Hipster Girl's Thoughts on her Favorite Thing Ever...MUSIC

Non Music Ness....Food for Thought (you thoughts actually)

CHECK IT BETCHES
Kay, so this really has nothing to do with music, (or the fact I never really blog) but there is a site I want you all to know about.

Freerice.com is an uber groovy not so little anymore sit that donates rice through the power of vocabulary. Here's the deal, every time you get a vocab word right, you donate twenty grains of rice to hungry peoples. Also, the more rice you donate/vocab. words you get correct, the harder the words get.
It is a great way to learn some new words and help others out. Plus, it's rice, so no animal killing or sweatshops involved. (at least I hope not) The site has tons of settings to play around with, and you can see right where your vocab-rice is going. I think it's really cool, so even if you don't play send it to a few people. In my experience moms love it. Anyway, it can't hurt any, just help.

You may not think it adds up to anything but check out the donations since it's opening last October.

The Wombats: Scores an 8...NotSoSecret Liverpool Loves

Check it...
The Wombats may not be so new, but I feel the need to share my feeling of copious love for them.
With loveable accents, obnoxiously cute lyrics, and catchy beats, The Wombats make you want to dance to joy division; no to celebrate the irony though. Although all of their songs sound kinda the same(with varried spazmodic inserted jam sessions), the lyrics are great fun. With titles like: Patrica the Stripper, Let's Dance to Joy Division, and Die Hard Movie Girl, how could you not love them?
I really can't go too deeply into this band, there really isn't too much there. They reminde me a bit of Vampire Weekend, but not really. They have fun catchy music that doesn't make you want to ask the DJ to play Joy Division, and they are even good enough to be in the top 20's. So, let the lve tar us apart, i've found the cure to a broken heart...The Wombats.

The Maine: Scores a 6...Pretty Slick for Mainstream

, , , ...

CHECK IT
Okay, so I heard of The Maine about around this Christmas, and I immediately liked them. (a.k.a The dudes are pretty sick.:D)Although they are nothing radically new or ground breaking different, they have a truly addicting sound. My favorite of their songs was originally If I Only Had The Heart, but now I really can't decide. The lead singer has the 'classic emo voice' but it works for the band. Their music is almost too well put together, and could possible benefit from a more edgy feel, but it fits in with their lyrics.
Nothing goes to extreme with The Maine. They are a bit emo and a bit more mainstream. However, they are catchy, very catchy,(catchy enough to score some sets on at Warp Tour), and I am surprised that it has taken close to four years for me to find this band. The music is fun to dance to, and it doesn't make you think too much, which is fun once in awhile.
The Maine also boasts what is, in my mind, one pretty spectacular cover. It's not very easy to find a good cover of something. I don't like covers that try too hard to imitate the real song. On the flipside, I also don't like covers that totally remaster the song. The Maine covers Akon's I Wanna Love You, and tricky feat for an 'Indie / Alternative / Rock' band. Although I never really liked the original song, the monotone and studio perfect music of The Maine makes it some how very likeable.
Anyway, over all The Maine is a great band to enjoy, but I wouldn't take them too seriously. Their CD is one that you can listen to the whole thing; every song has something to offer. Listen to their words of advice on staying up and getting down, but 'seduction leads to destruction' is about as deep as they get. However, do take them seriously in he fact they will most likely get big, or at least bigish. I know, 'duh HG, of course they are going to get at least bigish, they are all ready playing some of Warp Tour', but I had to say it anyway. In the end, on a score of tom petty to Violent Femmes (0-10/Hate to Love) I give them a 6. They are fun, yet just so painfully mainstream fake; in the end I can't help but like them. As always, sorry for grammar and logic that fails life. Als as always, please comment, yell at me, confess your undying love, threaten to kill me, or even give me your 101 reasons why tom petty is amazing. I don't write this for myself, I would be a pretty sad person if I did that. On the contrairy, I write this because I am bored, and music is my little indie hipster chick life.
