MEMBER OF THE WEEK!!!!!!

Friday, 6. November 2009, 14:22:42

We appreciate good design, but sometimes content is king, and this blog is one of our favorites. We love how she highlight designers and artists she find interesting!
Although she spend a lot of time reporting on other people's work, she also sparks off interesting discussions. Like her Picasso story proved.
Her posts are mostly about design, but she also knows a thing or two, as her design portfolio proves!
Put your hands together for our Spanish graphic designer Henar!

I really didn't expect this when I logged in on saturday. It was very early, and I was exhausted after a really long sleepless night working on a presentation. I looked at the screen, trying to focus, and what do I discover? I´M MEMBER OF THE WEEK!!!!

Thanks to all the people at my.opera that wanted to make me MOTW! I hope a lot of members will visit my pages and hopefully find something interesting enough.

I want to thank everyone that wrote all those nice messages, you are all so kind! Thanks to this, I´m meeting a lot of great people. I especially loved the comment by Hovsep Avedissian, mentioning my Picasso post:
Hi To which Picasso responded, “Madame, it took me my entire life.”
And here you go as the member of the week congrats for all entire life.

THANKS SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH EVERYONE!!!!! I´ll try to keep up the good work!!!!

Going up... or down.

Interesting stairs designed by Gabriella Gustafson & Mattias Ståhlbom.
Nice looking and different, but... don´t they seem a little bit difficult to climb?

More designs by them in TAF Arkitektkontor´s web site.

These other stairs are absolutely FANTASTIC!!!!!! I´d give anything to have stairs like these at home!!!!!

Designed by Petr Hájek, Tomáš Hradečný, Jan Šépka, cooperation Jan Kolář, Martin Maršík, from the architectural and design office HŠH architekti.

Although I would be happy enough with these too:

I love the way the light comes through! The author is Jan Šépka, from HŠH architekti too.

"It couldn't have taken you more than 10 minutes to design that"...

, , , ...

I hate it when clients look at a logo, painting or any other form of art a designer created and not very delicately say: "It couldn't have taken you more than 10 minutes to design that"... or "Even a child could have done that". Here´s a story for all of them...

Legend has it that Pablo Picasso was sketching in the park when a woman approached him.

“It’s you — Picasso, the great artist! Oh, you must sketch my portrait! I insist.”

So Picasso agreed to sketch her. After studying her for a moment, he used a single pencil stroke to create her portrait. He handed the woman his work of art.

“It’s perfect!” she gushed. “You managed to capture my essence with one stroke, in one moment. Thank you! How much do I owe you?”

“Five thousand dollars,” the artist replied.

“B-b-but, what?” the woman sputtered. “How could you want so much money for this picture? It only took you a second to draw it!”

To which Picasso responded, “Madame, it took me my entire life.”

The essence of a company.

, , , ...

I find this Mac/PC commercial very interesting, the way the two men personify the essence of their respective brands and bring it to life in the way they speak and act, and their appearance. It´s a very intelligent way to present the differences between these products, and convince the consumer that we´re not dealing with “machines” or technology, but with something much more important, which is the essence of the brand, its personality, its heart and soul.

I believe a designer should be aware of this while designing a corporate identity for a company, comparing the identity as a brand and essence as a company to an individual’s personality. Doing this simple exercise companies would avoid having logos or identities which, sometimes, clearly don´t represent the personality of the company, its ambitions and how it sees itself.

Design is...

"To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit; it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse".

Paul Rand.

Random is fun!

, , , ...

Create your own book cover following these simple instructions:

Go to "Wikipedia." Hit "random" or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your book.

Go to "Random quotations" or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very first quote of the page is the title of your book.

Go to Flickr and click on "explore the last seven days" or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
The second picture will be your book cover.

Use Photoshop or similar to put it all together.
Fun, isn´t it?

Here´s mine:

Simplicity...

, , , ...

SIMPLICITY:
1. The property, condition, or quality of being simple or uncombined.
2. Absence of luxury or showiness; plainness.
3. Absence of affectation or pretense.
4. Lack of sophistication or subtlety; naiveté. Lack of good sense or intelligence; foolishness.
5. Clarity of expression. Austerity in embellishment.

(Dictionary Thesaurus)

Just wondering about simplicity...
...what an extraordinary word...

Brilliant idea!!!!

This is the winner of the Company Implementation ED Award 2008...

I love the way they used the product they were designing for, in this case wine, to create the corporate identity of VINSEUM (a wine museum in Cataluña). First, they designed the corporate font using some letter templates and pouring wine. And then they designed brochures, the bottle label, signs...

It´s brilliant, simple, and different. Bravo for the designers from Estudio Diego Feijóo!!!

Sign for hotel in Madrid

, , , ...

This is a neon sign design I made for a hotel in Madrid... The hotel is situated in a small and quiet street and no one could really see it was there. I tried to make it simple, modern and attractive because the building is quite horrible (a big grey block).

I think it looks pretty good, doesn´t it?
