lovely dinner with nieman marcus's famous expensive recipe included for dessert

, , , ,

outrageous... and you are right to feel ripped off. i

am going to help spread this post. i suggest everyone who reads this read dacotah's post... link below and spread the recipe accross the globe. but if you want to live long, don't put four eggs in. one will do.

but i also have a 'come to dinner post'

as you all know, i live alone and one of the activities i indulge in now and then is to cook a spectacular dinner for myself and share it cyberly with my friends.

this is a lovely beef stroganoff. i don't use recipes normally, but this version of stroganoff takes about three hours. there are shortcuts, but i don't take them.
first you marinate the beef in two inch strips. wine is best... marsala wine made only in sicily is the very best.

use fresh shallots and garlic. go easy on the salt because you can use salted butter to saute' the shallots and garlic. sweet basil is the only herb needed. a little black pepper is good too. don't throw out the marinade (overnight in the refrigerator, covered). just add a can of beef broth and cook it all for a couple of hours with a half a pound of fresh sliced mushrooms.

then at the end you add a can of mushroom soup and about 4 ounces of sour cream and simmer until the gravy is a good thickness. pout this all over either "spaetzel", you make yourself or flat egg noodles.

i didn't have any noodles so i used a japanese noodle made from whole grain. broccoli and bread round out the meal. steam the broccoli to retain the vitamins. don't over cook vegetables.

for sounds with dinner, i recommend borodin's "night on bald mountain".

don't try to eat the cookies until two hours later... this is so good you will probably over-eat.

here's the $250 recipe:

NEIMAN-MARCUS COOKIES (Recipe may be halved)
2 cups butter
24 oz. chocolate chips
4 cups flour
2 cups brown sugar
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
2 cups sugar
1 - 8 oz. Hershey Bar (grated)
5 cups blended oatmeal
4 eggs
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. vanilla
3 cups chopped nuts (your choice)
Measure oatmeal, and blend in a blender to a fine

powder.Cream
the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla, mix

together
with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda.

Add chocolate
chips, Hershey Bar, and nuts. Roll into balls, and

place two inches
apart on a cookie sheet.Bake for 10 minutes at 375

degrees. Makes 112
cookies.
PLEASE READ THE RECIPE AND SEND IT TO EVERY

PERSON YOU KNOW
WHO has a E-MAIL ADDRESS! THIS IS REALLY

TERRIFIC!! Even if the people
on your e-mail list don't eat sweets send it to them

and ask them to
pass it on. Let's make sure we get
these ladies $250.00 worth. Enjoy the cookies, they

are good....

http://my.opera.com/Dacotah/blog/ or,
http://my.opera.com/Dacotah/blog/2007/10/07/a-cookie-recipe-worth-250-must-read-lol-lol

i am on dacotah's side in this... there's too many big

companies out there sucking us dry.

my comment:

what really gets me is that that's just a standard

recipe for chocolate chip cookies. there's nothing

special about it except it's a lethal dose of eggs.

so you just had an overly avaricious salesperson.

10% of $2.50 is .25 but $250 is $25. that's just pure

greed and i have no doubt that she knew she could

fool you by not mentioning two hundred and fifty

dollars. two-fifty... she should be fired because she

gives nieman marcus a bad name.

equalitythe wrong way

Well, that sounds terrific. I'm going to make that for my dinner tomorrow night! I'm going to treat myself to a trip to the art museum in Sarasota - fabulous collection of Rubens and that will top off the day nicely!

ok guys, I did some much deserved research, and neiman marcus posts thier own cookie recipe for free. Also, Snopes.com believes this little urban legend to be false. I have some info on it on my blog....I tend to believe its false, because the story has been around for so long. And because it's posted on NM's website.
HOWEVER. I do agree that it's ridiculous for stores to charge $50 dollars for a 9 dollar tshirt. ESPECIALLY since that tshirt probably wasn't really even nine dollars in the first place because it was made in a third world country by a woman making pennies a day. For anyone interested, i recommend reading about the grameen bank, and also shopping at fair trade stores like ten thousand villages.

The original version of this story from the 1940s involved a red velvet cake recipe from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

Your own meal seems like it deserves its own legend (not urban), sounds delicious

yes, nic it beats peanut butter... that's just a quick fix.

oops,
i didn't know this was making the rounds for 67 years. all i knew was 'damsel in distress' and sir lancelot girded his forty pound broadsword and went to work. but it's cool. now i know and someday i will be on a quiz show and i'll have the answer to this obscure question... thank you bici for commenting.

lois, i appreciate your dropping in ... sounds like my kind of day.... dinner and a museum. yum.

hi sprogger... thanks for commenting.... don't see you here that often. keep coming back.

Wonderful! I made the stroganoff and it was fantastic - so much that I've already got the beef marinating for the next time. What a perfect ending to a wonderful day. I posted pictues of this dinner on my blog!

cool lois,
i'm glad my loose way of describing the recipe worked. it's just common sense. i didn't think i needed to put down measurements or times. you did well.
it's a great recipe especially if you have a tough piece of meat. between the overnight marinating and a couple of hours of simmering before the sourcream or the mushroom soup... the meat just melts in your mouth. i'll come by and see what it looks like.

mom, i didn't know about the snopes site either... fascinating.

Thought you all might enjoy the Wiki version of it.

The store is featured in an urban legend involving a supposed recipe for its popular chocolate chip cookie.[18] In the legend, a woman and her daughter enjoy a cookie while shopping at Neiman Marcus in Dallas, Texas, and ask for the recipe. The waiter informs her there will be a "two-fifty" charge, which the woman interprets as a modest $2.50. Upon receiving her VISA statement, she is shocked to discover she has been charged $250.00 instead. In revenge, she photocopies the recipe and urges her friends to distribute it for free to everyone they know so that the store will make no further profit on its sale. Because the story typically was passed along as a photocopy, it falls in the legend subcategory of Xeroxlore.

Folklorists have pointed out three chief holes in the story: (1) Neiman Marcus does not accept Visa for any in-store purchase (although Visa is accepted for online purchases through the company's website); (2) prior to the emergence of the legend, the store did not have a chocolate chip cookie;[19] and (3) a similar story has been around since the 1940s, originally involving a red velvet cake recipe from the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. It wasn't until the 1980s that the story's focus shifted to cookies. (The cookie version of the story originally was attached to Mrs. Fields cookies, causing that company eventually to post disavowals of the notices at all its stores.) Although the story is untrue, Neiman Marcus nonetheless posted a cookie recipe on its web site to quell rumors.

Amazing how an urban legend can not only do the rounds for so long, but also bring some truth to itself (the company created a cookie recipe after the rumour focussed on them) simply by it's weight.

I revisited your blog to get the recipe for the stroganoff again. We're partying tonight!!! Stroganoff and a glass of wine for me, canned tuna for the kitties! Well, I guess that's the kind of partying you do after the age of 50!
