Expanding Your Speeddial

, , , , , , , ,

One of these days, phones will have a "10" and an "11" button to save you the two strokes it takes to make each of these numbers. Until then, you can expand your Speeddial to be larger (or smaller) than 3x3. This is particularly helpful for people with widescreen monitors or large monitors.

To increase your speeddialage, close Opera, open up your speeddial.ini file (located in your profile directory or opera:config#UserPrefs|opera:config)

At the following three lines of code to the bottom of your speeddial.ini file, save, close the file, and open Opera again.
[Size]
Rows=3
Columns=4
Thanks to Remco for discovering and posting about this feature. Other people have also posted instructions, screenshots, etc in case my instructions aren't working: Tamil, RemcoLanting, larskl.

Unfortunately, Opera Link will only sync the first 9 speed dial entries, so you may want to cram your most important speddials into the first 9 slots if you use this feature.

And apparently a lot of my visitors are searching for how to expand their speeddial. So Opera, if you happen to be reading this blog, then make sure a future version makes it easier to change the speed dial size (maybe opera:config|User Prefs#Speed Dial Rows and opera:config|User Prefs#Speed Dial Columns])

Optionally, grab the new Opera 10.00 Beta which has a GUI for changing the number of rows and columns, adding a background image to your speeddial, and much more. Note: if you have more than 9 speed dials, currently only the first 9 will be sync'd to your link.opera.com page

Ooh, that's incredibly useful, thanks for the tip. I have to wonder why this isn't configurable in opera:config though...

Oops, so very sorry... it was just my version of Opera. I can't believe I trolled. *Bows head in shame*

Too make humble amends, I offer the following tip:

In the same directory as SpeedDial.ini, find the Thumbnails folder. You can replace those .png files with any image you like, as long as the specs are otherwise the same. Custom SpeedDial images... w00t!

This doesn't appear to be the same in Opera 9.5.1 (latest update). Instead of size, it just lists the links in speeddial.ini

Personally, I'd love a speeddial of about 12 PER TAB :idea: , and each tab with different sessions. I trawl masses of web queries and like to keep the thumbed tabs open for well, 'speed dialling'. Thank goodness for session manager saving all these sessions (Firefox) as bookmarking a single page seems so fruitless these days.

Now, is it possible to add multiple speeddial sessions?

Find me on Linuxquestions.org

Works beautifully.

You can take rows up to 5 and columns up to 8 (you can go more, if you have higher resolution screen, or larger screen...I'm not sure.

But 40 speed dial slots is PERFECT. Thanks.

is it working with 9.61?

I knew about this feature, though I haven't used it till now.
And now, when I got 9 Speed Dial filled buttons, I searched for it and found this post.
Applying it showed me what I wanted, additional(4th) column.

@ Opera 9.60

It's very nice :smile:, so Thanks.

To user@post #18, you certainly have some problems applying this feature.
You want to see screenshot, here you are: http://tingo.site90.net/temp/operaSpeedDialFeature.jpg .

Bye.

Sweet it works :)

Opera should make this accessible in the config!

type opera:config to get the directories on linux/windows etc of the speeddial file.

Thank You.

You saved my life.

It just occurred to me that that you might be able to have multiple speed dial sessions by using a multi-user setup. See Opera KB: Changing from a single-user to a multi-user installation on Windows or NonTroppo's OperaWiki: Setting up Multiple Profiles in Opera. I haven't personally tried a multi-user installation to test this theory. If anyone has any luck creating multiple sets of speeddials, please let me know.
