Comment Spam in My.Opera
Saturday, 29. April 2006, 00:48:32
Recently, I've been getting a lot of comment spam in my blog, about a dozen this week. Since I know that anonymous posters must confirm their comments through a verification system to prove that he/she isn't a robot, I checked to see if there's something amiss with this process. And boy, did I find a problem. Before, My.Opera uses a long random alphanumeric string for verification, now they use a simple binary question. Of course, this new system is easier to abuse. Whereas a random string would have millions of possible permutations, the new system would have only two (is a mouse an animal? yes or no). Any spammer could easily make a script that can give a random yes or no answer and have a 50% chance of success. With an easily abused system, no wonder I've been getting a lot of new comment spam.
Update: No sooner had I posted this, I've gotten two more spam comments. Because of this, I will reluctantly turn off anonymous comments in my blog until My.Opera fixes its verification system. They should never have changed the verification system to a simple yes-or-no question.
Update 2: Other My.Opera bloggers are also complaining about the surge of anonymous spammers. Vorlath, mariamagadalena, zenya, angel292005, zerog jonimueller, javaman and ricewood all have turned off comments (some just anonymous, other all comments) while musickna is cautiously allowing comments until it gets out of hand.

Answer the following trivial question so we can confirm that you are not a machine:
Do people think? Yes No
I chose No, it still posted.
Either the OC has a low opinion of it's viewers or... it isn't working.
(PS this only addresses the ANON posting issues, people registering and then putting their bots to work is another issue)

Many have registered just to leave me a comment of course good ones
I wish there was a way for Opera to stop this crap. it's time consuming for me to keep deleting and also horrible for others to see.
