The views expressed in this blog are my own and do not necessarily reflect the views of any former, current or future employers or employees of mine. I used to work at Opera Software.

internet explorer, microsoft, opera
After months of abuse, I decided to start clean today, and re-installed Windows Vista. Since I can't prevent the installation of Internet Explorer, I decided to give it a go. Millions of people use it every day, how bad can it be.
I figured I would take advantage of some of the "advantages" of not using Opera, and installed the Google Toolbar. I don't know if this is what caused my problems, or if these are actual bugs in IE, but after a while, I started having browser crashes. Since it doesn't save my tabs, I got frustrated. For some reason, there also were rendering bugs. Add to that the general impression of the browser being slow, there was really no other choice. Back to Opera.
For roughly an hour I endured Internet Explorer, and during that time it really managed to leave a bad impression. The only upside was that audio/video playback worked right out of the box. I hope my experience were due to bad luck, because on a clean install I would expect Internet Explorer to be rock stable.
At least it serves a reminder as to why I use Opera.

PS: Tried Firefox too, both the latest official and the nightly, but didn't like it.

google, opera, mail, gmail
...
Finally Google decided to let users access gMail with IMAP, which means you can work directly on the server instead of downloading and constantly syncing, as you had to with POP3. Using the latest beta (I'm courageous) of Opera, this works almost flawlessly. There are two things to look out for:
- Mail that exist in multiple IMAP folders somehow displays twice in your "Unread" folder
- You can't use filters to move things around in your IMAP folders
- The IMAP folders takes up a bit of space in your sidebar
Especially the second point is a bit annoying, because it either means you'll need to configure all filters on your gMail account, or manually move the mail around. Crossing my fingers for even better IMAP support!

opera, beta
I'm using Opera at my university, but they don't have 9.5 yet! I'm using the my.opera interface to view and edit my bookmarks, but it'd be so much easier if it would all just sync automagically. Hoping for a nice present this christmas...

opera
Last week I was attending a workshop, and brought my old laptop. Not much funky software installed, but it had Opera and OperaOffice. Despite this I found myself researching much faster than my companions, mainly because of the amount of tabs I kept open and the integrated mail client in Opera. After working together for a couple of days they were all using Opera!

stumbleupon, tagging game
Recently I've been tagged by both grafio and YtseJam. I don't really want to pass along the ball, but I apriciate the attention.
I've also recently been added to the my.opera
StumbleUpon team (be sure to check out the group), but I'm busy with not only my last weeks of work here at Opera, but also starting again at the University. So many things to keep track of.

public transport, oslo sporveier, norway cup
And so it has begun...
Norway Cup, the soccer tournament for kids in Norway and beyond. Everyone thinks it good PR to get their name associated with it, so Oslo Sporveier has kindly given
free use of public transportation to all participants.
That sounds great, except for that now I have to be in the same 'room' as 40 youngsters who thinks travelling by bus or tram is the greatest experience and it is extremely important to be
loud about it. My iPod is at maximum volume and I still can't hear it. Next year I'll buy a watergun and get some vengeance.

skinning, samurize, graphics

For those who are not familiar with it,
Samurize prints out system information in a Widget-ish form right on your desktop. Here's my config 'shinybar'. As with most Samurize configs you'll have to edit it to make it work on your system. I'm uploading the .psd file as well in case anyone wants to play with it for personal use.
shinybar.zipShinybar.psdPS: If it reminds anyone of
GKrellM, that's not purely a coincidence...
