In Drag Me To Hell, Sam Raimi's return to lowish-budget horror after the astronomical expense of the Spider-Man sequels, Alison Lohman plays Christine, a well-intentioned and formerly rather plump girl who's downsized herself to become the presentable face of American profligacy: loans officer for a California bank.
Keen to secure a promotion, she rejects the pleas of an old woman her employers are set to foreclose on, only to be confronted by her client again later that night. Tearing a button from Christine's coat, the woman intones an ancient gypsy curse, cackling: "Soon it will be you begging me."
Shamelessly resurrecting ancient horror standbys - not just curses; seers and séances, too - Raimi clearly enjoys being allowed to return to the unruly instincts of his Evil Dead trilogy: half the picture is spent sullying Lohman's soft, appealing features with phlegm, maggots or embalming fluid.
Yet its most memorable sequences - a parking-lot smackdown; Christine's first visit to a fortune teller - remind you just how meticulously storyboarded the director's best work is, a discipline easily forsaken between the process shots and marketing confabs of larger-scale productions.
Drag Me To Hell might have become a self-serving exercise - Raimi's attempt to get by on nickels and dimes, having burned through innumerable dollar bills - but it's too savvy and witty for that. As a parable of the unwise decisions money tempts us into, it's as pertinent to certain dealers and leaders as it might be to a director coming off the back of an increasingly fraught series of superhero movies. (The final twist, certainly, underlines the importance of keeping a close eye on the pennies.)
For the rest of us, there's a talking goat, a tremendous catfight in an open grave, and the best attacking-an-old-crone-with-a-stapler sequence we'll see all year.
