InternetNightmare's ideas

OpenSuSE 11: A Brief Review

, , , ...

Few days ago I installed OpenSuSE 11. There were three reasons for it:
1) My friend recommended trying it
2) It was released on my birthday
3) It had KDE4

It was out and I rushed to the faculty (they have good internet there) to download OpenSuSE 11 DVD (yes, biggy). It contained GNOME, KDE3 and KDE4 desktops and ofcourse being a modern man I chose KDE4 without much of thought.

KDE 4

I'm a big fan of KDE, but KDE 4.0 disappointed me. Looks were kinda good, but that's about it. Everytime I logged in to my desktop I got KNotify4 crash reported and KNetworkManager (though it used one from KDE3, I believe) was crashing as well (or more like: didn't start). Also it lacked one of my favourite features: the file server applet (it was something my friend Rick missed too). It misses some other small things as well.
So I decided KDE4 is not ready for my desktop and there I was looking at the screen suggesting one of these: GNOME, KDE3, KDE4. This time I chose KDE3.

P.S. I heard that KDE 4.1 is more stable and usable.

KDE 3

KDE 3.5 desktop was wonderfull as always. OpenSuSE has a nice (heard other oppinions as well) modification to the KMenu, whick makes it look more like the one found in KDE4.

It came with standard KNetworkManager, which I like a bit less than the one that comes with KUbuntu, but it has all the needed features.

Drivers

I installed OpenSuSE on my laptop and devices like memory card reader, soundcard (I will talk a bit about it later), network card, BlueTooth worked out of the box.
Video: OpenSuSE allows adding special repository that has packages for ATI video drivers.
Wireless: I have an Atheros chipset, so I added madwifi repository and all worked fine.
Conclusion. It would have been nice, if adding repositories and installing drivers had bin done for me. (For example in Ubuntu you get notified about restricted (proprietary) driver use, but they get installed).
Things like screen brightness adjustment and ACPI worked well too.
Now Touchpad was another problem as horizontal scroll area occupied bottom 50% of the touchpad and I had to manually edit Xorg.conf to fix this.

Drivers: Sound

Well sound is a Linux problem. It seams that ALSA doesn't love Realtek HD audio and doesn't allow muting internal laptop speakers, so I use OSS (Open Sound System) instead.

Packages

It's called YaST. It works good.
OpenSuSE's wiki has links to lots of repositories, so you won't need to compile much. Also it comes with zypper console utility (similar to apt-get or yum).
Updating is very fast as OpenSuSE uses xdelta packages, which contain only the differences between new and old package versions.
One disappointing thing is that YaST can not resume package downloads. If your PC crashes during package download, next time you have to start it all over. But this is not a problem for broadband owners.

Overall impression

It's nice and fast. After all the configurations are done, it works really well. YaST2 makes configuring system settings easy. So if you're planning to switch to another Linux distribution, OpenSuSE is really worth a try.

Easter and software

, , ,

So the eggy days is tomorrow. And as always, I update my blog when the Holidays are near and only write about them...

Easter is the time of hope, time to celebrate the birth of new. So I think, it's the right time to post my Linux software whish list

  • I whish someone actually makes music production software similar to FruityLoops, with lots of nice instruments and effects.
  • I whish GIMP gets layer effects like PhotoShop has (I saw some scripts that try to replicate that functionality, but they aren't that nice...)
  • I whish ALSA fixes problems with laptop HD audio soundcards (problems with muting internal speakers)
  • I whish native Flash build for x86_64 comes out
  • I whish someone develops an application similar to Adobe ImageReady and Macromedia Fireworks for slicing images (and those other nice features).
  • I whish...

And the Linux world becomes a better place for me to live.

So the Christmas have passed

, ,

So the Christmas have passed, got some presents... But one thing I'm lacking is that nice and warm Christmas feeling I used to get. For reasons unknown my "Christmas feel" is gone. But since Chrstmas is over it's not a prob anymore.

I just hope I'll have a nice New Year (which I suspect I won't).

Anyway, I whined about lack of Christmas feeling, so this blogpost can be prety much over.

Time to get back into self-deadening activities like movies, PC games, etc.

It's bin a a while...

It's bin a while since I last posted to the blog.
Was kinda busy with university stuff and some other things.

So here I am, sitting in fron of PC and my rooms window. Sky's grey, so is my mood...
Thinking what should I write to the blog and as always, when you feel the need to write - you can't. Everything needs the right time, the time when you feel like it.

Oh well... Another blog post here.

Exams and sun

, , ,

It's so nice here in Lithuania. Sun is shining, it's at least 27C every day. I'm soon to melt... And I have to take exams, which is some sort of fun too. Especially when sun is shining and you go to exam all happy and everything.

So what's all the blurb about? Well... Actually nothing. I jsut really wanted to write something.

P.S. I wonder why http://blogsearch.google.com/ didn't pick my blog?

MSN Messenger blocks .scr

, , , ...

I just discovered that MSN Messenger blocks any messeges that contains ".scr". That is an extension fror screensaver applications for windows. The reason for this is most likely to block virus spreading as screensavers. Because latly it became quite a trouble, becouse users tend to open any links they get. ".exe" is bad, everyone knows that, but .scr looks safe. But what if you wanted to paste a link to www.scribd.com?

Depression go away!

, , , ...

You are wondering what to do, but anythin' that you think of is not what you want? You want to go somewere, but you don't know where? You feel upset? Well you must have a depression.

How to get rid of it?

Well first, try finding reasons why are you upset. If something is bad, if it's something related to your work, love or something that you done and regret. Try thinking about the situation, try convincing yourself it's all OK. And most of the time it is.

Secondly, think of something you would really want to do. Somthing new or something you always wanted to do. Go sky diving or something like that.

And last, if it doesn't help... Well then go and visit doctor.

There a millions of people that wake up having bad mood everyday, they feel depressed. They have no interest in life, they feel alone. Spending time with good friends and people you love, getting involved in some interesting activities on your free time, enjoying every moment of life and making life of others more enjoyable makes your life better.

So don't be upset, go explore the beautiful world around! It's all OK

The joyful spring!

, , ,

So the spring came... Despite of spring depression that some of us get, it's a nice and joyfull time of the year. Lots of sun, which makes us happier and more energetic. The snow begins to melt (for those that live in places that actually have snow in winter). All those nice little "rivers"...

And all those wonders that life isn't goin' as we would like it to. Well I think spring is the time to make our lives flow to the right direction! Time for changes and sun guarantees we have enough energy for that. So put bad thoughts away and start thinking what can you do to make your life a more enjoyfull experiance and when doing that don't forget about friends! Helping each other is a wonderful way to make our lives more enjoyable. More enjoyable for everyone...
