So you want to try Linux...

With Microsoft's latest OS, Vista, being a disappointment for many, and Apple still pushing the boundaries of what they can charge people for Macs, the Linux community has worked hard to become much more polished and attractive, sensing an opportunity to reclaim some ground from the monolithic MS.

It's a particularly good choice for PC owners fed up with XP's eccentricities and reluctant to buy a whole new system to cope with Vista's bloated running requirements; Linux works on any common retail hardware, be it brand new or ten years old. 18 months ago I took a very good look at Vista and didn't much like what I saw. Nor was I ready to run out and buy a new PC as my then 3-year old system was still running perfectly well (She's still doing a fabulous job with only the very latest games making her struggle). Vista to me represented a huge expense for very little gain, the very antithesis of what computers should be all about.

Enter Linux.

Back then I had to do much of the leg-work myself; lots of google searching: reading of various websites, of various lengths and quality: looking up terminology and jargon...but if I'd had all the information I needed in one place then things might have proceeeded much more quickly.

So it's good thing my friend Pariah has come up with just such a website.

Designed for the absolute beginner (She's not far away from being one of those herself!) she has obviously thought long and hard about what information she could have benefitted from, and has written very clear and concise step-by-step guides based on those experiences. I'm thoroughly impressed with how she's covered every aspect of what a newcomer will need to get started, and what they need to know to help them settle in to what can be a very different and unusual experience compared to Window's unhelpful mollycoddling. She has also tried and reviewed a dozen of the multitude of different Linux distributions available; because of her own low system specs she's chosen some of the lesser-known distros but this works in her favour as you won't have any trouble finding reviews of the big names elsewhere.

If you are thinking of giving Linux a whirl, for whatever reason, you could do a lot worse than pay her site a visit. (NB: At the moment it's a work-in-progress but there's already a wealth of information there - enjoy!)

Settling in to Facebook

, ,

Woot!

Now that I've decided to give Facebook another go, I'm trying to get my PC set up to help me interact with it in the easiest way possible. This has proven complicated on a couple of points:

  1. Opera is my default browser but currently has problems interacting with the site. A quick check of the forums shows that Opera themsevles are aware of this and are working to correct it. Don't know how much longer this will take to sort, though. :frown:

  2. Firefox works on Windows fine but in Linux I couldn't open Firefox as a normal user, I had to be root which on Mandriva is kinda complicated. Perfectly do-able, but kind of a pain to do every time I need a browser. But thanks to a quick search on google this has now been sorted! Turns out it was a problem with Fx's profile folder. As per the advice I found, renaming the folder to something innocuous forced Firefox to make a new one and after that it behaved perfectly. This is great. Opera is a brilliant browser but there are a few sites I need, e.g- my bank, that don't recognise it and therefore don't work properly. Having Firefox easily accesible means I can now rely on it as a backup. :hat: (NB: Mandriva still only have the Firefox 2 series in their repositories, even though Firefox 3 is almost finished and is wonderfully fast and stable. When Mandriva get around to including 3, probably after release, I may have to re-evaluate the browser situation...!)

Also, it seems someone has written a toolbar for Firefox that lets a user interact with Facebook - recieve updates and the like, easy navigation, etc - all without having to have the page itself open in a tab! I forsee this becoming very useful in future and urge any Firefox/Facebook-using ppl out there to have a look.

Mandriva Love

Ohmygod...I LOVE Mandriva Linux!

Today I downloaded the new alpha2-release Live CD of 2008.1, Mandriva's forthcoming Spring iteration, hoping to cure a plethora of headaches the system had developed after I upgraded it to death last weekend.

Wow, talk about your panaceas! Not only did it fix every single problem I had, I discovered that I can reinstall the guts of the OS without worrying about my precious data because they're kept in separate partitions! No more saving everything to disk/USB drive and then having to set every application and system setting again after the reinstall! Even my choice of desktop wallpaper survived the upgrade! WOOHOO! :hat:

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to hug Natalie's base unit for a while...

Yes, yes, I've been writing more of the Dunkeld piece, keep your hair on. You should have something to read tomorrow, although I might now split the piece into two parts. If I throw the several thousand words of it at you all at once I have a feeling you'll all run screaming...

Meanwhile, I've been tinkering with another Linux Distro. Since the Summer I've been happily beavering away with Sabayon, an italian distro I became enamoured with due to its cutting edge package list and ease of use. But there were several problems when I started - such as the printer not working - and it seems to have recently developed several more, a couple of which are growing rather irritating as they are jamming the upgrade process itself. I'm only a beginner in the linux world, so rather than tear my hair out reading lengthy manuals and possibly making things worse I thought I'd have a look around and see what else is happening in Distro-land.

Enter Mandriva. :sherlock:

I downloaded a CD ISO, burned that quick-sharp, and booted up the Live CD for a preliminary look-see. After all this time with Sabayon I didn't think it was possible for Linux to impress me further, but Mandriva did just that. Quick - optimised for Pentium class processors: Easy to use - several clear and very handy control centre options (perfect for Linux novices like me): great sound - the new pulseaudio system played some startlingly clear music for me (Poor old Sabayon struggles in the sound dept, and I don't know how to fix her). It even loaded and configured drivers for my printer without so much as a complaint. The printed test page was a complete delight after all this time of having to boot back into Windows just to print a page of text. No compiz, which is a shame, but then the version I tested is an Alpha version of software being developed for release in spring of next year, which promises all the graphical frippery I could need, bleeding-edge packages across the board and even the first release of the hot new KDE window manager (v4). And can I just say I LOVE how quickly it installs software after all these months of slowly compiling it from source code! Sorry, Sabayon; unless you improve drastically in the next few months I forsee a change of Linux setup in the not-too distant future!

Finally, I just want to say that I've done bloody well today getting work finished and keeping myself awake after my neighbours up and across decided to have a screaming match at 3am that lasted OVER AN HOUR. I lost hours worth of sleep because of them, and have been in a murderous mood all goddam day. But on the bright side I'M NOW ON MY HOLIDAYS - yippee! :hat:

Right. I'm off to bed. Disturb at your own Peril. :knight:
