mountains are there to be climbed

, , , , ,

what have you done with your whole life.
that is the faustian query
without the love and the strife
i'm sure i would be too weary.

mountains are there to be climbed
poems are waiting to be rhymed
but something still has me stymed
it's all so badly timed.

were the young to have wisdom
and the old to run from place to place
what a wonderful kingdom
what beauty, what form, oh, consumate grace.

i am complaining just ken my song
in seeking wisdom life can seem long
do every damn thing can't be so wrong
face every challenge, we will get strong

but what is the point
i'm so out of joint
my gauge is on empty
the self i anoint

this is where i am going on my vacation. i will swim in the ocean and rinse in the river. five days camping out.

i always seem to gain ten or twenty pounds in the summer. is that because
i burn more calories fighting the cold?
i eat less in the summer. it's such a puzzle because i do more physically
during the summer also. my bmi would be exactly right without those twenty pounds.
a couple of years ago i pushed my weight down to 170 (six feet even), and i felt so much better
physically. all i did then was ride my bike five miles to the beach, swim in the cold pacific
a couple of times, ride my bike home and eat half as much. that's not so hard.
but that takes time and i am greedy about time.

this is the way to cut down... just eat half. one egg instead of two etc.

i'm working on it. this is all homegrown food i am living on.

also brown rice, fish, tofu and soy milk.

i enjoy doing it this way. but it does take time to live naturally. i am making dolmas and i already juiced the grapes. made about a quart. and it was so good.

but i haven't got out much. for two reasons... this website is taking all my time
(the one i mentioned a few posts back). the other is the price of gas. my jeep is a gas hog.
so holed up here in my lovely new home and burning the midnight oil conquering dreamweaver and ftp,
i feel so... so..... restless. cabin fever i guess.

well, here's the plan... as soon as this website is launched and breathing the ether, and i get paid,
i'm driving up the coast again and just ride my bike and swim and climb the grassy hills.

Here’s some interesting pictures of those uncanny Chinese.

i am greedy about time.

The argument is pretty strong (I think) that one could not spend one's time more effectively than in pursuit of physical well-being, and mental stability. Seems your bike trips to the beach did both?

scott cumming 15. August 2008, 03:03

and i'll just add they do go hand in hand. i am sure i have verified that. thanks for commenting matthew.

Matthew 15. August 2008, 03:20

It's proving itself to me again right now. I finally have the time and the gumption to get back in shape.

scott cumming 15. August 2008, 04:41

right on

just gotta keep starting again. and again

Matthew 15. August 2008, 13:08

lol

I spent a very long time not stopping. The older I get, the more not stopping makes sense - because starting gets more and more difficult.

I envy you your trip. It looks as though it will be beautiful.

scott cumming 15. August 2008, 17:05

it's a little dry in the camping field, but the two mile bike-ride to the beach is lush by the river. also, the hill trails are gentle. i'm no spring chicken to go around scaling vertical walls anymore. but this spot is a kind of paradise. it's quiet and the days are cool in the shade (that pacific air-conditioner). the water is about 55 degrees farenheit, but the river is probably more like 68. it's nice and deep and calm and clear.

Matthew 15. August 2008, 17:57

That water is a little cool for me. Bracing, I think, is the word. It does look idyllic.

PainterWoman 15. August 2008, 19:13

Your vacation spot looks like paradise.

Allan 15. August 2008, 19:16

Great poetry (and great entry)

Two lines I will carry with me:

"mountains are there to be climbed
poems are waiting to be rhymed"

Thank you.

B. Mazumder 15. August 2008, 19:57

A wonderful post. Good poem, good food, and a very nice camping spot to go with the mood! Wowies.

Nicolas Borgsmidt 15. August 2008, 22:19

You´ll get rich of great thinking, where you go, I´m sure.
Wonderful post Scott

Eliane a/k/a Elly 16. August 2008, 02:30

Lovely post. I have to exercise more, too. The Olympic gardens are amazing. Thanks for showing them.

What a lovely camping trip you will have.

I can't get over you grew a cantaloupe!

Léazz 16. August 2008, 02:55

Dear Sir Scott,
I love the first pix. Nice.

scott cumming 16. August 2008, 08:11

matthew, once you get it in it's o.k.

pam, it is paradise. the deer come right up to you. if you search big sur on my blog, you'll see a little movie of them. i think it was september 2006

thanks allan, for commenting, glad you liked the post. i hope my next post will have a link to the website. that will mean i can start my vacation.

yes b, i can't wait... a great adventure is coming.

nic,
you're right about me... i get a lot of deep pondering when i go camping... so quiet and the nights under the stars by the campfire... too cool

thanks mom,
hey it grew itself... all i did was harvest it. i have figs and grapes and avocado too. but avocado is later in october. where i go to water once a week, kind of caretaking. i get piles of lemons, oranges and fresh herbs. love it.

hi queen leazz, nice of you to stop in. it's a beautiful spot for sure... i was there when i was about twenty. then two years ago i was flying around with the google thing and i saw it. remembered how cool a spot it was. i drove up and found the same spot i had spent many wild and happy days at... with some flower children....

Nicolas Borgsmidt 16. August 2008, 08:43

I look forward to see the creations of a refreshed mind

Léazz 16. August 2008, 08:47

I loved your poem Scott! It was beautiful and so sad somehow. Life. Life was never easy. Wishing you a fun holiday Scott!

Matthew 16. August 2008, 17:31

That Google thing is amazing, isn't it?

Olga 16. August 2008, 18:14

dolmas??? WOW! This is so delicious! My mother-in-law cooks it!

Edward Piercy 20. August 2008, 19:21

Have a great trip, Scott. Watch out for them turtles!

Panzerplatte 20. August 2008, 21:12

great poem Scott, your just full of surprises

deborah 21. August 2008, 08:05

dear scott,

may your soul be replenished and the mountains high

enough for you to reach and touch the sky

the stars will unite with the touch of your hand

in the silence a small voice will amend

that part lost in youth renewed in wisdom

under the moon

great blog post scott. you are one special person and i thank you for sharing your inspirations. my muse has been tickled this day because of you. deb.

scott cumming 21. August 2008, 18:43

marvelous

not only marvelous but straight to the heart of the matter.
thanks deborah.

leo, where have you been hiding? i know, i know... starting over is hard to do. i can't believe opera can't give you back your original blog. *aghast

Matthew 21. August 2008, 18:47

I'm aghast that opera can't give you back your original blog, too - especially since there is no way for you to delete your profile.

Panzerplatte 22. August 2008, 04:47

Do I look happy? :frown:

scott cumming 22. August 2008, 07:42

at the moment it looks like a mine. wish i could help.

what do you hear from the opera staff, leo? grrrr

Panzerplatte 22. August 2008, 07:49

not a peep... awww

deborah 22. August 2008, 15:22

msn did the same to me under my old username. and the msn staff did nothing but give me the run-around. i gave up trying and started over myself. it is a mystery to me who else would be boxerbtch with my email address, but msn couldn't figure it out either -- of course they (msn help desk) won't admit to the situation. oh well, life has gone on and now i'm known as 1bluebox (or two). deborah.

Panzerplatte 22. August 2008, 17:37

Hi deb. I can still log into my original e-mail acct, just not
the profile.

deborah 22. August 2008, 17:52

oh, i've always got my nts email as my main identification. the other email addresses have either been terminated due to 'non-use' or the systems pretend i never existed under their email addresses and requirements (at one time i was steeleboxer@yahoo). funny, the profile won't let you edit -- but yet, you have access to your email . . . . that is a puzzling situation. good luck figuring out that rubic's cube!

Panzerplatte 22. August 2008, 18:07

I can't get images or anything to post right here. :eyes:

deborah 22. August 2008, 19:42

don't be discouraged this day. opera has a glich and i've started to post this comment twice. the browser has re-loaded itself twice during the act of my typing. i lost these words before. it is not our fault, it might not be opera's fault, it might be we have too much fun gaining access to knowledge and friendships through these wired means . . . .

The essence of a good mountain Leazz

scott cumming 23. August 2008, 18:35

the glass mountain whose sheer face without a single cleft reflects the sun in day and blinds the stars while at night reflecting clusters of galaxies shames the dull moon. many have ridden their noble steeds to mortal agony attempting to scale its heights. but we have at least found it and will put our heads together. who knows? we may divine the key by which the mighty mountain can be conquered. perhaps the secret lies within the runic ballad... :wizard:

deborah 24. August 2008, 00:51

scott, that is beautiful! i was reading this and thinking about mr and mrs duplo -- thomas is very talented and i thought you might want to explore his blog space and beautiful photos. here's the link my friend. i hope you enjoy the view from his lens as much as i do. deb.

scott cumming 10. September 2008, 03:23

i was so happy to see that... goddess angeliki had a party for me too...
i feel loved. thank you so much... the cake was delicious.

deborah 10. September 2008, 06:58

and we hope you scaled the mountain to see the sunrise and the sunset in your own time, at your own pace!

there could not be
nor will we see

that light at the
end of the tunnel

wether we tread,
walk, crawl, or
stand tall

forever in the mist
of those walls
