Good art is not what it looks like, but what it does to us.

Masterpieces of the Prado Museum in Google Earth

, , , ...

The Prado Museum in Madrid has been the first art museum to have a series of masterpieces online, available for people to zoom in and enjoy while sitting at home.

The most popular paintings in the Prado Museum can be seen online in almost microscopic detail:
The Crucifixion, Juan de Flandes
Gentleman with his Hand on his Breast, El Greco
The Family of Philip IV or Las Meninas, Velázquez
Jacob’s Dream, Ribera
The 3rd of May, Goya
The Annunciation, Fra Angelico
The Cardinal, Raphael
The Emperor Charles V at Mühlberg, Titian
The Immaculate Conception, Tiepolo
The Descent from the Cross, Rogier van der Weyden
The Garden of Earthly Delights, Hieronymous Bosch
The Three Graces, Rubens
Self-portrait, Dürer
Artemisia, Rembrandt

It´s wonderful how you can zoom in and capture every small brushstroke. This could also be useful for future restoration works on these paintings.
In the case of Hieronymus Bosch's 16th-century triptych “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, this is probably the only way to see every single detail in the painting.

It would be great for every museum in the world to have its entire art collection in Google Earth, although nothing can compare to the experience of walking around the halls in the actual museum.

To see the masterpieces you must have first installed Google Earth, which can be downloaded from the Google website. The pictures can be found in the preview section of the geographic web part of the layers menu of Google Earth.

Here´s the making off video (very interesting!):

Social architecture

, , , ...

This is an interesting social project: The Micro-coasts situated in Vinaroz, in the Mediterranean coast, between Valencia and Barcelona. This rocky part of the coast has been completely transformed with this new project by Guallart Architects, turning it into a social space. A beautiful place to sit and relax looking at the sea, read a book, or take a nap...

United Nations´ new ceiling.

, , , ...

I wasn´t going to write a post about this particular matter, but after all the fuss created by Miquel Barcelo´s work for the Human Rights Council Conference Room Ceiling, I think I should express my opinion too. For those of you not familiar with the matter, there´s been a huge fuss because our government and the United Nations have paid a huge amount of money to this man (who´s one of my favourite artists) so that he would decorate the ceiling of this conference room.

Of course, we all believe that they should have spent this money feeding the poor, or something concerning "Human Rights", but I don´t want to discuss that any more (it makes me so mad!)... we all agree on that.

But what also makes me mad is the artistic part of the problem: the ceiling is a horrible piece of art, a joke... How can someone spend nine months creating something so "empty", so simple-minded. Barcelo is a very spiritual person/artist, and his work always captures that.
And two weeks after finishing it, some parts are falling off... great job!!!!!

Beautiful housing project.

, , , ...

Here is a beautiful and inspiring project winner of a housing competition in Madrid. Designed by J.A.C. y Asociados, Arquitectura.
Simple, imaginative, modern, fun... and a very interesting use of colour and material in architecture.
I would love to live in one of these flats!!!!
There´s lots of very interesting projects in their web site.

More ideas for etching project

, , , ...

I´ve been drawing some more hands as preparation for an etching on wood or linoleum.

I like the idea of "burning hands"... I´m just trying to show how hands can express feelings or thoughts, and this idea of a hand stretching out because of the heat has been wandering around my head for some time... Also, I think the way the outline of the hand is "broken" into small flames is interesting, when usually the normal outline of a hand is so smooth and continuous.

I want the background, on the contrary, to be simple, geometric and portray continuity...

I´ll probably use linoleum for this one.

Simplicity...

SIMPLICITY:
1. The property, condition, or quality of being simple or uncombined.
2. Absence of luxury or showiness; plainness.
3. Absence of affectation or pretense.
4. Lack of sophistication or subtlety; naiveté. Lack of good sense or intelligence; foolishness.
5. Clarity of expression. Austerity in embellishment.

Just wondering about simplicity...
...what an extraordinary word...

Brilliant idea!!!!

This is the winner of the Company Implementation ED Award 2008...

I love the way they used the product they were designing for, in this case wine, to create the corporate identity of VINSEUM (a wine museum in Cataluña). First, they designed the corporate font using some letter templates and pouring wine. And then they designed brochures, the bottle label, signs...

It´s brilliant, simple, and different. Bravo for the designers from Estudio Diego Feijóo!!!

Sign for hotel in Madrid

, , , ...

This is a neon sign design I made for a hotel in Madrid... The hotel is situated in a small and quiet street and no one could really see it was there. I tried to make it simple, modern and attractive because the building is quite horrible (a big grey block).

I think it looks pretty good, doesn´t it?

Play it by trust...

, , , ...

This is a very interesting creation by Yoko Ono, the all white chess, a paradox really... The players are supposed to move the different pieces without thinking about a strategy, until they don´t really know which pieces are their own, and which are their opponents´. There´s no winner, and no loser.

Interesting way to lose conscience and just concentrate on "feelings", communication, experimentation and intuition.

Many of her art pieces are instructions for performances, some performed by the artist and others can only be performed by the audience, believing like Marcel Duchamp that the work of art is only partly created by the artist and is completed by the spectator.
