a brainstorm dinner

, , ,

last week i was so angry at myself for incautiously tearing a shoulder muscle.

i thought that was so stupid, i went out and bought some brains. they were delicious as ever in spite of the somewhat onerous preparation and the time it takes. look it up. it takes three hours of preparation before you even start cooking them.

i enjoyed the feasting on cervelles aux buerre noir avec championes (sp).

i put the concoction on a birds nest spaghetti (that was a good idea.) but as i thought about it more, i realized that these were calves brains... how smart do you think they are? oh well, it was delicious. but i recommend that you get someone else to cook it for you.

cook them well until they are browned. turn them over and brown the other side. these have soaked in a court bouillion for two hours.

now i am smarter:

brains are not pretty so i put this pic up to balance things out.

Oh, I just can't eat brains!

Actually, is it safe to do so? Mad cow!!!!

ha ha ha mon, i knew someone wouldn't be able to conceive of eating brains. really, they are a delicious delicacy if it's done right.

By I_ArtMan, # 14. April 2008, 03:21:01

avatar
I had them when I was a kid. Tried to eat it, and threw up!

Just the taste wasn't for me!!! I just remember that forever...

By momable, # 14. April 2008, 03:25:12

avatar
hi handsome!
I grew up eating everything that can be eaten from an animal!
My kids believe that if I ever enter "Fear factor" I will not only win but I will enjoy the food too!
They are right!
so,
did your parents tell you "eating brains will increase your IQ " ???
mine did.
It never worked on my IQ but I did enjoy the meals!
I am glad you feel well now!

By ellinidata, # 14. April 2008, 03:30:54

avatar
Just seeing that conjures up

By momable, # 14. April 2008, 03:35:31

Oh, well, to each their own!

I am glad you enjoyed eating that. Shows you are your old self again.

How is the shoulder? All well?

Later, my friend!

By momable, # 14. April 2008, 03:36:38

avatar
poor mom, bad experience. that's the way i feel about scotch, or any whiskey for that matter. sometimes we have things too soon.
yes the shoulder is back to normal today. but only because i nursed it like swan hovers over its one egg.

angeliki,
your kids must love you a lot. i know how much i appreciated my mother for setting an example of a person with an open mind. she may have been blond but she was brilliant.

By I_ArtMan, # 14. April 2008, 04:01:24

avatar
yes Scott,
we are the only three of us blood related in the US
and we love each other unconditionally and passionately.
My mother was a natural blond as well and a brilliant mind!
We did not have pizza and chicken nuggets those days,
we had real meals cooked from scratch
the family meals religiously served every single day.
The best family time ever.Dinner time.

By ellinidata, # 14. April 2008, 11:18:48

avatar
Scott, Im sure it tastes great, but I think Ill have to pass on this one.

Ellinidata you're absolutely right - dinnertime was always the best time. We went all around the table asking each person what they learned that day. It opened up a lot of great discussions. Sometimes I felt that we should move a bookcase into the dining room so we look up answers that arose from our discussions.

By cakkleberrylane, # 14. April 2008, 12:51:14

avatar
Scott,
see picture #4
in the salad plate,
is that "halva"???
It looks very much like it

By ellinidata, # 14. April 2008, 13:11:36

avatar
Scott, mmm interesting. I have not tried brains yet... do they taste anything like liver? Ellinidata, meals are still cooked from scratch around here. That is the only way to afford to feed four growing children and a hubby who loves to eat. p:

Ok, I'm gonna be the immature one here, amongst all of your cultured friends: :yuck: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By CultureSurfer, # 14. April 2008, 14:19:22

avatar
angel, I am glad you live in the planet "family".
Things around here come from places that give you plastic toys with your meal
I am the alien in the neighborhood :D
we still peel potatoes together and wash the dishes as a family
Nice to know we are not alone

Naomi,
the traditional Easter meal in Greece it's the following,
I had it at the age of one....
http://greekfood.about.com/od/soupsstews/r/mayieritsa1.htm

By ellinidata, # 14. April 2008, 17:04:52

avatar
ah, naomi,
i knew some of you would not stomach the idea of eating brains.

it didn't make me any smarter. of course, i knew that. but i'll try anything.

angeliki,

yep, that's a chunk of halva for dessert... seemed appropriate.

dinner time was when we talked and wondered about things. if you asked my father a question, he would always essay more information than we could even absorb. he was always patiently molding our minds.
my brother and i used to call hi "dr. science". but it was a good time for laughing and telling of tales.

lois,
that was a great tradition, because, whatever one learned the others learned from the telling. cool.

sarah,
brains don't taste anything like liver, sort of nutty sweet. they are very rich and you always wish you had more. it's not healthy to eat brains often... it's heart attack food, like blue cheese.

By I_ArtMan, # 14. April 2008, 17:09:00

avatar
yum...........halva!
I didn't have it for some time,
I do make my own with semolina. But it is the soft one.
The moment I loose 4 more lbs I am driving to the Greek/Lebanese stores and "halva" is in me grocery list!
I see you buy the one with pistachios , great choice!

By ellinidata, # 14. April 2008, 17:47:06

avatar
Blech on the halva as well. I know, I'm Jewish so I'm supposed to like the stuff, but I just don't see any redeeming qualities to this food. Speaking of which...

A few weeks ago, I had a craving for what I call "Jewish heart attack food," which is my particular case in Kosher corned beef, something I eat about once/year (about the same frequency for McDonald's). So we stopped in a deli and I could NOT stop laughing looking at those nasty cow tongues. All I could think about was having MY tongue sitting behind glass at a deli counter. p:

And that story reminds me of one of my first times in Europe. We were in Luxembourg & I ordered fish. Of course, it came with the head included. Being even less mature food-wise than I am now (I know, hard to imagine), I asked the waitress to please remove the head for me. She proceeded to slice of the fish head with a large spoon & leave it on the plate.

By CultureSurfer, # 14. April 2008, 19:01:56

avatar
@Naomi,
there is nothing more tasty than a tongue with onions in a wine sauce. Pickled too.
I know it is a totally different cuisine between European and Americans but when you grow up in a small village where the back yard garden gives you the vegetables, hunting gives you the meat and the killing of a cow or sheep by a neighbor gives you a reason to celebrate,
(yes, that's how it was 25 years ago),
then you get to appreciate every single item of the animal or the fish.
When you fish in the river and you have to clean your own fish,
you consider the fish eye balls as a delicacy.
Survivor's and Fear Factor's meals are unknown to the majority of viewers,
for some like myself,
they are a reminder of how far I have come
Maybe that's why I hear people say ,
"I have no money but I took my wife and child out to dinner .........."
I say what??????:eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

tonight we're doing one of my favorite meals: lamb curry with rice.
too busy cooking to post it now.

sometimes i feel like the kids are all outside drooling at the kitchen screen door, wondering what's for dinner. omg, what has happened to my blog?

tomorrow, i am devoting the whole day to painting. oddly enough it's a greek goddess and some sunflowers.

By I_ArtMan, # 15. April 2008, 01:42:37

avatar
What if you're eating tongue & confuse it with your own?

By CultureSurfer, # 15. April 2008, 01:47:19

avatar
 Scott if it wasn't for the screen you will hear the knocking at the door !!

I am sure the painting will be perfect tomorrow!
The sun is always bright in Greece like the sunflowers and the Greek goddesses always loved to run in the sunflower fields!

By ellinidata, # 15. April 2008, 02:02:03

avatar
i think you might become tongue tied naomi.

angeliki, i'll keep that image in mind for the next painting. this one is more placid.

By I_ArtMan, # 15. April 2008, 02:18:27

avatar
sweet Scott,
your brilliant mind doesn't need images from me!
Your painting are an inspiration to all of us that feel like sparrows next to an eagle !

It's the mini interview by Bill T., edited. Hoping the small amount of soundtrack I added on this one passes the censoring software.
