Ditch MySpace, join MyOpera

, ,

My Opera community - blogs and photo sharingMySpace, owned by wingnut cheerleader Rupert Murdoch, recently deleted the largest online atheist group. Personally, I've never used nor signed-up for MySpace (or FaceBook for that matter), and this latest incident only makes me avoid the site even more.

I have an idea, why don't the 35,000 atheist bloggers in MySpace join MyOpera instead? MyOpera isn't just about blogging, you can post photos, create and join groups, chat in our forums, or just network with your friends. And since it's powered by the folks who makes the standards-compliant Opera Browser, you can use this website with virtually any modern browser. What's more, due to it's European roots, MyOpera will have no problem with nonbelief (they're in godless Scandinavia, after all).

What are you waiting for, fellow heathens? Join in!

California wildfires: disproportionate coverage?

,

One of the features in Opera that I like is the customizable sidebar/panel. It's easy to set-up new panel content providers, unlike in other browsers where you may need to install add-ons, and loads faster. With small screen rendering, you can basically add most sites to your panel. It is a nice complement to the built-in RSS reader for staying informed about the news.

My preferred news provider is BBC News, which is less sensationalist than my second news source, CNN. Today I noticed on my CNN panel on their coverage of the wildfires in California. On the Beeb it's a major story, but just one story, and they also tackle other major (and minor) stories from around the world. CNN, though, has pretty much become Wildfires News Network, with virtually all content in the panel center around it (click the image on the right). I know CNN is a US-based company, but I am using the International Edition, and I'd like to read more world events. It reminds me of the bridge that toppled in Minnesota a few months back. Too much coverage for a minor news story. I can see why people have tuned out of (cue scare quotes) "The Mainstream Media."

The events happening in California is a tragedy, but it's one among many in our troubled world. Let's keep things in perspective. While the fires rages on in Cali, killing two people and burning 1,200 homes and threatening more, more people are dying in global hotspots in the Middle East and Africa. We've had an explosion in a local shopping center here in Manila a few days back, killing about eleven people. I am reminded of the Katrina debacle, when after the devastation someone opined that Americans don't deserve to live in squalid conditions. I submit that no one, not just Americans, deserves it.

Of all things!

You would think that Opera would render an Opera Community blog the best, but when I checked my blog while logged off, the comment box is improperly placed! I checked it with IE 6 and Firefox, and they both turned out ok. It's only wrong with Opera (and OffByOne, but that doesn't count). Pretty disappointing. awww

Filehippo is teasing me

,

Filehippo claims they already have Opera 9.21 (not BETA) ready for download. Yet I don't see it in the Opera website or their download page. Is this for real? I don't like to download beta or trojan stuff and this seems too dubious for me. I think I can wait for the official release. :D

Opera Community gets a facelift

,

Opera Community has a fresh new look:

New Design

I like the new theme that I tried to use it for my blog. Unfortunately, the theme isn't meant for blogs, and it breaks a lot of stuff that I had to revert to my old theme. I hope someone could port that theme to work with blogs. :D

Opera on the go

,

Thanks to the Opera Mini birthday promo, I got my hands on a nice mobile phone strap. Unfortunately, my mobile carrier does not currently support Opera Mini. So, I decided to use the strap on my USB pendrive instead:

Powered by Opera

Yes, my pendrive is Opera-Powered too, thanks to Opera Portable. I hope this will come in handy when my wife and I go to Singapore and Bangkok next week! :D

Correction: My mobile carrier does support Opera Mini after all! Shortly after posting this entry, I downloaded the latest version (3.1) and installed it in my SonyEricsson K750i. Of course, it didn't work out-of-the-box. But with helpful tips from the Opera Mini site, and a whole lot of trial and error, I finally managed to get the darn thing online.

But I'll still keep the Opera strap tied to my pendrive. They look nice together.

Reasons to celebrate

, ,

Hooray, It's been one year since my first post here in Expletive Deleted. It's been great. And with my 200th post coming soon (this is post #194), my blog milestones keep on pouring. I'm also about a thousand visits short of 50,000 and my birthday's coming up in three weeks. And, last but definitely not least, my first child is on schedule for a late October birth. Let the good times roll. :hat:
