When your partner asks you if you want to move in together, get married, buy a car together, adopt a child, meet the parents, take a vacation together, attend a relationship seminar, and so on, don't say yes.
In a relationship this will tend to push you into the next stage (commit to leaving), which is the whole point.
If you're in a relationship and you notice your partner has stopped saying yes, it's a sign the other person wants to quit the relationship but doesn't feel strong enough to quit yet. If you ask for deeper intimacy and don't get a yes, it's time to have a long talk about the future of your relationship.
If you truly have a family that you love and that loves you, isn't it fair to ask them to give you the support you need to shift to a career you love? Does your family really want you to suffer? What kind of support is that?
Have you told your family the truth about your situation? Do they know how hard it is for you? Did you ask them for help? Did you ask for what you want?
Erin and I have often supported each other when one of us needed to go through a change, especially one that caused our income to drop. We know the growth we each experience is more important than our lifestyle.
I'd gladly explain to my kids that we need to cut back on expenses if that became necessary for Erin or me to switch careers. I'd want them to learn that happiness is more important than material comforts. I think both of them would rather have a happy father than a wealthy and unhappy one, even if it meant we couldn't live as nice a lifestyle.
If your own family won't support you through the changes you need to go through, then you don't have a family at all. You merely have a living arrangement with familiar cohabitants.
What kind of father/husband would you want if you were in their shoes?
