How to know you're in a paralell universe
Sunday, September 11, 2011 6:31:06 AM
1.The President of the United States is one of the people you least expect to be president.
2. Someone close to you, who passed away, is still alive where you've ended up. (Doctor Who, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Fringe)
3. Zeppelins are still widely used. (Fringe, Doctor Who)
4. There will be people who look like people you know but will be either considerably more ruthless or less inhibited sexually (or a combination of both). (Various Star Treks, Doctor Who, Fringe)
5. One or more of your male colleagues/friends whom you've never seen with a beard or a mustasch sports one. (Or if you've always seen them with facial hair then their paralell universe counterpart will be cleanshaven). (Star Trek, Doctor Who).

LGBT character spotlight: Carrie Rivai
Wednesday, July 20, 2011 11:54:38 AM

Carrie Rivai (Sydney Tamiia Poitier)
Knight Rider (2008)
Her hair is long, dark and wavy. She steps out of the water. She walks across the beach carrying a surf board. She puts it aside and walks into the house by the beach. Inside, there's someone in the bed. Another lady. She seems nice but she is baffled by the fact that she, as a stranger, had been invited into the home of the other woman. The other woman assures her that there is nothing to worry about. Then she gets a call. It was duty that called. She gets dressed, and takes her gun and her badge. Her name is Carrie Rivai. She works for the FBI.
Now you've read all about Carrie's gay moment. Yes, moment... singular. It lasted maybe half a minute... a minute, or maybe two minutes. Three minutes, tops. Had you missed the pilot episode, or that one scene in the pilot, you wouldn't know that Carrie is supposed to be gay or bi. The straight characters, on the other hand, got their love/sex lives harped over all the time. We got the drawn out will-they-won't-they affair between Micheal Knight Jr. and Sarah Graiman, the daughter of KITT's creator. Just as drawn out were Billy the nerd's attempts to hit it on with the equally geeky Zoe. Billy also gets an episode where he scores with a girl in Vegas and even older gentleman Dr. Graiman (KITT's creator) gets to play a cat-and-mouse game with a lady bureaucrat. All Carrie got was a minute or two of the pilot episode. Double standards, anyone?
My verdict: The girl she had picked up in the pilot seemed nice. I really would have liked to see more of her. In fact, I would have liked it better if Carrie Rivai had been the show's main character. A lesbian riding around in a talking car and fighting crime. Yes, please!
LGBT visibility score: 1 out of 5. At least she's one of the good guys.

Morgana in "The Sorcerer's Shadow"

Morgana in “The Sorcerer’s Shadow” (ep 3.11)
IMHO, “The Sorcerer’s Shadow” is probably the first episode in season 3 to handle Morgana's turn to the dark side properly. Once again Uther is here her target. I still can't wrap my head around her suden hatred for Arthur and Guinevere, so it was nice to see her trying to get Uther killed, and in a way that nobody else would nesssarily get killed either. Her plan was pitch perfect: Instead of outright trying to kill him and possible facing execution should the plan fail, she uses Uther's own ego against him. He thinks participating in the tourment is his own idea, not hers. And the way she "naîvely" brought up the issue at the dinner table was wonderful:
Morgana: Remind me how many times you've won this tournament, Uther?
Uther: Three.
Morgana: That's a lot to live up to, Arthur.
Arthur: Indeed.
Morgana: I remember your last victory. You were a master in the arena. It's such a shame we won't see you compete again.
Uther: Who says you won't?
Morgana: I thought you said you were too old to take the field.
Uther: It's not age that stops me. I'd still prove a match for any man.
Arthur: Well, we won't be finding out.
Uther: Why ever not?
Arthur: Because I don't want you getting hurt.
Morgana: Do you think you could still win the crown?
Arthur: The kingdom needs him to rule, not to fight.
Uther: You think I can't do both?
Morgana: It is such a shame. It would have been good for the people to see you compete one last time.
But still, Arthur's probably right. You can't do everything.
Oooh, reverse phychology. Nice touch, Morgana!
It was also nice to see her smile charmingly again as opposed to have i stone cold glint in her eyes and an "evil" smirk of pantomime proportions:
http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy335/1nagromniloc/Merlin%20screencaps%20series%203%20a/3x11TheSorcerersShadow11.jpg
Please continue to present Morgana in this way. For the first time in season 3 she felt - despite her intentions - like the same character as the sweet Morgana of the past seasons. Right from the start it was Uther she hated, not Arthur, Gwen or the nameless guards on patrol at Camelot. Please keep her that way.

Morgana goes Evil: Character development or character derailment? / The Double Standards of the villains of "Merlin"
Thursday, February 3, 2011 1:25:36 PM
Reflections on the Merlin season 3 opener "The Tears of Uther Pendragon"

The season three opener kinda bugs me a bit… especially the changes they made to Morgana.
When Merlin tells her that she should use her magic for good she should have replied "But I am. I'm using it to take down that mass-murderer who calls himself king." I just wish she would have tried to explain her motives to Merlin in more altruistic terms, that is "we can save lives if we get rid of Uther". They're trying too hard to turn her into a villain. Sure, she was away for a year. Sure, she spent that time in the company of Morgause. So now the writers are implying that Morgana's changed because of that. Unfortunately, that just seems like poor replacement for actual character development. They've made her evil in an arrogant and gleeful fashion instead of making her a character who does what she does because she thinks it's the right thing to do. That was what motivated her in the previous two seasons. Why did they have to throw that out the window?
This is especially annoying since they are constantly trying to paint Uther as misguided and narrow-minded rather than as truly evil. Why can't they do the same with Morgana? IMHO, the first step they should take is reducing Morgana's gleefulness. Fewer evil grins, please. Also, having her kill a guard in cold blood seems like complete character derailment to me. Is this the same character that smuggled food out of the castle to starving people? Who selflessly risked her neck to save a druid boy? I want the old Morgana back!
I also find the way the dragon refers to Morgana as evil and hateful as rather thick. This coming from someone who indiscriminately barbecued men, women and children in the finale of the previous season!
The writers shouldn't be so forgiving toward the horrific deeds of many of the male characters while simultaneously trying to paint female characters like Morgana, Morgause and Nimueh as evil. So out of the characters that are not 100% good, are the female characters more evil than the male ones? Here's a comparison:
Female:
Nimueh: I tried to help Uther with family-planning but things didn't go the way he wanted them to go so Uther tried to kill me and my kind. This means war! Let's send a plague upon Camelot! OK, that got twarted. Let's kill Uther's son instead!

Morgause: He tried to kill me too, when I was little. I want to bring his kingdom to its knees!

Morgana: Uther sent my father out to battle and he got killed. Uther tried to kill my sister. He kept from me the fact that I had a sister and if he knew about my powers he would kill me too. He's essentially a serial killer... and I'm expected to love him?

Male:
Uther: Magic is evil, hence all who practice it are evil and should be destroyed. Children with powers too, cause otherwise they might grow up to dethrone me. And why am I seeing the ghosts of children I've had drowned?

Gaius: I stood by Uther's side when he had people executed en masse, so at the very least I'm a coward. I may also have skeletons in my closet.*
Also, I should have mentored Morgana just as I've mentored Merlin but I was too much of a chicken to actually do that. How on earth would I explain the lady's constant visits to my little workshop if I did mentor her?

*It's been hinted more than once that Gaius may have done bad things during the Great Purge but so far this has not been explored in more depth. (Possibly because this could damage his image as Merlin's kind and elderly mentor.)
Dragon (Kilgarrah, the Burninator): Burninating all of Camelot! Burninating all da peasants! Burninating all the peoples! And their thatched-roofed cottageeeeeess!

(Note: The above aren't actual quotes. I'm just fooling around a bit with the characters.
)
Crazy fact: If you go to BBC's official Merlin site and look at the "Characters" section you'll notice that Morgana is listed under both "Heroes" and "Villains - series III", Freya is oddly enough listed as a villain and strangest of all Uther and the Dragon are only listed in the "Heroes" section.

Why Kela's student allowance system is a joke
Wednesday, December 1, 2010 9:16:59 AM
Reason #1: All stick and no carrot
The student allowance system in this country is wrong on so many levels it's unbelievable. It would take all week to list all the reasons, so I'll start with one of the more obvious ones:
Every year they expect us student to pass courses worth a certain amount of credits, but if you miss the mark even by a little they'll threaten to pull the plug on your student allowance all together. So if you miss the mark by 5 credits you'll be treated the same as if you've missed it by 40 credits (that is, accomplished next to to nothing during an entire year). Last year I only managed to scramble together 39 credits instead of the expected 43 credits. I met the requirements by 90% or so. So, If I've only met the requirements by 90%, then why can't they instead give me 90% of the money I'm entitled to? It's so binary. Either you meet the requirements and get about 900 euros per year, or if you fail they'll threaten to take it away completely. There's no consolation price. There's no reward for trying.
A recent survey of the accomplishments of student from a university and an art school showed that over half of the students studying at these two institutions had problems meeting the requirements. Over half! But instead of making it easier for students to get the money, our politicians instead decided to raise the bar even higher demanding that students accomplish even more per year, raising the requirement from an average of 4,8 credits per month to 5 credits per month. I my case the requirements have changed from 43,2 to 45 credits per year. But I worked my ass off last year just to get 39 credits!
This is all part of the politicians' plan to make us complete our degrees faster. Unfortunately, it's having the opposite effect. Since the student allowance is a completely unreliable source of income, many students work part-time cause they need the money. And working part-time means they have less time and energy to focus on studying, which means that it will take longer for them to finish their degrees. Also, nothing is more demoralizing than getting a letter in the mail that essentially says "you didn't accomplish enough last year, you're not good enough". How is this supposed to encourage students to try?
This is why I personally feel that Kela should either pay a certain amount of money for each credit that a student scrambles together or pay per percentage of the expected sum (that is, if you meet the requirements by 10% you'll get 10% of the money, meet them by 70% you get 70% of the money etc.). At least then you'd get some reward for trying. I'm tired of getting punished for the 10% I didn't accomplish instead of being rewarded for the 90% I did accomplish.
