Welcome to Emilia's 2008

(X)Ubuntu,Savior for old device.

Seems I 've been little craving for linux system these days. This is the second time I'm writing here about linux OS in a month.
No lies,I do really do what I declared above and really really love to using it far emore then using windows.
Just before few months,I had so ethusism for Vista and did it on the same machine.
Whatever,Vista working suck on my non-vista capable old machine.I swap all 60GB hd for Ubuntu.Functionally survived but one thing annoying me a lot,the ethernet pppoe connection is poor. As I check to find if any solution to boost it a post shows it because Ubuntu has bugs in dhpc client. Ether0(default adsl/dsl connection device) can't work well with an auto dhcp by the file"usr/etc/network/interface".
In Ubuntu, the command line "sudo pppoeconf" will progress a dsl connection and you have to do it every login.
In reverse,Xubuntu play a excellent work on that.It works automatically and fast none lost of datas. No matter,Xubuntu like other derivated dist. based from Ubuntu they are poor at installing wirless card. My HP no exception has a standard Broadcom 802.11g 54g card.Luckily, the ndiwrapper list has some info about how to install the driver. Not too difficult...after 30 minutes,it has been done and working well. Choose one of network monitor then everything get to shuttle.

To be continue... ...

Hello Amy,
I'm glad you are happy with Linux.
For my old notebook I will use Xubuntu, too. Because the performance of XFCE Desktop is is better than Gnome on Ubuntu.
(But at the moment I'm too busy for it...)
Hmmm I don't have problems with the dhpc client. It works very good here.
Hope to read more about in future. Take care and a happy new year!

Best wishes,
Heiko

Hi guys! Finally got back here it was terrible by the earthquake in Taiwan.

So far I could not connect to some sites due to a down connection.I guess you may heard about this news on tv or somewhere else.

Welcome back,Elmar!

It has been long not heard from you and I've also not been here often.
You may give it a try,the X-Ubuntu that makes a old machine run fast and a dual-core processored computer flies.

Nice to see you here again!
Amy

Hello Heiko,

Thanks for your guidence and tips about all Linux things.I really really love it and got fun with.

My feelings are:
I don't wanna back to Windows after I log into Linux enviroment and just stay there and lasting longer as much as possible. If in windows,I just try to finish things I have to do with Win and get back to Linux A.S.A.P.

Hope Bill may not killing me since Vista is going to lined in market.
:D

Take Care,
Amy

Well I don`t wanna switch back to Windows, too. So Bill lost two customers now. I hope when I buy a laptop in future I can buy it without Vista. :D

Your new CSS design is very very beautiful! Great work!

Heiko

Linux Ubuntu is really a inpiretory system which could make you think beyond something...thank you again for the initial guidence!

Hmmm, I've tried Linux in various guises but I reach the head banging against a wall point quite quickly. Basically, too many things just don't work properly (like sound on my laptop, wi-fi etc) that I can't be bothered fighting with it.

However, I do believe that Linux is improving to an extent where it will be like Windows in that it just works straight away. I think the problems of package dependencies could be made better too.

I do have respect for those of you who know their way around Linux though so

I have not had any problems with pppoeconf on Ubuntu. In my case I had to confirm all the choises there except the last one, couse I didn't want to start my connection during the boot automaticaly. After that I have made a button on my panel to start the connection (right click on panel and chose the option to add your own button, right up of the window; there choce: "aplication in terminal" and type: pon dsl-provider, if you use dsl). But you cann use also the GkDial toll to configurate your connection. It is standart tool wich you cann easily install over menu "Application".
