The exciting life of a UI designer

The dropdown button

, ,

As part of our Featherweight process we streamlined the user interface. We noticed that, for some users the change to the drop-down menu button was undesirable. Luckily, as many of you know Opera is a highly customizable browser—you can easily add the drop-down back as a custom button.

Click this link to install the button, then drag it to a toolbar of your choice:

This adds a bulky spyglass icon outside the address bar. We're merely looking for the normal, considerably smaller dropdown arrow within it.

BTW, if you're looking to conserve space, then why not do away with the completely useless widget icon in the address bar?

Henrik HelmersHelmers Friday, June 24, 2011 6:21:40 PM

Changed the "spyglass" to refer to a history icon instead.

There was no need to remove the button. This is a big mistake in terms of user interface. The user must now do more action to see the previously typed addresses. And to switch from mouse to keyboard.

The new design I like, but we need to test UI.

But you can't return the button back in the address field... why not implement the option of being able to drag/remove buttons in the right portion of the address field instead? smile

Could also solve the issue of the missing bookmarks star, for which the button and action already exist, it's just impossible to place the button in its proper place, the address field.

Just food for thought

Updated the text string to be more accurate.

I totally agree!!! Please readd that tiny button before Opera 11.5 final will be out!

Instead if you want to conserve space why don't integrate (properly, with a graphic search engine selector) the searchbox in the adressfield?

MilstonmiLston Saturday, June 25, 2011 9:24:18 PM

Bring back the button, as it was! Why should I now disfigure interface which is a button, when everything was normal?
That's why it was necessary to remove the button from the address bar? than it is to simplify the interface? I do not understand! please answer.

"first simplify the interface? and immediately offer buttons spoil interface?"
Do not you think it's absurd?

Tell the developers to put the drop down button/arrow back in the address bar where it belongs and stop breaking/changing things that have nothing wrong with them.

i like a very minimal interface for opera, as such i already find it a bit annoying to have extension buttons up on the bar even though they provide desired functionality, but to have to add a button to replace what is now understood to be a part of the core and basic functionality of a browser is absurd, especially when no one was complaining about it being there in the first place.

PUT IT BACK!

Opera started the search-engine-in-address bar thing. Type g 'ook' and it'll search Google for 'ook'. Without a keyword Opera uses your default search engine to search. You can go to preferences -> search and customize your searches for searching in the address bar. After that, you can remove the search input box from the address bar yourself. Sign up for Opera Link, and you can share your custom searches with all your Opera installs.

At first I was surprised, but then I realized I never pressed the arrow anyway. For those who do miss it I'd suggest being more respectful. You can provide criticism without being ugly about it.

Yes I know, but this is not the same of a "graphic switcher"... however this is not the place to discuss about it smile

What we want here is to put that button back in its place (if the UI team really want remove it at least give us a simple option in the preferences)

EmanueleEngelium Sunday, June 26, 2011 2:09:34 PM

Thanks a lot for the option in opera:config smile

Really? And your expertise in UI design and usability comes from..?

Not really. If you don't mind the additional clutter, why would you mind a slightly different icon? It's still the same amount of visual clutter.

Who are you to make such claims and demands, exactly?

+1. I can't believe I wasted 5 minutes of my life chasing after the inane kluge that meant I could get a tiny dropdown button (or near facsimile) back.

OT to Chris(Slamdex): try listening to comments and understand where they're coming from, instead of mounting ad hominem attacks.

Please replace this drop down button by default — the forum is filling up with comments asking where its gone. Let those who don't want it change the option to remove it.

иsᴀɴᴇStahn Sunday, July 10, 2011 9:54:49 AM

I don't ever use the button, but since it's so small, I prefer it back so it would satisfy the users. Seems like a smart choice.

Henrik HelmersHelmers Friday, July 15, 2011 8:56:25 PM

I see there's been quite a few comments! Opera has a history of being very responsive with regards to user feedback. I agree in principle that it is very good practice to listen to your customers.

One thing that we keep in mind is the balance between pleasing a dedicated user base (consisting of quite a few power users) on one hand, and creating a product without too many exotic behaviors and UI elements on the other. My take on this is that having two separate drop-downs from the same input element is not good.

Sam Gsamwichse Saturday, October 1, 2011 10:46:22 PM

In opera:config , type "dropdown" in quick search and toggle "Dropdown Button In Addressfield" on.

It's under the "User Prefs" heading.

I don't know why he couldn't tell all the people here begging for this info that.
