Americans LOVE candy!
I always wondered if Halloween in America is really how it is portrayed in the movies ?? with everyone dressing up and running the streets on a sugar rush and throwing toilet paper in trees. Like in Hocus Pocus. Minus the whole sucking childrens souls out thing.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 7:41:20 AM

It's like that in Ireland, minus the toilet roll and plus bonfires. Enjoy Guy Fawkes!

Mrs. HermitessHermitess Wednesday, October 28, 2009 10:59:56 AM

LOL Lucy! The littler kids do dress up and go all around to the houses getting candy. Usually it's the trouble making teens who throw toilet paper, although it does happen. So, pretty much I suppose. Our city had a Halloween carnival last night. I don't celebrate this holiday anymore, except for taking advantage of all the large bags of candies in the stores. p

Gavin, I was wondering if Halloween is done anywhere else but the US. I know in Mexico they have a similar holiday called All Saints Day, Day of the Dead or something like that. I can't remember now.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 11:28:43 AM

Halloween is supposed to have started in Ireland, it's an old pagan festival, and it was supposed to be the day when the the border between the dead and living was weakest. Kids love it, but it's a bad night to leave anything flamable around, and a busy night for the fire brigade.

Lin, There are several isles in our local WalMarts dedicated to the candy and dressing up. I should go take pics. *rubs hands in evil fashion* and share how pathetic retailers are. bigsmile

lol

I mean...a homemade costume is sooo much easier and cheaper. I did buy my 9 year old her bunny ears, tail and bow tie, though. Still trying to figure out the rest of it...p

ShallowMuse Wednesday, October 28, 2009 2:04:32 PM

Yea it is Day of the Dead in Mexico.. wahoo celebratin' the dead! fun times.
just another holiday to make money, i think!

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 2:06:42 PM

It's a holiday that people make money out of, but it's oooooold. smile

Mrs. HermitessHermitess Wednesday, October 28, 2009 2:35:18 PM

I didn't realize it came from Ireland, I'd only heard of the Mexican holiday. Prolly because it's so near to us.

LOL@Sarah, yes there are costumes and things, but I was thinking of the long grocery isles.

I agree Bianca, here it is just fun, dressing up, and candy. No mention of remembering the dead.

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, October 28, 2009 3:24:36 PM

I can't decide whether to dress up like a cat or a ninja ... lol

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 3:42:14 PM

Maybe I'll give them what they're always looking for and go to work as a leprechaun. And then steal their lunches.

Lulixxylu Wednesday, October 28, 2009 4:38:10 PM

The only thing i can say in a proper Irish accent is "i'm a little leprechaun".

I want to see Gavin as a leprechaun! yes

And i vote NinjaCat!!

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 4:40:11 PM

I'd like to see you saying "I'm a little leprechaun". p

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, October 28, 2009 5:50:03 PM

Ninjacat it'll be then!

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 5:51:49 PM

Guess I'll be a burka wearing leprechaun then. bigsmile (That should go down well in the rascist-voting area I live in cheers).

ShallowMuse Wednesday, October 28, 2009 5:54:38 PM

lol !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gavin, you just keep taking it a step further EVERY TIME!

Lulixxylu Wednesday, October 28, 2009 6:33:58 PM

I think someone really wants a burka for christmas...

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 7:00:16 PM

I'm dreaming of a burka for Christmas,
and maybe a leprechaun to go...

KittyliciousZaphira Wednesday, October 28, 2009 7:02:07 PM

ShallowMuse Wednesday, October 28, 2009 7:52:01 PM

and I was the one on drugs??! oooookay! bigeyes

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Wednesday, October 28, 2009 8:52:29 PM

How else would you explain all of this, B.? bigsmile "Oh, yeah I have one friend who's a leprechaun in a burka, and the others are all dressed in P.V.C. catsuits with beer pockets. Henry says that his employers are looking at him funny." "Yes Bianca, now take another pill at have another relaxing design brainstorm." smile

Lulixxylu Wednesday, October 28, 2009 9:06:43 PM

You're saying i'm just part of her drug-induced hallucination?
That does explain a lot actually.

Gavin Tripp-Sheedygarlingmatthews Thursday, October 29, 2009 5:43:54 AM

lol I'm pretty sure I had a comment about sweet tarts, but it's lost after reading these comments.

I wish we'd had Halloween celebrations here when I was young. I think it looks fun bigsmile.

Mrs. HermitessHermitess Friday, October 30, 2009 8:50:08 PM

Rose it is great fun for the kids. My friend's son won a costume contest this year, went to the Halloween Carnival, AND got to trick or treat! She said people were giving him handfuls of candy. lol
