Indonesia protests to US over leaked cable
Posted by admin in indonesia dated March 11th, 2011
Indonesia on Friday protested to the United States over a leaked US embassy cable revealed by an Australian newspaper alleging corruption and abuse of power by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The newspaper, The Age, on Friday published an article it said was sourced from WikiLeaks, saying that the US embassy in Jakarta had serious doubts about Yudhoyono’s integrity.
‘The government of Indonesia has conveyed its strong protest to the United States,’ Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said at a press conference.
‘The information contained in the report is entirely baseless and contains no truth whatsoever,’ he said.
The Age said in the article, citing the diplomatic cables allegedly published by WikiLeaks, that Yudhoyono personally intervened to influence prosecutors and judges to protect corrupt political figures and put pressure on his adversaries.
‘He reportedly also used the Indonesian intelligence service to spy on rivals and, on at least one occasion, a senior minister in his own government,’ the article said.
The Age also said the president’s wife, Kristiani Herawati, better known as Ani Yudhoyono, and relatives featured prominently in the US embassy’s political reporting.
It said US diplomats highlighted efforts of Yudhoyono’s family ‘to profit financially from its political position.’
Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said Yudhoyono was ‘shocked’ by the report.
‘The report is inaccurate and is not based on facts,’ he said.
US Ambassador to Indonesia Scot Marciel called the release of the information ‘irresponsible.’

WikiLeaks cables confirm US knowledge of Indonesian military’s crimes
By Oliver Campbell
10 January 2011

Leaked cables from the US embassy in Jakarta demonstrate that even as Washington was pursuing closer relations with the Indonesian armed forces (TNI), the American government was well aware of the TNI’s ongoing human rights abuses in Papua.
The cables provide only a glimpse of the TNI’s long record in Papua of repression against the indigenous Melanesian population and criminal activities including protection rackets, drug running and illegal logging. Nevertheless, they expose Washington’s claims that the Indonesian military was mending its ways.
Spanning 2006 to 2009, excerpts from the cables published in the Age in December revealed:
