I've just come across a
chinese article at Hongkong Independent Media's web (香港独立媒体), an essayist teased about the name of a non-government-organization (NGO), Savantas Policy Institute (汇贤智库), co-formed recently by Regina Ip (叶刘淑仪), the resigned government chief incharging public security of Hongkong.
Savant means a profound scholar. It's added a latin suffice, '-tas', like veritas, caritas and pietas to indicate their concern about knowledge as well as wisdom, according to the NGO's interpretation on their
website. The essayist found out that savantas actually is not a creation but means faux savant or pseudo-scholar in french.
An english commentator wrote saying that it's not good to post article like that. Anyone doing things constructively to Hongkong should be appreciated. However, liberals in the territories don't treat her too seriously is justifiable.
Regina was forced to step down in 2003 after sparking public outrage by standing firmly by a deeply unpopular anti-subversion bill, which many thought would curtail civil liberties. Her handling of the issue was attacked as authoritarian. Hongkong citizens in the number of over a million took to the streets then to protest and demand her stepdown.
In an open society like Hongkong, opinion and suggestion, no matter it be casual or serious, constructive or destructive, or even just farty tease all are bricks help solidifying its foundation.
As a side effect, with the help of that piece of information, it helped update me on what Regina and her incompact colleagues have endeavored lately. She is headspearing herself into Hongkong's politics again.
I think Regina was not without reason to follow Larry Diamond as his apostle in Standford University. She has just finished her M.A. dissertation with L. Diamond as her supervisor.
Larry Diamond (still a member of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)) among many other so called academics is actually the vanguard of pressures for liberalization and democratization in under-developed and developing countries. And, USAID as part of America's cultural or ideological-imperialism-machine is a vehicle to fight wars without smoke.
Look at such examples that duplicated America's module of democracy and economic development programs as Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru of Latin America, and India etc, have they not been framed and trapped onto America's globalization web becoming economic slaves of their big brother that at least one-third of their GDPs has to be surrendered annually?
Hongkong was, and still is a crossover for the West's political and ideological penetrations into China.
Regina's Savantas Policy Institute has also registered its representative office in the US. But, I am not here to observe and reflect what they are doing.
