a helluva day

, , ,

yes, i said a helluva a day. walked for miles looking for the eye clinic in noho. my eyes fountains of gummy tears... but i took my camera with me to stay amused by life. i'll just show a few of the highlights and finish with a giant dinner i am about to eat. when you're sick... eat! :sherlock:

this is a beautiful gold statue at the academy of television arts and sciences.

this is the main building:

this nice lady was very sympathetic about my eyes... she says it's conjunctivitis. i gave her my card.... beautiful dog.

cool modern offices:

even the hydrants are shining here.

one theatre of many:

my next painting (sketch for) yes, it will be a self portrait.

and here's my reward for all my suffering today.

flying to the beachmore war?

meli,
I love your new post!

I hope your eyes feel better soon,
three days it is three LONGGGGGGGG days for an eye discomfort,

I am looking forward to the new painting,

I love the pictures you took today,

I crave the dinner and of course I smile seeing you added Sappho by the tray

"Fragment 2:"

Come to me from Crete to the sacred recess
Of this temple: here you will find a grove
Of apple tress to charm you, and on the altars
Frankincense fuming. Here ice water babbles among the apple

Branches and musk roses have overshadowed
All the ground; here down from the leaves' bright flickering
Entrancement settles. There are meadows, too, where the horses graze knee

Deep in flowers, yes, and the breezes blow here
Honey sweet and softer [
[ ]

Here now you, my goddess [ ] Cypris
In these golden wineglasses gracefully mix
Nectar with the gladness of our festivities
And greet this libation (Powell 8).

"Honey sweet" I hope you feel 100% soon,
you have a very special place in my heart

scott cumming 7. November 2008, 06:27

thanks for the comment meli. and for the great quote. sappho is so pure. i guess what i was saying... it was a classic day and a classic dinner so i had to dress it up with a classic poet.

Allan 7. November 2008, 07:40

Seems like there's a new, great painting coming up. Interesting sketching. Promising indeed.

And besides, what is life apart from a helluva day? Drinking selected beauty with our senses and believing in coherence at some level is what we can do.

All the best to you and your eyes.

PainterWoman 7. November 2008, 08:45

Looking forward to seeing the new painting. Love the sketch. Hope your eyes clear up soon. I think I had that more than once when my kids were young. They'd bring it home from school and before I knew they had it, I'd have it too.

scott cumming 7. November 2008, 08:47

so glad you sailed into my helluva day, allan, promising indeed and the fates are trying to keep me from it. but the immune system is a marvelous machine... we'll see tomorrow. good mood now
just watched the funniest damn movie... laughed and cried all through it. it's called "mr. bean's holiday" funny funny fun. i needed a good laugh... fred saves.

hey allan, that's a good line.... "believing in coherence at some level is what we can do."

Allan 7. November 2008, 09:16

I believe in Mr Bean. Old Rubber Face, as I call him.

Dan DeVille 7. November 2008, 10:50

Looking forward for the new painting.
Hope you're eyes are better by now.

Dan

Angeliki 7. November 2008, 13:11

PS I hope your eyes clear today

Matthew 7. November 2008, 13:19

Did you end up in the clinic? I hope your eyes are feeling better!

I see your reward was a twofer - a great mean and some great news

scott cumming 7. November 2008, 19:05

pam,
it's not too bad, just irritating and ugly. i would almost just wait for it to clear up by itself, except i don't know for sure. today i start again to get medical advice.

scott cumming 7. November 2008, 19:15

allan, rubber face... yep, he earned that nickname. it was so funny that movie. if you haven't seen it, see it. it has a great crescendo ending. i was sorry it was over.

hi dan,
well, it's no better. but i'll be working on it today. thanks for stopping by.

meli, thanks for decorating my comments with beans. i got nowhere fast yesterday. i called a clinic. the answering machine said they were out to lunch so i walked over there. but they were closed. i'm afraid to drive; it's like driving under water. trying again to reach them on the phone and make an appointment.

yes, matthew, it was a double whammy of good things and one setback. not even yet. i will be so glad when i get this fixed.
i really worked up an appetite walking but my eyes were bigger than my stomach. i only ate half of it.

Angeliki 7. November 2008, 19:28

Scott I am so glad you avoided driving!

I hope your eyes feel better soon and you avoid the extra aggravation like the long waiting time in emergency rooms,
visit a pharmacy at your area,
the pharmacists usually have the basic knowledge to give you a solution for clearing the eyes till you see a professional,
I wish I was closer!
You need some TLC and I hope this song gives you a hint of how much I worry...

Matthew 7. November 2008, 19:31

"I only ate half of it."

Meaning, of course, that there is a second meal to be had! Yea!

Eliane a/k/a Elly 7. November 2008, 19:42

Please get meds for your eyes! You need them.

Yulia 7. November 2008, 21:06

Hi Scatt. I came back from Finland today and read(and watched) your post.Very nice picture.....liked a lot!
Hope your eyes will be better soon.See ya!

Yulia 7. November 2008, 21:07

you do have a way of touching me even at a distance.
i loved the song... healey... new to me. good style.
but you're the one with ojos angelica, i'm just the old goat with the hungry eyes.

matthew,
yes a second act to that dinner. i'll turn it into a nice garlicy soup with some leeks and lentils. all the meat is gone. that bourgignon fed me five times because i froze it after two.

mom,
it'll be all right. i have a solid appointment at the opthamologist at three. and they accept medi-cal so help is on the way.

meli, i'm afraid i have to drive this time. it took over two hours to walk it yesterday. but i'll go slow and carefully.

Angeliki 7. November 2008, 21:19

:o: I told you about old goats in my "It's a Goat thing" post
*hugs*

good luck at 3pm,
I am looking forward for news,

scott cumming 7. November 2008, 21:22

Yulia 7. November 2008, 21:25

Edward Piercy 7. November 2008, 22:18

Anonymous 7. November 2008, 23:36

Linda writes:

Dear Scott, get well soon, hope your eyes don't hurt. Promising sketch, meal looks very tasty, and what a headline in the paper eh? Such great great news!
XXX Linda

scott cumming 8. November 2008, 01:04

ed,
thanks for the comment. that's an affirmation.

linda, no it doesn't hurt just itches like hell and blurry.

well, the doctor thinks it's no big deal, so i am relieved of the worry anyway... it seems some kind of rhinocerous has made his abode in my tearduct.

bacitracin four times a day and see him again in two weeks.

Angeliki 8. November 2008, 01:15

"well, the doctor thinks it's no big deal"

great news meli!

I am delighted to know that you got the necessary medication!
now lets have those chamomiles with some brandy!

scott cumming 8. November 2008, 02:05

yeah, i wish...

Matthew 8. November 2008, 02:12

I'm glad relief is at hand - and that it's nothing to worry about.

Eliane a/k/a Elly 8. November 2008, 21:44

Wish you best of health!!!

Edward Piercy 8. November 2008, 22:20

I didn't realize that Northern Africa was that dirty. They need to get a few brooms out and tidy things up a bit.

scott cumming 8. November 2008, 23:34

mom,
thanks, better already painting through the greasy eyeballs... talk about a challenge. lmao

thanks meli,
i love to see from above. i can imagine being there. i would be checking my leash every five minutes though. the thought of drifting through space until its over causes a sensation in my stomach similar to hunger pangs.
i wonder if an unimpelled body would gather any momentum or acceleration in space.

ed,
that was a perceptive observation. just imagine if they swept it up a little and watered.

Angeliki 8. November 2008, 23:47

meli, I am glad you enjoyed it,I find it magnificent!!!
I stole the link from Pam,
as for me being in space,
I would check my leash and diapers too!

scott cumming 9. November 2008, 00:04

i just got kicked out of email for the first time ever... i was looking at your emails and suddenly, opera is sending me error messages i never saw before.

i really loved the 'evil wave'

i think i even posted the blue marble once.... but it seemed a little different then.
i'm just resting from my first attempt to paint under greasy water. lol
i'm getting there.

Angeliki 9. November 2008, 00:22

hmmmm,
I had hard time with gmail and yahoo today
I did not use any since yesterday for this very reason...
if you noticed I was asking about the doctor in your posts....
I hope it is solved soon!
I am glad to know you will attempt to paint, if you see any discomfort open windows and doors that will help....

Reuters has some amazing pictures the Wave was from them...I  it too!

I got an email last year from my friend Ravo with Satellite pictures, it was similar but pp and no picture could be copied,
then out of "the blue" I got this from my sister Katerina  it is Greece from above :

and speaking for heights we took this picture on our way to Olympus:
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb107/ellinidata/GR%20photos/ThroughTheMistMakrinitsaPilioGR-1.jpg

scott cumming 9. November 2008, 00:31

cool picture... so different from looking at a map.

the one of the houses says a lot. it says a lot of walking up hill.

Angeliki 9. November 2008, 00:52

when a picture gives message it is always my favorite ,
like this one:
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb107/ellinidata/GR%20photos/PromenadeCorfu.jpg

and this of a "laterna",
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb107/ellinidata/GR%20photos/laterna.jpg

it is a gramophone type of music that it was very popular in Greece.

During the late 40's early 50's poverty was in most parts of Greece ,
the musical entertainment with a "laterna" in the village's square was the only one people had .....

Later they were able to afford radios.

"Laternas" can be seen in a musical Museums these days,

scott cumming 9. November 2008, 01:28

that's fascinating about the laternas. i think it must have been a very pleasant experience on a balmy night to be strolling with a friend and hear the laterna coming nearer.

Pfelelep 9. November 2008, 11:47

beautiful sketch! The naked woman looks like a bit like Louise Brooks. Did she accept to be your model? How lucky you are!

Angeliki 9. November 2008, 15:47

oh yes!!!
it was very distinctive sounds.
when in the cities people got radios and later Tvs that specific music had moved to small poor villages where people did not even have electricity to use a radio ...
I hope I don;t bore you with these old stories..
the "laterna" owners were always made sure to decorate the picture of the lady(for some reason it was always a lady...) with necklaces and flowers...

http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=FNkt8P2X6jQ
here a VERY old clip from a Greek movie where young gypsies in the country side approach a "laterna owner" and he plays for them to dance !!

the part after the 2.40 sec it is the music I recall playing in the old narrow streets of "plaka" the area under the Acropolis in the 80's...
From what I hear there are no more laternas in those streets any longer :frown:

have fun at the studio today!

scott cumming 9. November 2008, 16:36

thanks for coming pfelelep, no she is imaginary.

doesn't bore me a bit... kind of sad though the way special things slip into the dark night of yesterdays.

Angeliki 9. November 2008, 16:40

Eliane a/k/a Elly 9. November 2008, 21:57

Hey they say that one of the Impressionist who painting soft, blurry paintings actually did so because he saw the world that way. I forget who it was at this time...

So, paint foggy!

scott cumming 10. November 2008, 03:38

that would be claude monet. but not until he was 70 years old.

and i am painting foggy  at least for a few more days.
another artist who painted in spite of eye problems was el greco who painted those elongated figures, he had a stigmatism and saw things that way.

Angeliki 10. November 2008, 14:10

"el greco"

scott cumming 10. November 2008, 20:11

yep... the greek great painter Doménicos Theotokópoulos.
i would call him the first expressionist.

Angeliki 10. November 2008, 23:16

PainterWoman 10. November 2008, 23:43

Scott I hope your eyes are well by the time I get back. I'm off to Fargo, ND for a week. Back on the 18th.

scott cumming 11. November 2008, 00:02
