A good snubby

, ,

At the prospect of an Obama presidency, gun lovers across America are buying out guns likely to be banned/restricted by the president-elect during his term. Which has nothing to do with me. I'm not American nor am I interested in battle rifles. There is an upcoming gun show starting on the 13th and running through the 17th, and I'm getting the urge to buy a new piece.

I bought a pistol in the last gun show, so now I'm looking to getting a snubby revolver for concealed carry. Since .357 revolvers can load .38 special cartridges, I'm opting for a .357 snubby so that I can have a choice of the more powerful magnum round or the less powerful but still potent .38 special +p round. I've also chosen to go with a stainless finish due to the high humidity here, and also because I sweat a lot. Stainless steel isn't corrosion proof, but it's more resistant to rusting than blued steel. I'm waffling on whether to get a snubby with an exposed hammer or a shrouded one. It'll probably depend on whether I'll be carrying it in my pocket or in an inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster.

I've looked at the various snubbies available locally and whittled down my choices to three:

Smith & Wesson Model 60Smith & Wesson Model 640
Caliber: .357 Magnum/.38 SPL +P

Barrel Length: 2 1/8"
Front Sight: Black Blade Front
Rear Sight: Fixed

Overall Length: 6 5/8"
Weight: 22.5 oz.

Ruger SP101 KSP-321XRuger SP101
Caliber: .357 Magnum/.38 SPL +P
Capacity: 5 Rounds
Barrel Length: 2 1/4"
Front Sight: Fixed
Rear Sight: Fixed
Grip: Rubber w/ Synthetic Insert
Finish:Satin Stainles
Overall Length: 7"
Weight:26 oz

Taurus Model 605Taurus Model 605
Caliber: .357 Magnum/.38 SPL +P

Barrel Length: 2"

Which one should I get? I've set up a poll in the sidebar so go vote there. Then post here for your opinions of these three guns. If you answered Other in the poll, please post here what snubby you have in mind. No, I am not interested in your Glock 26, Walther PPK/S, Bersa Thunders, or other semi-auto. Maybe next year, at the next gun show. Or should I just wait for the new snubbies to be introduced next year? Massad Ayoob suspects that there might be an aluminum framed Ruger SP101 coming out. And Taurus is teasing the public with its unreleased 6 shot .38 special snub nose.

Ah nostalgiaFirst day of school

I like guns, but yeah, they are nice and shiny.

If humidity is concern for you why don't you aim at non-steel guns? You write that you don't want a Glock, but I believe something "glockish" would be a good choice, though I'm no specialist in this matter. Anyway, have fun at the gun show. :)

I don't like the feel of the Glock 26 (subcompact 9mm). Plus, I want a gun that is guaranteed to go bang every time I fire it; and not have to worry about failure to feed and failure to eject errors. Revolvers do not have these problems. And no matter how good Glocks are, they cannot compensate for user error (like limp wristing).

Plus, snubbies look cool. What can I say, I am vain that way. :D

Thanks for your comment.
