What's torTor is a system which claims to enable its users to communicate anonymously on the Internet, in my case, I use it to bypass the GFW(
Golden Shield Project) to access the blocked website. It's better to use it with a firefox extention"
Torbutton".
2.
What's the situationNow with the uprise of the incidents in west China, the authorities has just blocked twitter, blogger, and many other websites including this one(here is a
list) . However people can find ways anyway. The blocked site are mostly foreign websites where people can express their ideas their own way, blogs and bbs.
3.
So what?As far as I am concerned, that's a fact I can live with, for most Chinese people, there are similar websites for them like "xiaonei" for facebook, "jiwai" for twitter, and many more. Of couse, sensitive words are banned or deleted by the websites. For a long time, the situation will not get any better.
The ciminals used bbs and instant message software to make plans for the violence in west China, so the government may strengthen the censorship of Internet.

When introducing someone, the Chinese tend to introduce his title or profession first, his being a professor, a manager, or a official. The westerners tend to explain what they are doing when meeting people, focusing on the specific matters.
This explains the difference between "being" and "doing".
Chinese people care much about qualitative things, who people are--their quality, temperament, their social class, speak louder than what they are doing. When it goes to specific matters, Chinese like to focus on what they are rather than what they can do. This comes from the traditional Chinese “正名” thinking--Rectifying names or telling what things really are.
This also influence the way people write articles: the Chinese articles are always found in a general, nonobjective way, which focus on the general correctness rather than specific matters. So it's kinda like: Chinese articles are always talking big, streching long statements without a specific example.
That's why my TOEFL writting teacher always shouts--"SPECIFC, SPECIFC, SPECIFIC!!!!".

The chart below may show some basic differences:
- West / East
- One God / Many gods
- All powerful / Limited power
- One truth / Many truths
In China, there is actually never be a God that people believe. There are many philosophy genres that tried to explain the truth of life and universe, most of them rose during the warring states period, including the famous "Confucianism". Buddhism and Taoism(a indigenous religion that calls for harmonious relationship between people and that between people & nature) are also popular, each has its own "God".
In fact, the vast majority never believe that there are a God with human spirit. The philosophers believe that through self self-discipline, self-improvement and a whole system of society philosophy, people will finally get to a civilization stage. So even there is a God, he can never influence people's lives.

I found this tip on lonely planet's website, a travel guide provider:
Guidebooks Confiscated
Travellers entering China by road or rail across the southeastern border, particularly the Vietnamese frontier, report that Lonely Planet China guidebooks have been confiscated by border officials. This is due to sensitivity regarding maps of China that do not include Taiwan. Travellers should consider putting a cover on the book to make it less recognisable and just to be safe, copy down any crucial details you might need while in the country.
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/asia/chinaThe mainland people sure are sensitive towards Taiwan issues, but the tips shown above are really amusing.

WOW

The Burning Crusade(TBC) comes at last. From today on, the 9th city begins updating the hardware of every WOW sever. Finally, TBC has made its way into China. It will be available before June.
By that time, there will be a storm among the AFKs, including me. I'm not sure, though.

I heard the recent murders happened on Virginia Tech campus, worst in history.
I feel sorry for those who lost their loved ones.
But I'd like to focus on the reactions rather than the action itself.
After the disaster, the whole Asian society felt uneasy, they feared that the public would hold opinions against them--some began analysing their "faults" immediately. When it sounded like a Chinese did that, they feel ashamed, for what other people of their race did.
When it turned out to be a Korean student, the Chinese society relaxed, and the Koreans got nervous--the Korean government made apologies officially saying they are sorry, the sister of the murderer made apologies on behalf of their family too.
Why do a whole race have to feel sorry, even shame, for just one person's crime?
First, the Asians feel lack of confidence in the international community, even one of a million of their kind did bad things, they jump out to express sorrows immediately.
Second, it was the cultural difference between east and west. The easterners tend to form their lives as a group--one member of the family made mistakes, the head of the family (normally the "father") have to toe the scratch for his actions. So the whole group feels guilty for just one.
As for me, there is no way I am feeling shamed for that guy's action. I am sorry for those brillant students who were just about to enter their refulgent life stage suddently lost their lives. Also it makes me feel how important American life is: 32 died, with the whole Koreans apologizing, and the whole world shocked, compared to thousands died in Iraq, not so many care about.
