I know i should have brought you an elephant... and Kind f did. And then next time I will send you a postcard... A black and white week.. haven't really started with it yet though...
I am sooo sorry Ze, i can not remember, I am so sorry, please remind me?
I first went to India more than 40 years ago. It was on the planned route of the commercial ship I worked on as a crew member and the port of call, en route to China, was what we in the west then knew as Bombay. I shall never forget my first sight of Bombay docks as my ship the TSS Chusan moved slowly in to dock in the harbour. Myself and a friend who shared a cabin with me. We leaned excitedly over the rails in the forward part of the ship's open deck. For a moment we strained our eyes to see all the sacking, all the goods that were strewn around in clumps on the dock front near to where our ship's hawsers would be thrown down, to be tied to bollards as the ship was nudged in by the tugs. But then the 'clumps' stirred, and they began to stretch and to stand up.
The morning sun had not fully risen and since we were still a few hundred yards from tying up we had not been able to discern the shapes, but now as Chusan moved in closer everything became clearer. These shapes were people, workers, now awaking and stretching and yawning. Some of them were probably employed in the docks and perhaps the others had simply found a place to sleep. It was my first experience of India and I did not stop to consider any moral aspect, any condition, any situation, of any of the people awaking there, alongside the mooring berth.
I was young and not experienced or informed enough to look at such things through the eyes of a philosopher. That changed eventually as I travelled more, learned more, studied more and of course grew older. Forgive me for posting such a lengthy comment here, but I am struck by the photos you post. They glow with humanity. They reach out with expression. They shine with good will and happiness, born of hope and expectation and, dare I say it, I perceive an innocence in each smile that beams from these pictures.
Such pictures take me back to so many good times and wonderful places and spiritually beautiful people whom I met in India, Ceylon, Penang & Singapore. Your weblog title is apt. It will encompass many things. India is a spiritual place and there are almost an infinite number of 'portraits' - both in reality and as a metaphor - to see and to experience, although it would take a lifetime.
I thank you for sharing you experience, it is very kind.
I was about 14 when I first got Real interest of India and Intact Special School. I was sitting in the auditorium, listening to Mr Thomas Ebenezer, at the time his english was very difficult to under stand but somehow he managed to affect me so much. With words and pictures he told us that they needed help. The goal was to build one school for less privileged and mentally retarded children. They had managed to buy land in a suburban area of Tiruchirappalli. There was a place of untouched ground, like a canvas ready to be painted.
For three years my entire school collected financial aid through working days. I saw the land in pictures before they had first built a watchman's house. As time passed by the school building was placed on the land, the hostel was built and the swimming pool for rehabilitation was installed. Trees grow, hens pick the ground and children play in the school yard. I feel honoured to have the opportunity to see such changes and be able to affect other peoples lives.
The staff at Intact Special School share such love and car for these children, it is amazing to see. Mr Thomas Ebenezer is the least selfish man I know, he is the director of Intact India. He refuses to accept his monthly salary instead he donates it to Intact India. And still he sometimes fells like he does not do enough.
But thanks to him 84 mentally retarded children has become a part of the society, they have learned to read and write. Hundreds of girls in Kalryan hills has received a chance for education through sponsorships.
This is the place where I feel most appreciated and needed. Portraying my picture, my point of view...
Thank you for your reply here and for explaining all these things to me.
I believe that every human being is endowed from the beginning with an internal node of faith and hope and trust, and in most people this kernel is retained and never lost.
Mr Thomas Ebenezer sounds like a very good man whose node has grown and imbues his humanity with profound goodness and charity of mind and heart.
In doing what you do here in your weblog you give substance to your inner need to show aspects of your life and the hope that lies in what you are doing outside.
I will continue to follow your progress here, from time to time and to read your reports and look at your photos, and I offer my best wishes for your spiritual success and for all that Mr Ebenezer does for the needy and the poor.
