Good art is not what it looks like, but what it does to us.

Google´s homage to Velazquez

, , , ...

Google´s logo has been altered today to celebrate Velazquez´s birthday, 409 years ago. They´ve chosen his masterpiece "Las Meninas" for this special occasion. If you haven´t seen this painting in The Prado Museum, I specially advise you to do so...it´s a very impressive and complex painting.

I find this idea of altering the logo for a special date is really interesting, and if I see a new picture when I´m using Google, I like finding out what it means and the reason why it´s there.
It´s a great way of advertising it´s own search engine.

Guerrilla marketing Campaign

,

Touche! PHD, Canada´s pioneering media agency, created a very original and unusual guerrilla marketing campaign for Quebec's Federation of Milk Producers.

To increase the sales, they put milk cartons in all the refrigerators in several Brault & Martineau furniture stores and showrooms.

The campaign creates a surprising effect in customers, as it isn´t a traditional media channel. This new medium allows a natural exposure of the product, and it´s easy, direct and brilliant!

Quote by Miró

In a picture, it should be possible to discover new things every time you see it. But you can look at a picture for a week together and never think of it again. You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life.

Exhibition Magdalena Abakanowicz

, , , ...

If any of you live or are visiting Madrid before the 16th June, I recommend a very interesting exhibition: King Arthur’s Court, by the Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz.

The exhibition takes place at the Cristal Palace in Retiro Park, a beautiful small iron and glass construction from 1887, which used to be a greenhouse. Abakanowicz´s imaginary and theatrical world looks perfect inside this transparent volume.

The space is filled with monumental steel figures representing the legendary characters of King Arthur’s Court (Merlin, Parsifal, Lancelot...), body fragments, trees, seeds and "bambini" (figures half human half tree). All these covered with a huge white canvas.

The different figures that stand in this same space reveal the tension between the individual and the social, identity and anonymity, desire and reality.

If you manage to visit the exhibition on a sunny day it´s definitely far more interesting, because you´ll be able to see, not only the figures, but the shadows these figures and the structure of the building cast on the canvas. It´s a very impressive installation... Hope you like it!!!!

Emilio Ruiz del Rio, special effects wizard.

, , , ...

The main reason why I studied Art and finally ended working as a graphic designer was the influence my grandfather´s life and work had on me.

You probably have never heard his name before, but I´m sure you know his work. There´s a few "Wows" in his professional life: Stanley Kubrick, David Lean, Stephen King, John Milius, Elia Kazan, David Lynch...

He worked as a set decorator, and was responsible for many of the visual, special effects and miniatures on more than 600 films all over the world. His work can be seen in films like Doctor Zhivago (David Lean), Conan The Barbarian (John Milius), Conan The Destroyer (Richard Fleischer), Dune (David Lynch), The Fall of the Roman Empire (Anthony Mann), Spartakus (Stanley Kubrick), Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean), Pan´s Labyrinth (Guillermo del Toro) and many more.

He was known as the special effects wizard, because he had a special talent creating all kinds of visual effects to deceive the camera. His imagination was enviable, and he invented new effects and techniques which are currently used in films around the world.

He loved his job, and he enjoyed the challenge every new film involved. My grandfather was a great inspiration for everyone who knew him. He continued working until his death last year.

Here are somes photos of his miniature models in Conan The Destructor, Dune, Red Sonja and Pan´s Labyrinth.

These pictures are from his personal collection. If you want to check out more information or photos please go to his web site. (Sorry, only in Spanish!)
There´s also an interesting site with info and photos from the film Dune.

This is just the beginning...

Welcome to my new blog. My name is Henar, and I´m a professional graphic designer.

I´ve loved everything to do with Art as long as I can remember. I´ve spent hours in front of a canvas or a piece of paper trying to create something or other. For a couple of years I´ve been working as a graphic designer. It´s been my passion for so long, that I would now like to share it with you.

So, I expect this blog will have bits of everything I consider "Art", including Architecture, Poetry, Literature or Music and, of course, Design...in fact, everything I´m interested in.

So, this is just the beginning...
