the normal listing for 25 players, say 14/11 or 15/10, with the others unchecked. But once I start playing the roster shows about 33 players available, even though I have checked off to use the 40/25 option.

Anyway, this set seems to be a lot of fun. 'Nuff for today.

"fielding which would give me some idea of how many games played at each position"

We can supply that. I just have to reformat it into something that you can decipher from the files that we worked with. When I do I'll add it to the stats file.

"Cuban baseball history"

I have to get a man's permission to do a project. There's some real old Cuba data I'd like to use for SOM cards.

"I have been unable to get the 40/25 minor leaguers to work."

That is because the season opens in December, and so the computer is applying September roster rules. The best thing to do if this bothers you or you're not playing the games manually is to change Minors 40/25 to Minors Ineligible. We wanted to preserve the actual Cuban season's calendar rather than change the season dates to conform with an MLB type schedule.

kenf01 25. July 2007, 02:00

Thanks, appreciate the fast responses. Never thought about the September/December issue re the 40/25 problem. Rather obvious. What rules does the SNB use as far as roster size? I assume it is not as big as 33, but then again, 25 may not be the true number. I think there is a "minor" league system in Cuba, which I would guess works to some extent like the MLB/minors. Under the circumstances, using AP would solve the issue. So would a simple transaction file, which at least would limit players and then using the minor inelligible switch would really work well. I'd be interested in knowing something about maybe doing the AP, but not really sure about the time comitment. I think it would depend on what sort of "schedule" you guys have in mind for maybe completing an AP. Feel free to drop me an email, I think you guys can get it from my profile (if not let me know and I will pass it on).

88 Luis Medina 26. July 2007, 03:38

Your hard work is appreciated, this is above and beyond.

GarLen 26. July 2007, 04:40

"What rules does the SNB use as far as roster size?"

This is worth a read,
http://www.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20040128&content_id=631584&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=null

"So would a simple transaction file"

It wouldn't be quite that simple, but an AP would be helpful.
Whoever wants to make it should expect to spend some serious time compiling the boxes (Rob can do the SOM coding switches) and filling out the Starter Schedule, and then making some best guesses on teams' away rosters. (We can get by without this last item if the first 2 are made though.) It will mean a devotion of time and patience by a willing party. You'd have to commit to see it through; we don't want to devote time to getting you up to speed only to have you bow out. So, with all that said, if anybody is crazy enough to want to give creating an AP a go that would be quite a bonus.

bearman14 27. July 2007, 00:49

Cool thanks for the special treat. Will have to play this down the road.

I finally got around to reading the 2004 articles on the Cuban leagues, etc. The articles were quite interesting, and essential reading to try to play the season. Thanks for the web site. Also thanks for providing the fielding information, again that is useful information.

Thanks again guys, have played quite a few games and the style reminds me of 70's National League baseball, with more patient hitters.
