Pet Peeves. I have a Pet Peeeve, and I'd like to share it with you today, not that anyone out there will thank for for the effort.

I work in a building of many floors. My particular floor is comprised of two wings, neatly segregated by a trio of lifts and a pair of toilets: one male, one female. Of all the people that work on our floor - and a very nice floor it is too, tastefully decorated and windowed all the way around:

I, at 32 years of age, am one of the younger denizens. Most are 40+, some even older (we hang our coats on them, helping them keep busy in their dotage).

So why is it, right, why is it that SOMEone hereabouts does not seem capable of flushing a toilet after using it?

:yuck:

Time after time I open a cubicle door to be confronted with either a bowl of yellow/orangey fluid (Still 'sparkling') or, even worse, masses of toilet paper covering a reeking mass of something more solid.

:yuck::yuck::yuck:

*Best Anne Robinson voice*
Who is the two-year-old that has not been potty trained?
Which one of you needs to think seriously about wearing nappies again?
Who the hell uses a toilet these days and doesn't flush!?!?

There's a serious beatdown coming for this person when I find them. :irked:

In lighter news, I've been quiet on the blogging front through no obvious design or intent that I can discern: either I've simply been doing other things, or my life really isn't interesting enough to be committing to the web right now, most likely the latter. The Beard is back, if anyone finds that newsworthy. I doubt I've lost any weight this week (but my paranoias are well documented in these pages already so I shan't go into them again). Mandriva Linux has finally been released, I'll be looking into that on Saturday when I get some time free. And, er, I did some training at work yesterday that was as dull and tedious as could reasonably be expected. I've enjoyed some interesting dreams...oh, and I've been playing a fair few games on the PC lately.

I bought Knights of the Old Repulic 2: The Sith Lords (try saying that mouthful three times fast!)(Er, you really don't have to) and the complete Myst collection. KOTOR is a Star Wars RPG - I get to fulfill my fantasies of being a kick-ass female Jedi while being insulted by Sith (evil Jedi), droids, aliens, crew-members and random Non-Player Characters...while Myst, for the uneducated, is a series of interactive slideshows creatively disguised as interactive entertainment, focusing on story-telling and letting you solve fiendishly difficult puzzles. While much derided in the popular gaming press, the first Myst game sold MILLIONS (and was re-made twice) while the rest, including the Uru spin-offs, have enjoyed a strong cult following ever since. I've played 1, 2 and half of 3 (I gave up on it 'cos it wasn't as good as 1 or 2) so am very much looking forward to games 4 and 5, 5 supposedly being the last ever. For anyone that hasn't tried the Myst games and fancies themselves a bit clever - maybe I'm speaking to anyone out there with a Nintendo DS and Brain Age? - you might find yourselves pleasantly occupied by some time spent in the Myst world(s).

Or not, knowing how fickle some of you lot are.

So there we are. My blog post, and week of my life, in two words: Crappy and Geeky

Interesting dreams. :right:

GrantTLC 11. April 2008, 08:31

Yeah, some really bizarre ones. Like going shopping in Holland, a country I've never been to (and I don't like shopping!). Or the one where I was running an amateur drama group during it's descent into politiking and civli war. Or last night's, where I was lost in some spooky abandonded town...

Interesting dreams.

kirstycat 11. April 2008, 19:30

I have been having really crazy dreams too!! I won't go into detail, but they always involve me being in places I have never been before and don't recognise. I thought dreams were supposed to be made up of things you have done in the past, or places you have been...?!

Why don't you put a little sign up in your work toilets expressing your outrage and disgust? That should get the message across!

GrantTLC 11. April 2008, 22:17

I wanted to put a sign up, but I wanted to wait until the mood was right: I thought If I was really sarcastic and in-your-face it would get taken down, and if I was diplomatic and official I might get away with it.

But I really just wanted to punch whoever was doing it in the head, you know?

I'm glad someone else has been having crazy dreams because I'm losing sleep over them and I thought it was just me. Nice to know somoeone elsoe if suffering!

kirstycat 12. April 2008, 06:47

hmm, I don't know about suffering! I wake up from these adventures completely exhausted, but they are fun! Like my own personal and unpredictable adventure film that no-one else can see

I find that the most effective way to deal with complaining about something is to try to stay calm, and approach the problem assuming that the person will see you point of view and change thier evil ways.

When I have worked in shops, I have always responded better to customers who come up to me and explain why they are not happy nice and calmly, without shouting at me! But of course it's a bit different with you, as it is the fault of the person you are speaking to!

Of course, if the polite, diplomatic and official approach is uneffective, then i'm sure a few signs conveying the extent of your outrage should get the message across!

galadriel 12. April 2008, 10:05

I don't think the toilets are that big a deal. At least what you find isn't errr brown! If the people have only been drinking water, it's just water sitting in the bowl, but if it's yellow, I guess they NEED more water in their diet. Perhaps you should let them know ! P:

I don't know two words for my life duirng the past week...Dull and thinkinglots (I know that's two words)

daxonmacs 12. April 2008, 12:23

I guess a sign like: "There's enough crap on 32 nd already, flusht!"
would be taken down, a more humorous approach might err stick longer
ps do you subscribe to mandriva? I think it is not bad as an os but way to expensive.

GrantTLC 12. April 2008, 14:38

I don't subscribe to Mandriva, no. Paying for Linux seems peverse somehow....but I do often wonder what more you'd get with the full-on package as sold.

Mandriva do a couple of free editions. One called, er, 'One': a single Live CD (You can demo Mandriva from the CD without having to install it) based on either KDE or Gnome and includes some proprietary software (Flash, DVD codecs, graphics drivers, etc). This is the one I've been using and, by a remarkable coincidence I have just finished downloading and burning the finished Mandriva Spring ISO to a CD!

The other is called 'Free', spans three CD's I believe (or 1 DVD) and is the philosophically free edition, being completely open-source from the ground up.

daxonmacs 12. April 2008, 14:57

If your pc is Pentium III or higher ( or athlon- equal), that is i686, you might consider Frugalware.Very nice, I used to use it on my pc from time to time, until linux was no longer handling my network card ( on-board nvidia).

GrantTLC 12. April 2008, 15:48

Hmm. Having had a quick look it does seem like and interesting distro, but on it's summary page it states it's aimed at an intermediate level user, "Someone who isn't afraid of using text commands"

That really isn't me at this point in time! Hopefully not for too much longer, though...

daxonmacs 12. April 2008, 16:06

Oh but the installer is pretty straightforward and packagemanagement too.
Then there's always the forum and irc channels to ask for help

You should feel lucky you have not been signed off work with stress like tricky dicky - clearing out temporary housing, moving furniture and dealing with syringes etc. The poor bloke is at witts end and could be in line for a huge payout from the Council!

That doesn't sound good, and yeah it does kinda put my toilet-abuse troubles into perspective. Poor Andrew. I'll have to give him a call.
