Mono, Ubuntu
It seems that Mono project doesn't like Ubuntu too much.

gmail, down, google
Wow, a realiable mail service seems to be down and quite for some time now. Google's blog doesn't have anything about it. Other services such as groups and search seem to be working just fine. Lets hope GMail problem is fixed soon.
And I wonder... Do emails still arrive? And maybe it's posible to get mail using POP. Too bad I haven't set it up.

linux, OpenSuSE
Today I looked into statistics for my page and noticed, that quite a few come from Google search for fixing CD or DVD automount on OpenSuSE, so I'm posting this link that has this and few other workarounds to make your OpenSuSE experience more enjoyable.

AMD, computing, ISP, buisiness
...
So here I was reading about the cloud computing hype and Microsoft making its
Live Mesh and AMD building a
supercomputer composed of 1000 GPUs and so on. This is becoming a growing trend and in fact this is very convenient to just lend the power you need or have central storage for all your data.
And then the thought bumped into my head... This is a perfect buisiness opportunity for ISPs, wouldn't it be nice to just get some storage and/or computing power from our ISP? Low latency connection and it's already the company you are a customer of. Convenient? I think so.
Combine that with wide internet coverage (3G networks make miracles these days), cheap, low power consumption netbooks with batteries with 8 hour operation and you get... I knew you would understand me.

dog, story, childhood, killed
...
This is a story that I remembered from my childhood. It happened when I was in a second or maybe third grade.
At the time it was popular to keep pets... Electronic. The trend came from Japan I believe. And since most of my friends had one, so I wanted one too and happily the Christmas morning I found one under the Christmas Tree. It was a dog. Unlike most of my friends killing their pets every few weeks, I was persistent and loyal to my new e-friend. I would take it with me, feed, take for a ride and do everything I had to do, so it stays alive and is happy. I even instructed my mom how to take care of my friend in case I couldn't. I wanted to see what happens when I reach 99 as my logic was saying it is the limit. Well maybe I win the game or something. But there was one thing that always bothered me, instruction said "Do not take the dog for a ride after 20:00.", but it didn't say a word about what happens when you do. Curiosity was torturing me, every day more and more. And so one day, when my dog was of age 86 I did...
The moral of story is: sometimes it's better not to know. I was very said to find out what happens, very... So much effort was destroyed.
The second moral: care only about what helps you on reaching the first and main goal.
I cried...

SuSE, OpenSuSE, kde4, review
Doesn't boot.
When installing OpenSuSE I thought I'll write a blog entry about it and start it with "Works!", but... So I rebooted my Asus F3Ka laptop and sadly OpenSuSE didn't boot. That was fixed by booting in failsafe and then rebooting. Why? No idea...
As always I used KDE, KDE4 (4.1.3) this time. It's already a usable desktop, but still lacks quite some features from KDE3. For example, how do you make 2 lined window list in a taskbar? But the biggest shock I had was when I tried to burn a CD for my friend. KDE didn't detect new CD, K3b didn't detect it. This also happened to the music CD. Automounting doesn't works. At the moment of writing openSuSE forums don't have direct questions about the problem.
But besides those problems everything works fine and looks good.
Update: CD-ROM started working after reboot. Probably some KDE4 buggy.

update, updates, SuSE, OpenSuSE
...
It's not another "I hate Windows" post, not even "Microsoft is bad" one. I do like Microsoft and admire most of its products, but there are some places where Windows is just lagging behind the open source sollutions.
One example of that is updates. Windows get quite a few updates and they often take a long time to install. What I like about openSuSE is delta packages. Those are packages that only contain the difference between existing and new package, so downloading them is very fast. But not only downloading... Installing two today didn't even take a minute including the time required for download.
And now I wonder... Why applying updates on Windows takes much more time, though they just seem to be little fixes over one issue?..

improving, user, menu, application
...
First I would like to congratulate My Opera on nice work on redesigning their portal. It's a nice change.
Second, I would like to talk about the feature which I sometimes miss in applications, though it's pretty easy to implement. It's what I would call an action search. All applications have huge menus with lots of actions which aren't always that easy to find. Wouldn't it be a great idea if you could click some combination or a function key like F8 and it would bring you to the search bar. For example:
I often remember how the actions are called, but it's sometimes hard to find in which menu/submenu it is located. Now if you know where your action is lcoated it's probably faster to use mouse to navigate to it, but when you don't, it can be a quite handy feature.
Anyway, those are my 5 cents on improving User Interfaces in applications.
Thank you for reading and have a nice day!
