If Only I Were As Cool As My Dogs Think I am!

Welcome To My Somewhat Coherent Babbling

He IS Just Like Me

,

Hermit has always teased me saying that Magnus acts just like me. Well, Magnus has confirmed that. It seems he is going to have a chronic illness. Remember a few weeks ago when he was sick? He's been off meds now for over 2 weeks and seems to be feeling bad so I took him back to my vet and she confirmed what I already thought. The Echilicia is still around. :frown: So he will need to be on antibiotics and vitamins for 3 months. He has also been given a high calorie dog food to help him gain 1.5 lbs, he's gotta get up to 16lbs.

He will be ok as long as I stay on top of realizing when he needs to go back on antibiotics. Some dogs have to do "pulses". This is where they must go on and off meds throughout the year.

Feel better puppers!

3 months?! I hope that will cure him for sure. How old is Magnus?

Gavin Sheedy 29. September 2009, 13:13

That sucks. No whiskey for him, either :frown:

Hermitess 29. September 2009, 13:57

Sarah Magnus is 7 years old. JRT's usually live about 14-15 years, so he's got quite a few years left. I hope it does cure him! That may be why she's putting him on the antibiotics for so long. She says he's really healthy with the exception of that (she tested his kidneys and other things)

Hermitess 29. September 2009, 14:01

I should have added that the Echilicia (not sure this is how it's spelled) is caused by a tick. It's not contagious to other dogs so Bella will not have a chance of getting it. It kills the red blood cells, making him very anemic and if left untreated, it will begin shutting down organs until the animal is dead. But with medication it can be kept under control and the animal can live a normal life.

LOL@Gavin, nope, seems Mags will have to kick that nasty whiskey habit

I think you have stated that before, but I didn't remember, sorry! That's great that he is otherwise healthy.

Hermitess 29. September 2009, 14:15

I did Sarah, but there are a couple new friends coming to my blog so I put that bit about what the illness is mostly for them.

:sst: and for those who, like me, have no short term memory!

Whassit Tooh-Ya 29. September 2009, 14:24

Oh wow that's really bad! All from a stupid tick! :frown:

Hermitess 29. September 2009, 14:25

Isn't it? :eyes: And I put Frontline on him too! (that's a once a month drop you put on them to keep off fleas and ticks, works really well)

Whassit Tooh-Ya 29. September 2009, 16:37

We have Frontline here too. Actually, a tick managed to get in Whiskey's (my grandmother's cat) ear and she uses Frontline too :irked:

Adele 29. September 2009, 17:54

Eh, that's sad. But at least it can be kept under control.

I think Frontline kills the ticks, but doesn't stop them biting in the first place.

Kittylicious 29. September 2009, 20:10

I really hope that the antibiotics will help him so he can feel better really soon! But three months is a long period of time to be on them, isn't it?

Hermitess 30. September 2009, 06:03

Kimmie a tick in the ear would hurt! Poor Whiskey! :frown:

Does it Adele? I never see fleas or ticks on them. *shrugs*

Me too Zaphira. I'm not sure if that is long or not. Dr.Vet says each dog is different, we just have to figure him out. On the up side he is liking the wet dog food high calorie supplement he's eating with his dry food to gain weight.

Norfrid 30. September 2009, 07:18

Poor Magnus! I hope he will get well and that all those antibiotics won't give him additional problems. I've chosen not to put Frontline on my dogs, but I've found a few ticks on them this summer. I just take it off as soon as I find one. I guess I'm afraid that Frontline can cause disease too.

r♡se 30. September 2009, 19:01

Good that you went back to the vet! Good thoughts streaming from here to Magnus. And to you, of course!

Hermitess 30. September 2009, 19:07

ugh I know norfrid. But if I don't give them he'll die. :frown: It's terrible that the one that heals one illness may cause another. So frustrating!

Thank you so much Rose

Norfrid 1. October 2009, 06:57

Terriers are made of tough stuff. I'm sure Magnus will come through this.

Hermitess 1. October 2009, 13:51

You are right about that! Getting kicked in the head by a horse didn't faze him, so this probably won't either. He initiated play this morning with Bella and they are really going hard at it! He must be feeling better!! It was great to see. I'm glad. :D
