On the top of Mount Túy Vân (Green Clouds) fronted by Cầu Hai Lagoon, there located Thánh Duyên Pagoda of which I am a frequent visitor. I love this old pagoda not only because of its history but also its landscape. One of my favorite spots in this pagoda is Điều Ngự Tower with wooden staircases leading to the third floor where you can see a gorgeous scene of the sampan village on Cầu Hai lagoon and the East Sea.
I visited the pagoda again one cloudy Sunday with a friend to find out that the staircases were removed. I was disappointed not being able to show my friend the great spot for a photo shoot but looking at the graffiti on the walls I understood. What they try to do is to prevent this 173 year old tower from some people’s ignorance. Luckily, there is Tiến Sảng Pavilion at the back of the tower where we could sit down and enjoy the surrounding landscape. Although our view was somewhat blocked by the tall old trees, we still see Quy Sơn (Mount Turtle). From afar, it is like a giant turtle, crouching on a pristine stretch of sand, guarding the peaceful East Sea.
“Let’s go to the beach, Bryan.” I shook Bryan slightly to wake him up from the doze. The wind was nice for a good nap, I know.
“Will it be as nice as it is here?”
“I don’t know. Let’s see...” I made a mysterious face to tease my companion but I could not wait to rush to the beach and lie afloat in the deep blue sea again. I missed the sea and I was hungry for some seafood.
Wearing helmets became compulsory for motorbike drivers and passengers in Việt Nam since 2007. Of course, she understands the importance of wearing a helmet and has followed the law strictly; however, she never likes wearing it. Why not? Well, she simply does not feel comfortable with it.
Unlike the light and airy nón lá (conical hat) that she has been wearing for decades, a helmet is truly a nuisance. It’s heavy, ugly and hard to be fastened and unfastened (at least for her). It takes her, sometimes for ever, to fasten the trap. To save time, her daughter always helps her with it. She used to consider herself a clever woman until the helmet appeared. It makes her feel like she’s such a clumsy person. Her daughter has, for so many times, looked at her wearing a helmet and laughed secretly, she knows.
