Paper dolls

Lan Huế
I wonder how many of you were interested in paper dolls as I was when you were still a little girl or boy. My dream toy was the Western dolls with silky blond hair and blue eyes but my mom could not afford that. She bought me a plastic doll instead. However, with time, the doll became old and ragged so I decided to find something else to place. And there came the paper dolls.

a paper doll scissored
I have a childhood friend nicknamed Ô Liu (Olive) and he was very good at drawing and scissoring. He had a very beautiful collection of paper dolls and their clothes. He inspired the kids like me to scissor the paper dolls as well. I was clumsy at first but then when I got a bit better, I really liked it.
drawing the face of the dolls
I did not scissor only one paper doll but a lot of them and because the dolls easily ripped. When the doll was formed, I drew the face, hair and shoes on it. Of course, each doll was given a name. I still remember one of my dolls’ name was Hoàng Hôn (Sunset) while Ô Liu’s was Bình Minh (Sunrise). I even designed, and made them a lot of clothes. After scissoring the dresses, skirts, blouses, etc., I drew some patterns on them, coloring them as well. I sometimes exchanged the clothes of my dolls with others. It was really fun as we became kiddie moms and dads.

It’s a pity that I don’t see any kids nowadays playing the games that I used to. Paper dolls become a sweet memory of my childhood. Perhaps, I should teach my children how to scissor paper dolls when I’m married. Until then, I’d love to introduce you my newly scissored papper doll: Lan Huế.

Sounds interesting, Lan. I didn't scissor any paper doll but I liked to draw something like Sailor Moon
Would you take some pictures of your paper dolls?

Huong Lan 20. May 2009, 08:05

Hi Thao, I'm glad you like it. I also took some photos as well. Here you go, Thao.

PainterWoman 20. May 2009, 14:42

I used to play with paper dolls all the time when I was young. I would sometimes draw and scissor more clothes. Also, I remember once glueing the doll onto cardboard so it would last longer and not rip.

Huong Lan 20. May 2009, 14:50

Wow, I did not know that people outside Vietnam played paper dolls, too. :o: Yeah, it's a good idea to glue the doll on the cardboard. For me, I glued a small piece of paper behind the doll's neck as it easily ripped.

PainterWoman 20. May 2009, 14:56

I know! The few times I made them, I always drew a thick neck.

Now everytime I buy dolls or toys for Kien, my daughter, I feel like I buy them for myself, sort of to compensate for my childhood... Beautiful recall of the old days, Lan...

Captivevet 21. May 2009, 03:52

Hi M., thanks for your kind words. Yeah, i enjoyed playing with paper dolls when I was a little girl.

Henar 28. May 2009, 09:56

I also used to play with paper dolls when I was young. But I prefered drawing them myself, with lots of beautiful clothes!!! It was my favourite toy when I was small. I even remember designing and drawing robots with clothes too, with a little door which could open, and you could see wires, screws and stuff inside... it was real fun!!!!!
I guess I always wanted to be an artist... since I was very small.

Huong Lan 28. May 2009, 12:42

Designing and drawing robots? It's really cool, isn't it? Does the childhood hobby inspire you and make you a graphic designer today?

Captivevet 28. May 2009, 22:59

Huong Lan 29. May 2009, 02:30
