Animated speed dial backgrounds

, , ,

A few weeks back I got this great animation from our movie master Christopher, the man behind many of our video clips. At first I was not sure what to do with it - I wanted to see it behind the speed dial, but our skinning engine does not support movie clips. However, it does support Animated PNGs. Previously I've been using a Firefox addon to make small PNGs, but it is very inefficient when dealing with many frames. I found something called PNG Assembler, which would do all the images in a batch. I scaled them down, changed them to greyscale and reduced the number of frames as much as I could, and the result is a nicely looping animation.

A word of caution though - the skin files are ~17MB.
While displaying this animation the CPU usage is a bit high.

Ooops! Uploaded correctly now. Not sure how to configure the server on my.opera to serve it as a skin. If I have time I'll try to figure it out on Monday.

I've just put that speed dial in my refined mac skin (for personal use only) and it's amazing...it makes opera use 80% of the cpu when looking at the speed dial, but it's simply gorgeous!
Another great example of what Opera can do that other browsers can't!

That's awesome cool

There's a small bug though, when it loses focus, the animation stops once you've come back. They work if you reload them.

I don't dare use this skin with 25 speed dials. Luckily I only use 9. I've flirted with 12 before but it's just too many to be useful - they become too hard to find, you may as well type the nickname into the address bar.

Wow, that looks really impressive!

If you have some free time, can you update the skin to the latest 11.01 changes (which are looking nice btw.)?
